1:1 Scale Bolt Pistol

Good day all.

As the title says, I decided to do something crazy and build a 1:1 scale Bolt Pistol. Why? Because everyone needs a full size Bolt Pistol in their gaming room. But where to start?

Well for me it was trying to rationalize how the thing worked in my head as I sketched out how big it should be.

From what there is on the web, everyone views it as a regular pistol; with the bolt placed into the firing chamber

from the magazine and then the spent casing being ejected.

But the thing seems too stubby for that to work. So what I rationalized Instead is that the firing chamber is part of the magazine.

The gun only has a slide mechanism to eject the spent round through a top or side port. The trigger is not a mechanical linkage,

but fires the bolt through electrical ignition.

The Bolt Pistol works because it is a deceptively simple design made from high strength super alloys that withstand the pressures and stress of firing a rocket grenade. Then again we are dealing with high gothic fantasy space opera, your guess is as good as mine.

So this is what I have as of now:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltPistolunderconstruction7.jpg

I built the gun body from 2"x6" pine, then made the panels from 1/4" poplar. As you can see the magazine is removable for dramatic effect.

The grip is from a Nerf Maverick gun and gives you an idea of how big this thing is. Here it is with the grip:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltPistolunderconstruction8.jpg

The bolts worked out to be 1 1/4" in diameter (the size or the wooden dowel I had on hand) so it is also heavy.

More work to do on finishing the body, and then adding the barrel and sight optic.

More to come.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen.

I have added the sight optic and barrel with a touch of superglue just to see how it looks. Here I am holding it:

I see a bolt pistol being issued with a grip sized to either a normal human or a marine. A marine with much larger hands would require a larger grip; and since I am not a marine, the grip is normal human issue.

Here is a shot of it on top of my large Coleman cooler for size comparision:

To answer your question Brother EgoDraconumNigrorum, I may tackle the Bolter itself but I am guessing a 2" diameter bolt round for it. That's going to take some planing. We will see.

Until the next update.

Hmmmm. Very interseting. :)

A 3/4" diameter round you say? I thought caliber was a reference to the barrel diameter vs. the barrel lenght, rather than the actual diameter of the bullet/cartridge. I don't know.

If you are correct Brother drakus40k about the bolter and bolt pistol using the same ammunition, then it will be a bit easier if I try to build a bolter as well. I now see something along the lines of a Thompson SMG, built to fire a .45 pistol round.

We shall see.

And thanks for the information.

Well I have progressed some more with the pistol having decided to make a sickle shaped clip and a single bolt round to display with it.

And on its side. I think a stroage case might be in order.

Now on to filling and sanding.

Every time I stumble across one of these threads I want to make my own bolt pistol or bolt gun and yours is no exception. Sadly my skills with wood are nowhere near as good as yours :).

You look to be off to a great start and I can't wait to see how you start detailing the pistol. I also like the idea you had of the bolt round for display.

good luck with the rest of the build :)

Good day all.

I've returned to the Bolt Pistol and have now added details to the magazine and body of the gun. I also made up a high capasity magazine to go with the standard curved mag.

The grip is now ready to finish while the body needs a few more coats of lacquer to seal the wood grain. I hope to post more updates sooner, but only time will allow that. Until the next update.

Although the Bolt Pistol is still a wip, I have put together the beginnings of a Bolter, built around the high capasity magazine I made for the pistol.

Here is what I have so far:

Good day all. I hope everyone had time over the summer to play a few games and work on their armies. But after putting aside the Bolt Pistol for other things I've come back to it and have now sealed the woodgrain and started to prime it.

Here is what I have now: Left Side

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltPistolWIP6_zps2b9f91b2.jpg

Right Side:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltPistolWIP3_zps4ec7dc0c.jpg

The magazine was finished in a dark metalic blue that I think will look good overall. More sanding and filling to be done before its ready to paint.

Here is a shot of the business end:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltPistolWIP5_zpsa324c1c1.jpg

I added a thicker barrel to the inside of the muzzle, so now my bolt rounds are 1" in diameter.

I've also progressed its bigger brother, the Bolt Rifle. Here it is with magazine:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltRifleWIP6_zps165c3784.jpg

Now Left Side:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltRifleWIP3_zpsaef49c41.jpg

Right Side:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltRifleWIP_zpsb60e515f.jpg

And with the barrel insert I made to give actual depth when you look at it from the front:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Works%20In%20Progress/40K%20Bolt%20Pistol/BoltRifleWIP5_zps613b0d53.jpg

I'm not sure if I should add the cocking lever (If that is the right word for it) to the ejection port. If the magazine forms the firing chamber then I see the gun ejecting the last round then a new magazine being inserted into the body and the gun ready to fire again. The round knob on both guns is the selector knob. I see the Pistol having two settings; single and burst. While the Rifle would have three; single, burst and full.

Detail wise I'm going for a cleaner look. With the Pistol I plan on adding socket heat cap screws around the body and an Imperial Aquila on each side at the front. Maybe a Purity Seal, we'll see.

I'll hopefully post more often if time, family, work allow. Wish me luck. Let me know what you think.

Holy :cuss a bolter is supposed to be .75?

Haha, I can't imagine rapid firing that. Single shot on a .50BMG is gnarly enough. .50 Beowulf even worse as the AR platform soaks up the force no where near as good. I guess thats why i'm not a space marine.
