Which airbrush?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at possibly getting a patriot 105 if/when I get an airbrush, what kind of compressor would you recommend for it? (they are unfortunately considerably more expensive here in the UK, I guess because they have to be brought over from Illinois)

i use a renegade krome from badger.. but if you're starting out id suggest getting a "kit" ie a package of a dual action brush and a little compressor just to see if you like airbrushing in the 1st place.

I already have a nice little compressor from a package deal you're talking about from eBay ages ago but the air brush it self packed up and I tried everything to get it going again, so I'm really looking at only the brush/gun it self.

I've also been drawn to Aztek airbrushes as the reviews on them are just that bit better against badger.

its all personal preference really, go with your gut & what is easiest to source parts for near you.

how is the airbrush packed up? does it not spray, does the paint bubble in the cup, is it pissing air out of somewhere it shouldnt?

Basically the air was going through but the paint wasn't, even when it fully pulled back, so I cleaned it all up, left it to soak in white spirit...thoroughly cleaned it (8tines to be precise) and it still did not work, so took it apart and cleaned up again and still no paint, then pain came through but at such a poor rate and splattered on, I was at the same PSI as always.

I've opted to buy an aztek airbrush

I agree, this sounds like a blocked nozzle. Most likely you haven't been cleaning it properly. If you don't get in the habit of doing so, you will bork your new AB too.

White spirit will not cut it. You need a proper AB cleaner or cellulose thinners. Get some cleaning brushes, including some long bristle fine paintbrushes to clean out the nozzle, and get in the habit of fully stripping the AB down at the end of a session and cleaning it properly BEFORE it dries solid. An ultrasonic cleaner also helps a great deal in cleaning up the innards of the brush (after using thinners etc to loosen stuff up); I run mine in it when swapping from metallics to non-metallics, and at the end of a session.

I agree with both of the above, when I have these symptoms during a session it is usually the nozzle. In addition to the airbrush cleaning brushes I also keep handy an old segment of guitar string where I removed the outer coiling, the diameter of the wire is perfect to fit through the nozzle and sometimes I can push out a very small plug of dried paint that would otherwise be impossible for me to get. Just be wary that you dont insert something through the nozzle that is too wide and force it through, thus widening the hole, this wire slides right through without resistance.
