Allies Question

Ok so I just got the 6th ed book and have been reading the rules for allies in. It shows that you must take 1 HQ for the Allies. I am not sure ho this works for Space Wolves and wanted another take on it.

does it...

1) Space Wolves get 2 for one HQ slots this allows you to use 1 of the 4 slots as an allied commander

2) Space wolves get 2 for one slot and thus using one for allies only leaves 2 slots for Wolf HQ's

3) (This was a friends take and I think it is total BS) You get 2 for one slots so when you move one to an Allie you get 2 Allied HQ's (I think he is high)

If you post an answer please post your reason behind it along with any book reference and page number to support your thoughts. Last thing I want is a "I think this" post with no reason behind it...

I think it is number 2 myself from reading the WOlf Codex says (I don't have it with me so can't post a page) For each HQ slot you have you may take two picks. Thus if one slot is used for an Allie it leaves you a single slot (2 picks) for your army...

allies have a completely separate FOC you have pretty much the same old FOC for your main detachment and a separate new ally FOC for your allied detachment.

the ally FOC gives you 1 Hq and 1 Troop that you have to take and 1 troop, 1 elite, 1 fast and 1 heavy optional.

space wolves may take 2 hqs for each hq slot in your FOC so if wolves are your allies they use the ally FOC which has 1 hq slot and hence they can take 2 hq's. if they are your main force then they use the regular FOC which allows two hq slots and so wolves get 4 hqs.

allies do not "use up" any of your main detachment's FOC

Just to make sure I understand,

A space Wolf list could take 5 HQ's (4 Wolves and 1 other) and 8 Troops (6 wolves and 2 other) etc.

Is there a page number I can confirm this on, because the way you put it, I can see no down side to taking allies. A army should always have an ally of some kind just for the extra slots...

If one is playing a game over 2000 points then one can take two normal foc and two allied foc

Allies can be useful. There is no massive negative to them although they are surprisingly difficult to make be brilliant.

I'm out at the moment and don't have the book on me but go look at the page with the FOC diagram on it. Look it up in the index.

well i think 2,000 points is a bit of a small game to being allowed to fill out a 2nd FOC but that is just me i think they should have done it at about 4,000 +.

By making it smaller, GW has made it to where you need less models/points to convince you to buy more and/or alternate boxes from them to field your Allied army, and potentially grow a stronger affinity with them and build them up into a stand-alone army in their own right, which in turn will beg for even more Allied forces to go with the 2nd army, and so on, etc... deviously vicious cycle.
