1st 6th Ed game 1000 pts Imperial Fists vs Necrons

Recommended Posts

So, first off thanks for reading this. Secondly, stick with it even if reading this makes you want to hurl when you see how it went down.

I had known I was facing the necrons for my 6th ed training mission so I knew better than to take vehicles. I decided on a librarian (bp, force staff, pa, epistolary), a 10 man sternguard squad (2xLC, MB sarge, 2x combimelta, 1 combiplasma, HB, HF), 10 man tac squad (BP, CCW sarge, flamer, HB), another 10 man tac squad (PP, PF sarge, Plasmagun, HB), and a 6 man scout squad (Telion, 4 sniper rifles, ML, camo cloaks).

My esteemed opponent knew I was very new to 6th edition and didn't bring his toughest list but he still outnumbered my 37 models 2 to 1. He had a destroyer lord, two wraiths, a 10 man immortals squad, a 15 man warriors squad with an upgrade dude with a lance thingy, a 5 base arab squad, three destoyers, and an open topped skimmer thing with some nasty guns on it.

We decided on a basic dawn of war deployment, narrative terrain (mostly ruins on an ash waste board), and a simple kill points mission with the standard added victory points (first blood, slay the warlord, unit in the deployment zone)

I won the roll and decided to choose side and go first. I set up my tac squads on either side of my sternguard who was joined by the libby. My scouts infiltrated into a ruin with decent LOS to overwatch the pa marines. He set up the warriors directly across from me with the scarabs on their right. The immortals were flanked by the vehicle and the destroyer lord who had joined the wraiths. These were opposed by the scouts and on my left flank. His destoyer squad was in the middle of the board between his two main groups.

No night fight to start and he failed to steal initiative. My first turn. My libby was my warlord if you hadn't guessed. He rolled Dust of a Thousand Worlds for his trait and his psychic powers were both from the pyro line. He got power 4 and the primaris. The enemy was too far away for effective bolter fire so we moved up. Since we were still to far away, we ran. The scouts opened uponon the destoyer lord and wraiths. Telion put two hits on the lord and one scout did as well with precision shot. All failed to penetrate his armor.

His first turn. Scarabs move up, warriors move back. Destoyers move to my right. Destroyer lord and wraiths move into cover, no wounds. Immortals move toward telions squad. Vehicle moves towars telion as well. In his shooting phase, I get my first lessons on wound allocation and rapid fire. I knew that wounds were allocated to the closest model first but I hadn't known that it would take saves until it died or wounds were gone. My sternguard took two losses, the sarge and a bolter guy. The sarge failed two wounds from the destroyer squad and one was saved by LoS roll. Oops. The other tac squad on the sterguards right were shot by the warriors that moved. But how could that be? I wondered. Well apparently rapid fire weapons can still fire full range once even if they move and twice if the enemy is within half range. Huh. I don't think I would have ran with my squad if I could have shot with them. The necrons were within the range of the bolters max range. I could have picked off one or two. So, the tac squad takes a casualty. Telions squad got the raw end of the deal. Both the immortals and the vehicle open up on them and I lose 4 of my 6 to failed saves. Telions stays. His assault phase. He declares a charge against my sterguard with his scarabs. Overwatch kills one base and puts a wound on another. I love flamers for overwatch by the way. He rolls for distance and because I killed the closest one he is short.

My turn two. Sternguard moves up. Parts of left tac squad move up. Right tac sqaud moves up. Telions squad now only two men full stay where they are. Sternguard and libby fry the scarabs in preparation of assault. They are wiped out. First blood and a kill point. Right tac squad, now knowing they can shoot and move fire on the warriors. Two go down. The left tac squad kills a destroyer. Telion and his lone sniper fail to wound yet again. Since the sternguards target was destroyed, there is no assaults.

His turn two. Immortals and vehicle again move up to shoot up telions squad. Destoyer lord and wraiths jump out of cover and get ready to assault my left tac squad. Destoyers shift for a better firing angle. Warriors move up. Warriors rapid fire into my right tac squad. No casaualties. The destoyers kill one in the sternguard squad. Telion and squaddie go to ground in the ruin. Doesn't matter. They are both killed by the vehicle and immortals. KP necrons. The destoyer lord and wraiths declare against my left tac squad. They manage to kill a wraith and wound the other. They kill two in the insuing combat. They remain locked even though I tried to get away.

My turn three. Tac squad on the right moves up in anticipation of close combat with thw warriors. Sternguard and libby move left to support what is left of the failing tac squad. Pistols frag grenade and flamer kill two necron warriors before combat on my right. They charge in taking two casaulties from overwatch. Sarge declares challenge against upgrade dude. He first declines the challenge, but once I tell him he can't attack then because there is no other character in the unit, he accepts. I kill two more with my squaddies, they kill three. Sarge can't hit and niether can the other guy. We remain locked. The sternguard charge in. Libby declares challenge vs the destoyer lord. Sterns and tac squad can't wound the wraith. The libby is attacked by mind control scarabs and kills himself before he gets to attack the lord. The space marines loseanother two tac marines and both squads fail morale but thanks to ATSKNF they remain locked.

His turn three. Not much movement. He moves the destoyers into position to assault my right tac squad. No shooting as all my units are locked in combat. The right tac squad kills one but loses two more. The sarge is defeated in his challenge. The squad falls back. All two of them. The sterns and tac squad in combat with the destoyer lord lose the rest of the tac squad and another sterngurad. The sterns manage to get away, but there are only two left.

My turn four. We autorally. Shooting is in effecive. No assaults.

His turn four. No movement. Shooting kills off the tac squad and one sternguard. He passes leadership. He is assaulted by the lord and wraith and is killed. I'm tabled.

Final score: Imperial Fists 2 (first blood and 1 kill), Necrons 5 (four kills and the warlord)

What I learned: bolters are way better than before (move and shoot 24) snapfire on heavy bolters is awesome, flamers are awesome against assaults, wound allocation seems wierd but manageable if I place my models correctly.

I had a fun game even though I got wasted. Learning 6th ed was the point of this game and boy did I ever get the learning knocked into me. Better luck for me next time.

Good job! Ths guy sounded pretty aggressive, and your moving up allowed him to get into assault quicker, which was likely his goal. Always want to think about mission execution from a tactical standpoint...especially since you can move and shoot most weapons now. Librarians remain best used as a force mulitplier unless you know you have tooled him up for the assault.

Good luck in your next games!
