psiekier
I recently sold off my Third Company, Second Squad unit of Blood Angels, keeping around only a few extras that could fit into a new squad. Over the years I had become disappointed by the old paint job, and I wanted a little more variety than just the Mk VII metals from Second Edition and the Mk VII plastics from Third Edition. I decided to start by making a new version of Brother-Sergeant Vincent, and by pure serendipity I happen to have a box of the Fifth Edition Blood Angels Death Company, a high-collared Third Edition Sergeant torso, and a stack of neodymium magnets of various diameters all in the same place at the same time. Never again will I have to paint up multiple versions of the same model just to switch out weapon choices (although sometimes that in itself can provide some nice variety). No, instead, I'm going to make one Vincent figure and enough arms so that he not only gets his choice, but can share them with Brother-Sergeant Adorno of the Eighth Squad. http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_shoota_and_fist_s.jpg Phobos-Pattern Bolter and Death Company power fist http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_slugga_and_choppa_s.jpg Death Company Bolt Pistol and modified Space Wolf Power Axe http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_burna_and_sword_s.jpg Death Company Hand Flamer and Third Edition Honour Guard Power Sword (metal) http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_plasma_pistol_and_fist_s.jpg Death Company Plasma Pistol and Second Edition Power Fist with metal pauldron bearing chapter insignia http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_plasma_pistol_and_fist02_s.jpg Death Company Plasma Pistol and Second Edition Power Fist (other side) Ironically, despite the title of this thread, Vincent actually only has the one "face". Maybe I'll paint up a nice-looking helmet to swap out with sometimes... his head is magnetized, too! The_Chaplain
Wow, i actually like the old powerfist model. It's got some real character to it. That said, nice model overall- it's a good combination of bits all around. Lachdannan
Been awhile since I've seen that old power glove. Nice loadout's, and I'm sure you have fun painting. lhg033
as has been saif - nice to see the old power fist next time i get to my parents i plan on raiding my 2nd edition bits box thats in the loft to see if i have any of these. plamsa pistol/fist (2nd from last) pose reminds me of the stance of the 2nd edition tactical sergent despite the weapons being different. shoulder pad on the bolter pistol arm looks a bit off though could be the camera angle. other than that, nice choice of weapon options Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257245-the-many-faces-of-brother-sergeant-vincent/#findComment-3130577 Share on other sites
Urauloth
Always nice to see someone else doing this! It's satisfying, isn't it? What did you end up using in the way of magnets? psiekier
shoulder pad on the bolter pistol arm looks a bit off though could be the camera angle. other than that, nice choice of weapon options No, it is off a little, but I'd actually intended it to go on my assault squad sergeant and things fit a little strange with the jump pack in the way. Since I made all the poles on the magnets compatible, though, and both models are Blood Angels sergeants (and thus bear the same livery on matched shoulder pauldrons), I can swap arms between the two of them to arm them as I please. What did you end up using in the way of magnets? The backpack, head, and neck socket have matching 1/16" x 1/32" round magnets so I can take off the bosspole for easy storage and swivel the head around to menace whichever enemy unit comes closest. Both shoulders and all of the arms except for the bolter are fitted with 1/8" x 1/16" round magnets, and the poles match my assault squad sergeant so they can swap weapons. The bolter arm was a little harder to do and I fitted it with the smaller 1/16" x 1/32" round magnet like the head. I have a left-handed plasma pistol and infernus pistol (not pictured) ready to paint up as well. psiekier
So much to do! I think it was Adrian Wood who suggested the importance of clearing your workspace... that staring down that many models yet to be finished may be so daunting that some days it just makes you want to throw in the towel. At the same time, I reason, if I've got the pot of Blood Red open, shouldn't I paint more than just one model with it? How about I paint all the red parts on several models while I'm at it? This leads to longer times to get even one model done, but also frequently results in my having several models done simultaneously. http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/squad_vincent_WIP_medium.jpg So here is Vincent, surrounded by what will someday become his Third Company, Second Squad mates, plus an extra tactical marine for First Squad to fill a gap in my lineup. I'm having a devil of a time with lining-in, but hope to be able to clean up a bunch of that stuff when I go back and do the highlights on the red parts of the armour. http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/squad_vincent_WIP_closeup_medium.jpg After looking at lots of other Blood Angel pictures both on line and in the various GW publications at my disposal, I've settled on green as a good colour for purity seals as long as the armour is red. It makes for a nice contrast without taking away too much from the rest of the detail, I think. psiekier
The database crash ate my last post. After a year on hiatus, I got back to painting. Surely I'll have the Third Company's second squad painted up before the kids go back to school. http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_front_medium.jpg http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_left_side_bolt_gun_medium.jpg http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincent_right_side_power_fist_medium.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257245-the-many-faces-of-brother-sergeant-vincent/#findComment-3412752 Share on other sites
psiekier
Getting there! http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/squad_vincent_WIP_SEP13_medium.jpg It takes longer this way, but when I'm done, instead of one model, I have a whole squad! psiekier
Good job on the face and on the free hand squad icon on the knee. Thanks, deathspectersgt7. I want to get the livery correct in as many places as possible - not simply because it looks good, but also because without it, a bunch of red guys on the tabletop can all start to look alike after a turn or two. I meant to get back to this last night, but didn't. Maybe I'll have time to get more done this weekend. Here is the entire squad, with the unfinished half standing in front. http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/squad_vincent_WIP_SEP13_all11_medium.jpg I want to do more with those extra arms, and had originally intended them to be swappable with my assault squad sergeant, but I found out after another close look at my codex that Brother-Sergeant Vincent can't actually get some of the arms I've put together for him, such as the hand flamer and infernus pistol! psiekier
So, I heard about GW's "Armies on Parade". I don't think there's a Genestealer's chance on Ultramar that I'd actually be able to go to Games Day, but in discussing it with the manager at the local GW, I think I have a fair shot of coming out on top there, at least ... provided I actually buckle down and paint something. http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/vincents_progress_medium.jpg [ Click to Enlarge ] This has inspired me to get my lazy act together and finish Brother-Sergeant Vincent and his squad. I need to add highlights to some of the guns, apply some waterslide transfers, and finish off the bases. After that, I've got another tactical squad to finish, and they'll need a captain to lead them... Brother Pheidias
Please, please, PLEASE don't go the green-and-flock route with the bases! Your painting on the models deserves something more! psiekier
Please, please, PLEASE don't go the green-and-flock route with the bases! Your painting on the models deserves something more!Oh no! http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/blood_angels/squad_vincent_medium01.jpg [ Click to Enlarge ] Y'know, I have an unopened bag of Citadel static grass here. I considered using it on Squad Vincent, but I have never even done a test model with it. While it is not too late to redo the bases for Squad Vincent, they need to fit in with the rest of my squads so I can enter Armies on Parade... and all of them - at least all the finished ones - already have the flocked bases. http://www.peteandkellie.com/wh40k/images/WIP/army_on_parade_WIP01_medium.jpg [ Click to Enlarge ] It's funny... I've joked that my Blood Angels deign only to battle on perfectly manicured golf courses - hence my continued use of green flock. I wonder if I shouldn't make my 2x2 display board for Armies on Parade into a ... perfectly manicured golf course!
