What size of terrain?

Recommended Posts

One of the things that I have listened too quite a bit on pod casts and around the gaming clubs is that the fortress of redemption is too big to use.

What about other terrain items? If we based it on base size either diameter, square base size, or sq inches.

The other question is how tall is too tall? I see some pretty tall buildings with three and four floors. What do you like and what is just distracting and in the way?

When you have plenty of pieces to choose from what do you pass over based on size? Assuming that all of it is well built and cool looking.

Capitan, what do you consider too long and too wide?

space wolf, are you talking about the fortress of redemption?

I was thinking of building some pieces that would count as either the Bastion or the Aegis Defence. My main idea with these is that they appear to be the only ones that people use and looking at the same pieces will get really borring. Also I thought it would be fun to build an Orc, Tau, Eldar, or Nid version of these.

Have any of you started projects to do that? What are you using for counts as X terrain piece?

Thanks for the specifics that really helps. I was thinking about doing some pieces that would be on 12"x12" bases but that would be too big.

What about hight? With the increased emphasis on flyers do you feel that taller towers are needed? Something that gets your ground troops big guns on an equal footing with the flyers? Or does it just not make much of a difference?

I think for city fight games, a few 12x12 are ok, just not too many of that size. Throw in a few 6x6 and 6x12 and you've got a nice interchangeable bored ready to go.

I also think it depends on what you're putting on that base. If you have a 12x12 base hill, or something that has a path though it, so it's not really a solid chunk of impassable terrain, you're fine.

As far as somthing being too far in length, I think there's an exception to the rule. If you have a mighty city wall spanning the edge of the table, and it's ON the edge of the table, that could make for some great campaign's. The same thing could go for a cliff face, or a beach head, or a threach system. As long as it doesnt extend more than a foot out(maybe less for some instances such as the beach head).

If one of those objects where to be rediculas in height, as long as its off to the side it doesn't really do much except add to the setting, showing us the impressiveness of the future. How often do we use each and every foot of a table? Maybe a massive towering foot of some hive city sitting in the back corner of the table woulnt have any effect on gameplay, but each time you look over and see it, you'll be reminded that you're army is fighting to drive off the orks attempting to kill those inside.

I like the way you think War Angel. I love some narrative with my games.

Right now I am working on a ruin that is on a 12x12 base but it is because the base extends 2" on each side so the ruin is only 10x10 and about 9" high. I am also building a bridge. It is supposed to be 4" wide and 10" long but I am extending it to be 12" long and 6" wide so that a Rhino with side sponsons can drive across it but not a land raider.

I will post a progress pic later.

If it can be used as a table in it's own right, it's too big.

Not true, as long as the entire peice is not difficult terrain, and there is a significant amount of moving space/firing lanes, then a table sized peice of terrain is possible. My dad and I one made an 8 by 4 table out of some kind of foam and carved hills and trenches into it.

Sorry for the blurry photo but this is the corner section of the piece I am building. It has about another inch to go and I kept the Coke can next to it to show a size comparison.

Thanks War Angel! Progress is pretty slow with this stuff because you have to wait for things to dry and it takes a while. I built a small stone Aegis Defense line to see if I could get the scale correct. It is within 1/16 of an inch, but looks a little bulky because of being built from river stone. I was thinking of putting some sandbags on the top since the height was a little shy of the height of the defense line. Take a look.

Somthing definitely looks off about it, I can't put my finger on it. I think it needs some paint. I would say use more then just two sand bags, add a but more protection. Other then that can you add somthing to the bottem to make it taller?

I could add a 1/2 layer to the bottom but then I would need to remove the items off of the top or it would be taller than the Aegis piece. I thought about adding some blocks to the front to make i t less 2 dimensional.

Here is a pick with the ruined building pieces laid out on the design paper. They aren't finished but it is a good idea of how big it will be:

  • 2 months later...

I finally painted the bridge I was working on. The spacemarine and rhino are there just for size comparison.

SIZE:

13 Inches long

7 Inches wide

3.5 Inches tall

The bridge will fit a Land Raider just fine. I don't know about a super heavy like a baneblade but since it is not weight rated to handle something that big it doesn't really matter lol.

This terrain model should be usable with any of the games I play (or would like to play).

I built some of the modular GW buildings to 3 and 4 levels high and they work just fine. As long as the footprint isn't too big, I don't see any problem making it as high as you want. You will have to clump some pieces together though. A lone building 12" tall in a world of 4" buildings looks kinda out of place.

Thanks for your kind words brothers.

I use Hirst Co. Rubber molds and cast the blocks out of a mixture of hydrostone and dental stone and plaster. Here is a link to the Hirst web page.

I am currently working on a few rubble walls, some chemical plant stuff, a bastion, and something similar to the new trenches and bunker that just came out on GW's web site.

I will post some more pics soon.

Not the best pictures but I built these little half walls to just throw out randomly on the table. There are two for each player. They are built from some left over blocks that didn't cast correctly and a few odds and ends that I had laying around.

Sorry for the poor pic quality. My lighting was not good today.
