Truescaling Scouts. Argh, etc

Recommended Posts

So I'm busy doing my truescale force of Sons of Tyr at the moment, and as they're a Raven Guard successor they engage in a lot of covert ops. Whilst all the Marines are trained in such engagements, they also make significant use of Scout units as snipers and recon teams, so my force will include a couple squads of scouts. Unfortunately, given that I'm going for as realistic a look as possible I really need to truescale the scouts as well otherwise they're going to look silly next to the biggerised Marines. If you're interested, you can see the Sons of Tyr here.

Anybody tried truescaling scouts before in a way that worked? Any tutorials anyone knows of? I've done a search already, and maybe it's just me but I turned up nothing - a few shots of some plasticard work but nothing finished. I'm a little dubious as to where to start given that the Scouts, irritatingly enough, aren't as disproportionately built as their powered armour counterparts are...

Any help would be very much appreciated! :wallbash:

Hey man, your Sons of Tyr are looking good. Are you just cutting the legs and filling gaps with green stuff? That seems like a good alternative to what I'm doing with terminator legs. Any tips?

ANyway, I happen to have found probably just the thing you're looking for: True Scale Scouts

It's not really a tutorial, but you get the basic idea from the pics. I would never have thought of using power armor bits on the scouts, but it works very well in this case. Hope it helps>

Cheers buddy! I really like your Celestial Lions and the Praetors of Orpheus as well. I have to say, having made a start with the Terminator-based truescale Marines (like your Lions) I actually massively prefer doing the truescale method employed by Veteran Sergeant, which inspired my Sons of Tyr. You can see his stuff here:

I prefer this method for a number of reasons - it is faster and more forgiving if your GS isn't 100% (although you seem to have no problem with it), but what I like is that it lets you use all of the bits in the existing Marine range without extensive modification necessary to make it fit with a Terminator-based truescale model. Also if you have any intention of using vehicles at any point, my way of truescaling won't make the vehicles look quite as puny. All I'm really doing is the leg trick like you mentioned and GSing the waistline slightly to lengthen the torso.

Anyway, regarding the Scouts, whilst I love that guy's Scythes I'm not too keen on them looking so Rogue Trader-y. It's definitely an idea but I'm not sure I have enough power armoured legs lying around anyway...

Cheers man!

THanks for the compliments man. I may give the leg-chopping method a try, since I planning on true-scaling the army in a variety of ways. I've got some chapter house studios conversion kits on the way, so i'll probably have three or four different methods mixed in with the lions.

If you're not familiar with the "Doghouse" method of true scaling, google that (easier than B&C's search function in my opinion, although it will just take you straight back to here). He uses chaos warrior legs for his original tutorial, and they look quite good. However, there is a lot of green stuff involved in making the boots for power armor.

But...you wouldn't have to worry about that since you're making scouts. They have cloth boots, which would be perfect for the scouts.

So, you cut the torso off, glue the scout torso on, fill the gap in the back, and then just use regular scout arms/heads/accessories. There are chains and stuff on the legs, but I think they would fit in well with the feel of your army, especially since you are using dark silver as a base color. They would fit right in with the look of your librarian. Just shave off chaos-y things. You could also shave the trim off a regular power armor shoulder pad, as use those to bulk them up a bit. Now that I'm typing it out, it makes me want to try.

Hope that helps a bit more.

Okay, I went ahead and tried it out. I used a wolf scout head because I thought it matched the chain a bit better. The chain isn't very infiltratey, but it's another option at least. Also, I didn't green stuff anything, I just glued that plate thingee on the back, since this was just a test.

Lemme know what you think.

I'm not sure how big your method of true scaling is though, so this could very well be too big (provided you like it, of course). Anyway, just something to think about.

Yup, seen the Doghouse method, and I think it looks really good (perfect for Space Wolves, not bad for DA either). Unfortunately I'm not totally sold on it. I'm working on making more dynamic poses for my power armoured Marines and that means the Scouts have to follow suit - and whilst your example looks pretty badass, my planned unit of snipers will look a bit odd just walking forward. I'm actually more interested in that helmet your Scout has on the very far left...trying to place it but no luck so far, any hints? ;)

I am looking at simply going down the same route I went for my PA marines, lengthening their legs at the femur slightly and maybe lengthening the torsos too. It'll have to be a very subtle alteration, though. Will definitely post pics as soon as I've started on them.

One other Q dude (feel free to ignore tho as I'm asking a lot of questions) - your weathering is fantastic. Did you include a tut in your other WIP threads? It looks like you've used powders but I can't tell...going to have to attempt some of that myself!

Here's my solution to TS scouts: I used scouts to make my TS Inquisitor and Rogue Trader.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/282571-.html?m=2

As you can see on my wip Rogue Trader here, I've taken a scout legs and torso, shaved off the belt and buckle, then added a layer of plasticard between the pelvis and torso, one between the boots and knees, and one on the bottom of the boots. I've also filed down the top of the thighs at an angle and refilled them with GS (or milliput) to give him a more upright stance.

I've then shaved off all the detail from the front of the torso and built it up to form a neck guard and remove the hunched over look that normal scouts have. This is clearer in the next photo.

Below is the completed Inquisitor (actually on the advice of someone I filed the crotch down a bit!)

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/279791-.html?m=2

Same process as before but with some more additions: the belt has been added again with a strip of plasticard and a suitable icon for the buckle. In this case I used Catachan arms, CSM gauntlets and the SM terminator crotch guards for shoulder pads. I also added a rear neck guard which I had spare from making TS marines with terminator torsos, but all of these things could be done differently.

Finally here's a scale shot with a standard marine and a TS marine:

Hope that's all clear, any questions please feel free to ask.

Little bit of thread necro here...but it's relevant, and in case anyone else was wondering how well Scouts can be truescaled (at least semi truescaled in the 'spacers at the waist and thigh' way), I've some pictures up in my Sons of Tyr log here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...=0#entry3114165
