Grey Knights 7th Brotherhood - the Knight Owls

Recommended Posts

Hail Brothers, its been a long while since I've painted anything PA related (I think my Iron Snakes were the last ones) but I'm glad to be working on some of the Emperor's chosen again to post these on the BnC. This is a test mini for my new Grey Knight army repaint (yes, I have an old Daemonhunters force from back in the day, I earned the right to use the new book :)). I'm basing the minis, background and characters on the members of my local GCN club, the Leeds Night Owls. So was boarn the Knight Owls.

This is just a test piece so I've not bothered with the proper photo set up (or real camera, this is just my phone) but I'd appreciate any feedback before I start plugging away with the rest of them!

Thanks guys,

This won't be used as a brotherhood champion though (I don't even think he's fancy enough to be used as a justicar!) he'll just be a regular knight. I've got a conversion in the works for a brotherhood champ using Hellbrecht as the base (which has the added bonus of looking suspiciously like the club member I'm naming the champ for!).

Working on rest of Squad Corteswain this week in preparation for a huge narrative campaign starting at the club in August so I hope to have some more (and larger) photos soon.

Cheers

Dan

They look great! I'm still on the bench about starting a small GK force. I really love the new models and my metals were donated some time ago to other battlebrother forces.

Is it still too soon to purchase new plastics/finecasts and not be considered a bandwagon participant? ;)

Those blades are so well painted. I really do hope that you do them by hand, because this trend of doing everything with an airbrush is getting on my nerves...

Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more

thanks, they are indeed done the old fashioned way by hand. The closest I come to using an airbrush on anything is basecoating with army painter plate mail!

Thanks

Hopefully, I'm off work until Wednesday in quarantine so hoping to have something to show for it! I'm mid way through the next three strike squad members including the converted justicar

Great to see you around again, corai. I was a big fan of your Iron Snakes.

These guys look the business, especially the blades as Ludo pointed out. I like the change to blue and yellow for the personal heraldry. It definitely helps in differentiating them from other Grey Knight forces. Will definitely be watching and I'm looking forward to the Justicar. :tu:

finsihed off Squad Corteswain and their Justicar, Sir Malchaos the Scarlet Hand of Titan. This represents the first completed squad for the army (and first completed 40K squad since 4th ed)

Wow!

Well done mate, very well done.

I love the check pattern everywhere.

Thanks. I was going for a bit of an old school, rogue trader era grimdark kind of thing. But I fear what I've ccreated is a drive myself mad whilst trying to paint checkerboard patterns kind of thing!

Well, with a whole troops choice built and painted I thought I'd best get them someone to boss them around, bumble about the battlefield, and turn up after the fighting has taken place to claim all the credit. Enter ][nquisitor Corai.

Unfortunately, the crappy lighting and camera phone have killed almost all of the blending and highlights on the mini. You get the general idea, but I'll be getting the lightbox and DSLR out after the weekend to get some better pics of what I've got painted so far.

Epic Warcaster Allister Caine from Warmachine range ?

wow, good job on the conversion, particularly the hood! Is the hood border sculpted or is it free hand?

You're spot on with hhe base of the conversion, it is warnachine's grammatin-cleric-cowboy-gun-Mage-ne'erdowell Alistair Caine

The hood (and head) are taken from the FW Solomon Lok mini then blended into the body with GS and procreate. (the lettering is sculpted on, but by FW, not me!). The shoulder pad is a cut down GK termi one, the plasma pistols are from FW's renegade guard and then I sprinkled on brass etc aquilas and plastic purity seals.

I'll try and upload the unpainted Wip pics this afternoon

Time for a big old update on this. I realise, despite putting this in the WIP section of the forum, I've only posted semi finished minis so far (finished painting, need better photos!), so I've uploaded a bunch of photos of some WIP conversions I've got on the go. A lot of the army is made from my reclaimed 4th ed Daemonhunters so not a lot to see until they are painted. I've converted a unit of paladins though, which I'll try and sort the photos for later. In the meantime, her's a bunch if WIPS:

Grand Master Stewart, Lord of the 7th Brotherhood

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/GM.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/GM2.jpg

Like every other GK player, I've built my GM from either Draigo or Hector Rex. The position of the head looks a little off in the photo, but looks rightin real life. I think I'll sculpt a gorget back in though to make him fit with the rest of the GKT a little better

A pretty straight forward Brotherhood Champion conversion

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/BrotherhoodChamp.jpg

My Techmarines. As with most of the army, they are based off members of the Leeds Night Owls games club. Paul, the bearded inspiration for the servo harness chap is a giant of a man in real life, so I've adopted my truescale technique from another army to give him some extra bulk.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/Techmarine2.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/17-1.jpg

Any a heavily converted Nemesis Dreadknight. Whilst, unlike the majority, I actually quite like the Baby-harness look of the stock NDK, I like giant stompy robots even more, so kitbashed this with a librarian dreadnought to anthrapamophise it a little more. Surprisingly, the torso conversions were not nearly as difficult as reposing the two legs even slightly!

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/Dreadknight2.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/Dreadnknight1.jpg

And some reinforcements for my Inquisition:

Inquisitor Guildenstern. I really wanted to differentiate him from a GKT. Most Inqs in terminator armour I see are just repaitned plastic GKTs with a little extra bling (or Hector Rex). I wanted to make the armour look different to the Aegis suit worn by Grey Knight terminators so used different shoulder pads, and incorportated the back section of a normal suit of terminator armour. I also wanted it to be clear, it is a normal human in here, not a genetically engineered supersolider, so used a smaller head and the arms from a Grey Knight in Power Armour. I can buy a space marine firing a Psycnannon from a wrist mount, but I think a human being, no matter how snazzy his armour, should still need two hands to operate one!

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/Guildenstern.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/Guildenstern3.jpg

Inquisitor Corai's warband is made up from actual roleplaying characters over many years, so there's an eclectic bunch of people (who make for a fun, is apalling in the game, henchmen unit) in his unit. Left to Right Lochrane Kane (counts as acolyte with carapace armour, boltgun and plasma pistol), Interrogator Phalanx Traultz (counts as banisher with eviscorator), Four-Leaf (counts as acolyte with carapace armour and hot shot lasgun) and the abhuman engineer Algrim 'Grim' Oakenheart (counts as jokaero)

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b98/Corai/Guildenstern3.jpg

I've also been experimenting with some more generic acolyte henchmen who may be able to double as guardsmen if I built enough. Here's the first, armed with 'Triplex pattern' Stormbolter. Do you think the weapon is converted enough to count as a stormbolter? It has a bolt weapon muzzle and the double sickle magazine (from a stormbolter) but is much sleeker. I wanted a master crafted look that could still be fired two handed by a human being, rather than one handed by a marine.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Dan
