Captain Hwarang
Hey everybody, Although my Praetors of Orpheus are not quite yet done, I was anxious to begin working on this next project. I'm aiming to make the entire remnants of the Celestial Lions chapter. Check out their entry at Lexicanum. Basically, they were decimated during the 3rd war for Armageddon, and there are only 96 left. It's a very school story actually. Anyway, I've decided to equip them with melta guns, multimeltas, and melta bombs wherever possible, because it seems like these would be the weapons with which they would be trying to destory the Gargant mobs mentioned in the article. I have used a couple of ork bits on the shoulder pads, imagining that they would be forced to repair their armor with whatever they could find on the battlefields of Hive Volcanus, much the same way that the Space Wolf 13th Legion has been forced to repair their armor with Chaos equipment. With that in mind, would one of the Emperor's finest resort to using Ork weaponry if he had no other option? I'm thinking of using some Ork close combat weapons, and possibly shootas, for some conversions. What do y'all think of this? Big no no? Anyway, on to the pics. The fancy shoulder pad is from Scibor. http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLion01WIP.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLion02WIP.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLion03WIP.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLion04WIP.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLion05WIP.jpg Also, a missile launcher conversion of which I'm particularly proud: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/MissileLauncherConversion01.jpg I'm partial to the melta guy and the guy with the lion mask. What do y'all think? C&C is very much invited. Thanks. -CH Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257321-true-scale-celestial-lions/ Share on other sites
Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Liking the true scaling man. But that missile launcher is brilliant. I'm currently building a Missile Launcher Dev squad, and I will be copying this idea :) Looking forward to seeing more. I'm thinking of using some Ork close combat weapons, and possibly shootas, for some conversions. What do y'all think of this? Big no no? Hey dude, those are some nice looking models. I just thought that I'd chime in regarding the Ork weaponry. The question is almost not whether than would but if they can. A lot of Ork tek works off their innate psychic presence and basically works because they believe it does. In the Ork Codex there's a quote by an Adeptus about how a lot of captured tek just ceases to work when not wielded by an Ork. I've always felt that while this extends most heavily to the real crazy tek of the Meks, that it also enhances everything down to the effectiveness of the shootas. Otherwise a crazed Ork Mek is equaling the work of the best Tech Adepts the Imperium has to offer. That's not an impediment though, just a good thing to hang the background off. Maybe they've got a techmarine going slightly crazy having to repair all this Ork equipment and trying to figure out how it even worked in the first place. GooseDaMoose
Yeah I remember reading that as well about Ork technology. I actually really like the idea that they have no idea what they're doing, but they were told it was gonna work so it does. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic," right? ;) Choppas they could use though, if they wanted, but aren't those generally only as effective as they are because of the enormous strength of your average Ork boy? I don't think a Space Marine would debase himself by using a sword which really only functions as a slightly sharper than average club. Feste
I actually really like the idea that they have no idea what they're doing, but they were told it was gonna work so it does. Worse than that, no-one told them how to do it. It's literally in their blood. 'I gots me a feeling that this sproket should fit in that valve'. Choppas, yeah those probably aren't all that complicated, and yeah I can't see even the most desperate marine using one. A rock would probably be better and more honourable. Captain Hwarang
Yeah, I've read that about Ork tech too. I'm actually an Ork player at heart (first army was Bad Moons), and I feel like a traitor adding ork skulls and heads to these guys' belts, or adding discarded ork scrap to the bases. Sorry orks! I can think of two times when Imperial soldiers have used ork tech: Ragnar uses an ork buggy in William King's Space Wolf (actually I think it was the second book in the omnibus), and there was a unit back in an old chapter approved annual (2004 I think) called the Armageddon Ork Hunters or something. They were guard soldiers that used choppas and shootas, painted their skin green, and generally acted like orks. Their ballistic skill was reduced to 2 because of using a shoota. Anybody remember them? Any other thoughts on the weapons? Any problems with patching up armour with ork scrap metal? Thanks for your input guys, it's helping me keep things in perspective as I build the army. Couple more pics (I'm in obvious need of green stuff tips if you haven't noticed!): http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/GreenStufflegs.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257321-true-scale-celestial-lions/#findComment-3131937 Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
