Extremely noob question re: GH weapons

Howdy, all.

I think its only right I come out and say I'm absolutely clueless to Space Wolves and the game of Warhammer in general. My mate got me into the hobby/game last week and I just bought a pack of Space Wolves with hobby tools to get me started.

Now in saying all that, I've done some research into the army and have a general idea of the models, what they do and what their purposes are. One thing I'm confused about is how I'm supposed to kit my models for my army.

Basically, I bought a Wolf Pack set with the intention to assemble a squad of Grey Hunters. What I'm unsure about is whether I'm supposed to kit my models with the two-handed boltguns or can I kit them with the pistols/sword combos? Or is this a Blood Claws-only build?

I'd appreciate some clarification and reassurance on the matter. I'm really keen to get started on the hobby but, stupid as it sounds, this is the only thing holding me back.

Cheers.

Firstly, welcome to the Fang, here at the B&C. You've made the right choice. Secondly, think long and hard on how you wish to represent your army. Do you want the jovial, ale-guzzling barbarian vikings persona, chosen by many Grey Beards here at the Fang, or do you rather envision a dark, brooding horde of death-makers that stalk their prey from the shadows as has become a more prevalent view... or a blending of the two or even somewhat different entirely.

Whatever the case, make your army your own and don't let someone tell you you're playing it wrong.

As to the question, Grey Hunters come equipped with a boltgun, bolt pistol, and a close combat weapon as standard. All three. As such, there's not really a wrong way to equip them, sans a powerfist or equally blatant power weapon of some sort unless purchased from the wargear options. However, "close combat weapon" is a loose term that can mean anything from a paperclip to a spear and all devices in between, so if you like axes for that more nordic feel, go nuts.

As for which is more appropriate, generally I'd say bolters. Most people prefer to save their bolt pistols and only use them for their Blood Claws, while reserving their bolters to use only with their Grey Hunters, to help distinguish the two packs on the tabletop. You do not have to squander your bolt pistols however. Another option could be painting GH pistols red and BC pistols yellow, etc. I personally chose to give all my GHs atleast one bolter and ccw (at times even a bolt pistol serving as ccw).

As far as WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) is concerned, any combination of the three is perfectly acceptable, even if all you gave them were close combat weapons, since their codex entry states they have the gear, therefore they do. End of discussion. After that, mold them to your own vision.

Have fun, and good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply, Wulfebane. Really appreciate you clearing that up.

As far as persona goes, I'm definitely attracted to the viking persona and is one of the main reasons why I chose to start with them. Let's say I can relate to the grog-guzzling and the beards, haha. I'm not too fussed about how they will look aesthetically so long as they are tabletop-legal.

Now I just need to decide whether I should include a special weapon like a plasma or meltagun in my squad. Without a codex, I can only go by the plethora of suggestions on the internet which is a little daunting lol.

Thanks again for the help. Looking forward to getting more involved in the hobby and posting regularly here.

Hey first of welcome to the Fang filled with great people. As long as you are not a dark angel. Only joking.

Power fists in a grey hunter pack are always a good choice. Hit slow but when they hit pretty much everything will drop. Great question though I have actually wondered if your allowed to take a bolter and a chainsword?

Nowadays, the growing belief is that a power axe is better than a fist for a Grey Hunter, but tomato tomahtoe.

To the OP, there's circumstantial reasons to take either plasma or melta, but for GH, plasma has been reinvigorated.

Welcome to the Rout, little brother. As you are just starting your build, and don't have a copy of the codex, my suggestion would be to leave a couple models unfinished. Play a few friendly games trying different builds to your list to see what works best with the people you play the most. If nothing else it would be a good time to look into buying some small rare earth magnets and magnetizing a few models to make them a bit more interchangeable. You'll have plenty of bits in the box to work with. Magnets will allow you to use more parts and build fewer models.

Cheers, guys. Decided on the plasma gun for my current 10-man squad. If worse comes to worse and I change my mind, I can always just buy another pack and make up for any "mistakes" then.

One more question regarding weapon equipping: Is it OK to equip a Grey Hunter with both a bolter (not the bolt pistol) and a chainsword? I can't be certain but I read somewhere that its an allowable ability but I'm not sure if its a native ability to the army or if its a special rule of theirs. I kinda just accidentally gave one of my Grey Hunters that combo and realised the difference upon scanning over the sprue again.

Combinations a Grey Hunter can have:

1. Bolter

2. Bolt pistol

3. CCW

4. Bolter + bolt pistol

5. Bolter + CCW

6. Bolt pistol + CCW

7. Bolter +bolt pistol + CCW

No matter the combination shown ON the model, a GH will ALWAYS be equipped with those three items.

The only distinction is a bolt pistol + bolt pistol, as this falls into the Gunslinger special rule. Despite bolt pistols counting as close combat weapons in melee, GH are not allowed to equip two pistol weapons unless they purchase a plasma pistol.
