narf
Hi Guys ATM i'm considering a few changes to my 5th ed army, i mainly used mech before, and the rough layout was as follows, at 1750pts Rune priest 8x Gh, Drop pod 8x Gh, Drop pod 5x GH, Razorback las plas 5x GH, Razorback las plas 5x GH, rhino 5x WG, Razorback las plas (2 TDA, 3PA) Vindicator Vindicator Dreadnought & Drop pod Dreadnought & Drop pod As you can see lots of tanks, though atm i've had 4-5 games of 6th, with no real drawback with the vehicles, but i'm coming up short on man power. I was thinking of adding in some Guard units, simply as home objective holders. It would be a company command squad, with flamers, and 2-4 units of guardsmen, with autocannons, flamers no hydra's, might go for a leman russ (the one we use to have, exterminator??) but that would be far later. So what i was thinking of doing was to: Drop the 2 dreadnoughts and pods (saves 300 points for the guardsmen) Drop the GH in the rhino, and bolster the two razorback GH units up to 10, and give their WG TDA This would give me: Rune priest 8x Gh, Drop pod 8x Gh, Drop pod 10x GH, Razorback las plas 10x GH, Razorback las plas 4x WG, Razorback las plas (4 TDA) Vindicator Vindicator Guard HQ 2-4 10 man guardsman units Now can WG lead the guardsman units? to provide more flavour etc, in which case i have a few points left for Wg, otherwise Lone wolves. Also can my Rune priest lead guardmen? (they are shown as battle brothers in the book) Planning to model them as iceworlders, using some none GW models, are there any suitable greatcoat models out there? Emperor's Scourge
You could always try to model them after the Kaerls in Battle of the Fang. I'm doing something similar for my Great Crusade Wolves. Jonny Wolf
If you can get a copy of the latest White Dwarf, Phill Kelly has an army that is along your theme in there. I'm not a huge fan of his color scheme, but you get the idea. Blacksad
codex Space Wolves, page 86 Pack Leaders: The Wolf Guard act not only as bodyguards for the lords of Fenris but also as leaders to those with less battlefield experience. Before the battle, each Wolf Guard has the option of being split off from his pack and assigned to lead a different pack from the following list: Blood Claws, Swiftclaw Bike Packs, Grey Hunters, Wolf Scouts, Long Fangs. Only one Wolf Guard may join each pack in this manner. Wolf Guard in Terminator armour, with jump packs or mounted on Space Marine Bikes may not join Wolf Scout units. SgtTelion
I take it you dont want to put the GH's in the Razorbacks for transport? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257908-chapter-serfs-wolves-and-allies/#findComment-3139201 Share on other sites
frostclaw222
The Kaerls were (from all appearances in the fluff) strictly an infantry force, mostly perimeter security for the Fang and counter-boarding parties in the Legion fleet. Bearing that in mind, I'd keep the armor on the Wolves side of things, and augment with foot. That being said, though, we know the Kaerls needed rebreathers just to go outside the Fang, and that they employed some fairly heavy weaponry, so heavy weapon squads, veterans, even drop troops are likely all permissible as far as the fluff is concerned. Blacksad
I'd think the Aettguard also employ the Leman Russ tanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/257908-chapter-serfs-wolves-and-allies/#findComment-3139236 Share on other sites
frostclaw222
One would think that, but (with the Russ tank retcon), the Aettguard were militia. Supplementary forces, relying on the Wolves to act as the first and foremost fighting force. Fluffyness aside, I do not think they maintained their own armor contingent, and almost certainly not outside of Fenris. The Wolves were the strike force outside of Fenris; the Aettguard and their fleet-deployed brethren were a repulsion and consolidation force, at best. narf
I take it you dont want to put the GH's in the Razorbacks for transport? Hi, no with the increase in range for the GH now (move and fire at 24") the tanks will be used as cover, and to remove alpha strike units in my deployment zone (twin linked plasma, and lascannon works a treat) The GH will be foot slogging across the battlefield, shooting all the way. Interesting about WG, would have been nice to put them into the guard units, but i'l just run some lone wolves instead then. I'm really only thinking about using them as objective holders and meat shields, too add a few more feet on the ground.