Nice looking True Scale marines you've got there. As to GS tips, use clay shapers, they help massively. B&Cs Lamenter has his own website www.masteroftheforge.com and he has all the info you need, even a list of the size/shape shapers he uses and where to get them and how to use them. Cheers, Jono Thanks for the tips, Grotsmasha. Lamenter was actually one of the reasons I decided to even try this. His website is truly a great resource, as is Doghouse's tutorial. I got some "clay shapers" at Michaels recently that are getting the job done, but I may end up ordering some from Heresy Miniatures as lamenter suggests sometime soon. Thanks again. Here are my test colors, with some WIP pics as well. I would love opinions regarding the blue especially, but anything is helpful., My main question with the blue is: is it too light? I tried getting a darker color first, as you'll see in the pics, and was unhappy with the blending, so I started over with a lighter color. Also, what do you think of the black backpack? Obviously, I'll pick out the silver bits with, well, silver, but I thought the contrast might help to darken the model overall. If not black, what about a blue darker than that of the helmet/shoulder pads? Onto the pics: Gold Test: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLIonTest01.jpg Base Colors: I painted the base gold with Rustoleum Sienna Mist (an orangey gold color), and the original blue is Vallejo Model Color Intense Blue with Vallejo Metallic Medium (1:1). http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/RustoleumSiennaMist.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionTrueScaleBase01.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLIonTrueScaleBase02.jpg Shading & Highlighting: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionTrueScaleStage201.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionTrueScaleStage203.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionTrueScaleStage204.jpg Final: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionTrueScaleTest01.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLioniTrueScaleTest02.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionTrueScaleTest02.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionTrueScaleTest05.jpg Scale Shot: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/CelestialLionScaleShot.jpg I realize the darker blue pictured here is pretty crappy, but it at least gives you an idea of what the model would look like with a darker color. Which do you think is better? Armond
I like the lighter color blue! Looks great! Making me want to start painting up my command squad. But I want to build 26 more marines; 2 tactical squads and 1 vanguard get squad! All I can say is keeP practicing with the clay shapers! Those things rock! Good work so far man! Captain Hwarang
Hey thanks man! Kind of funny that there are now two Celestial [big cats] projects going on at that the same time, huh? And they're both true scale! I promise, I didn't make these guys up though...they're really real. Any thoughts on the backpacks? -CH Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257321-true-scale-celestial-lions/#findComment-3135310 Share on other sites
Bane of Angels
That looks really, really nice. The gold looks great. As for Ork weapons, I do agree with the idea of how ork tech works but don't think that would stop them being able to use stuff like basic shootas and choppas to be honest. Captain Hwarang
Yeah I think the regular sized backpacks look fine without widening them too. I ordered 2 of the true scale kits from Chapter House Studios and thought people might like to see what's inside the kit, etc. Here are the pics: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouseTorsos.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouseTorsos2.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHOuseShoulderPads.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouseLegs3.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouseLegs2.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouseLegs1.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHousebackpacks.jpg Scale Shot: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouselegsscaleshot.jpg First impressions are generally positive. You can tell there will be a lot of cleaning up to do. Some of the legs seem to be in awkward poses and perhaps too skinny. There is not much detail on the pieces, but that could be on purpose to allow for more chapter-specific customization. Thoughts? -CH Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257321-true-scale-celestial-lions/#findComment-3136889 Share on other sites
Captain Hwarang
Okay everybody, I finally built a guy using the chapter house kit, and I must say that it's much better than it seemed out of the box. It fit together really well, the GW arms and heads attached easily without needing pinning, and most importantly, the legs no longer looked long, skinny, or awkwardly posed, once the model was put together. A bonus is that it's exactly the right size to match a terminator-based true scale conversion. It will need some bits added to make it more detailed, but overall I am very pleased with this kit. I would recommend it for those of you working on true scale projects that want an alternative to GSing dozens of terminator legs. Oh yeah, it also came with four extra shoulder pads, which is great since tracking down blank terminator pads can be a bit tough. Here are the pics: http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouseMarineComplete.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac110/jcttkd/ChapterHouseMarineScaleShot.jpg What do y'all think? Calgar 2.0
I'm sorry, but the Chapterhouse kit doesn't really look all too good. If anything, the legs are the highlight of the kit. No problem, to each his own. I'm thinking I can get it to look better than decent with a nice paintjob, but we'll see. In the meantime, I've finishedand primed the first Tac squad, plus the missile launcher guy that will be part of one of the 2 devastator squads. Grotsmasha
Niiiccceee!!! My only suggestion, and it's what I'm doing with my CH kits, is to remove CHs vents from their powerpacks and add GWs ball ones, it just fits the SM image better imo. Blckbuster
Bravo great work as always, I must voice my opinion against traditional loyalists using xenotech, and most meaningfully, with all their apothecaries dead the Only thing they can recover from their battlebrothers is their wargear I always imagined in my daydreams of 40k was that there was a chapter master on that planet at that time with a grudge against the high lords, priests to get the visions that would inform them and priests that might even be able to help with the geneseed Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257321-true-scale-celestial-lions/#findComment-3146127 Share on other sites
