Cato Sicarius - Commission UPDATED 9/1/2012

Greetings folks. After (another) hiatus, I have returned with a commission project. This time, it's the decorated champion of the Ultramarines 2nd Company. I like the model, and his fluff, so this was an exciting opportunity for me.

The customer requested that Mr. Sicarius don the helmet and plasma pistol combo, so I got him assembled and cleaned and away I go!

The beginnings:

As you can see, this was a really good cast. To be honest, I haven't had a bad Finecast yet, but GW seems to really be improving upon the stuff. It's nice to see smooth surfaces, sharper detail, and a material that is just far easier to work with than metal.

I then moved on to the armor:

As you can see, I went for a bit of a "top-down" source lighting effect on the armor, which will hopefully turn out nicely. I will do my best to repeat the effect throughout the miniature, as if the Loyalist hero has a spotlight on his face.

Anyway, I will keep this updated as often as possible - this time, up through and including completion. ;)

Looking great so far! I really love the way you've highlighted the blue. I think it will contrast really well with the red (if you're painting him the 'Eavy metal way).

I can't wait to see some more colours on him :)

Thanks to all!

I achieved the blue using a bit of Regal to start. I then shaded, progressively, with thin layers of Regal + Necron Abyss, and then a little Abaddon (Chaos) Black. The key is starting closer to the shaded recesses each time and painting "towards" the shadow. Very little paint on the brush. Don't want thick streaks or pools of water.

I then reclaimed some Regal Blue area, and mixed up through Calgar Blue (though Ultramarines Blue would work), and finally a teensy bit of Fenrisian Grey.

I may do a tutorial sometime, because just explaining the colors is often not enough to achieve the effect. Hence the reason why 'Eavy Metal articles, even if copied, don't yield the same results. So much depends on the consistency of the paint, the brush, how much is on the brush, etc.

I will next be doing the gold trim.

I have so more "shine" effects to add, but I don't want the metal to overpower the saturated reds, blues, and whites he will adorn in the end.

Gehenna's Gold mixed with Rhinox Hide (Shining Gold + Scorched Brown) as the base. Then blend up to straight gold, followed by gold + Runefang Steel (Mithril Silver). I then mixed the brown with black to "line" the details, else the gold just becomes a blob. Then a sharp line of Silver in very select places, followed by a glaze of some browns and purples.

Some updates. Here's a bit of the cloak work thus far:

I will probably pursue a simpler pattern on the interior of the cloak than the one offered by Masterclass painter Joe Tomaszewski (who I've met). Anyway, comments welcome!!!

I might do a tutorial sometime on the red cloak. It was quite difficult to get it that smooth. Lots of shading, highlighting, reclaiming, glazing, repeat...

It was tough to darken it while still having a very cherry appearance. If you follow most painting guides, they only list the color selections and the layer order. That will usually result in something rather dull and streaky.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bit of a slow week for painting. I did some extra business on the cape freehand and started work on the banner. The bone/parchment look has been slightly difficult to achieve with this model, for some reason, but it's getting there. More to come Sunday.

I snuck in a little more time for painting. This time, I went away from my traditional approach of painting a detail to completion before moving on and elected to lay some base coats down. This helps give me (and you) a better idea of what's going where. Enjoy!

That is an amazing job dude! Really smooth blends and the highlighting is first class. You're making me want to go back and finish my Sicarius that has been sitting on my shelf for a year. Keep up the good work and those tutorials would be most appreciated!

Thanks everyone. The parchment looking banner has been the biggest PITA thus far. Bone colors just don't coat over anything very well; at least in my extensive experience. I try to avoid it where possible. It also dries out on a wet palette.

Well, ladies and gents, here's the finished product (for now). I may go back and see things I want to touch up before shipping it out to the customer, but everything has technically been addressed here. The client asked for a simple, urban rubble feel, which was slightly difficult to achieve given how much space Mr. Sicarius eats up on the base. I think this works well here though.
