Fytharin
Vylka Fenryka In the nightmare future of the 41st Millennium, Mankind teeters upon the brink of extinction. The galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man, beset on all sides by ravening aliens, foul traitors and Warp-spawned Daemons, looks once more to its greatest heroes to stave off the encroaching darkness. EDIT: Well brothers....my units have been captured...Was in a car accident last evening with my mini's on my way down to the local game store and I did a barrel roll IRL. =/ Flipped my car and before I could get my mini's out they towed my car so I have to pay $100 to go free my guys and PRAY TO GOD they aren't all destroyed...hopefully I will have pictures of my battered, scared, a wounded guys this evening. >.< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/ Share on other sites

Fytharin
Yup I'm ok, came out with just a scratch and considering I ended up in the back seat of my car (I was driving) I was very lucky. And I just got finished dusting off my minis and I have a soda covered razorback, two TWC riders with missing arms and a wounded GH but so far I think I'm just down a few bases that I couldn't find in all the glass and dirt but all things considered everything's in pretty good shape. I was able to find all the broken arms (somehow) and everyone's accounted for considering my car's a wreck. My camera is locked away in my roomates room so I'll be posting pics shortly once everything's cleaned up Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3141770 Share on other sites

Fytharin
No it was just to get my stuff, and it was only because it's Sunday but they're only open during the week 8-5 and I live in the foothills and my place of work is an hour away so I'm not going to take 2 hours off to go get my stuff during the week. So I really didn't have a choice but to go get it today. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3141775 Share on other sites

Fytharin
Here we go! Sorry for the sub-par quality, my camera isn't that great. Also if you see random blotches, it's probably soda I tried to clean them up before the photos but like I said, my accident was pretty messy. That is also the reason for any missing arms you'll see. LOL First mini I ever painted http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01405.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01399.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01402.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01400.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01398.jpg I did these wolves all different colors because I wanted to know what colors and patterns looked best before I did them on my TWC so these are basically my test dummies. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01410.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01414.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01413.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01412.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01411.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3141879 Share on other sites
Fytharin
Ok TWC and my Wolf Guard that took me 7 hours to paint. Really like how the pattern turned out, haven't finished the face yet. And need to finish the riders eyes http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01403.jpg Only just started on this one. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01404.jpg Really enjoyed painting this mini and I'm really happy with how he turned out. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01406.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01409.jpg Really really REALLY happy with how the raw hide ended up looking. Had some really good advice from a friend that helped me get it. Also the cape is shiny because I put 'ardcoat on it because the paint kept getting rubbed off. Still trying to figure out how to dull it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01408.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01396.jpg This is my first vehicle that I'm still working on. Having to try lots of new techniques that I've never used before, the mud, burn marks from the smoke stacks, gonna be trying scratches, dents and bullet holes on it. I'll be sure to post pics when it's all done. But here's the WIP pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01415.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01416.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01417.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01418.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01419.jpg Please keep in mind that I only started painting 2 months ago and barely had my first game two weeks ago. I am desperate to learn what else you guys are doing and how I can improve. The razorback and the Wolf Guard are my newest paint jobs as well as the Grey Hunter with the powerfist so those are probably a good representation of where my skill is at right now. Ulricspath
Happy to hear you came back with only a few scratches, you were really lucky! Your painting is a good start and there is some things you can do to improve, the easiest is by using washes, it creates shadow in the recess areas which makenthe miniature both more realistic and tone the bright colours down a bit and gives them more of a ruff feeling. The second is the highlighting. Try to make the highlights equaly thin over the whole areas off the armour, or else it will not look so good. Games workshop has some good tutorials on how to make good marine armour. Also when you feel that you know the colours and which ones is good together, try with layering affects, for example faces to start with a darker brown and slowly works upward to lighter, layerwise the create depths in the faces. IMHO painting eyes is very hard and takes alot of trial and error so I just stick with all black eye sockets which can be just as nice as with eyes. Hope it helps and good luck! Forté
Damn girl. Kicking ass, taking names and still getting your minis back. Can see you're going to be a tough one around here. I'm sure you'll meet Skadi too at some point. She keeps up Blood Claws in line. As for painting/ modeling, here's a few pointers. -Undercoat. I'm not totally sure that you are or not but an undercoat/ primer really helps your paint stick better and go where you want it too. -Get a hand drill. These should be available at any GW or IGS. Drilling out gun barrels may seem daunting but can add that little detail which is missing. -Keep a point on your brushes. When your painting, try not to let the paint go within a couple of mm of the metal part of your brush. Having a controllable amount of paint in the bristles makes a huge difference. -Listen to the comments people make here. I've not seen anything but good comments from people since being here in regards to people's minis and how to improve. Last of all, welcome to the Fang. I've been base coating with black and recently I tried using wolf grey from Army Painter I like them both for different things. 2. Hand drill: *squirm**squirm* I've been resisting the urge but ok! You've convinced me. :tu: 3. Yeah...been trying desperately to keep my brushes alive, getting better slowly...<.< 4. I would agree, everyone here has been very helpful from day one. I think I might stick around. :P EDIT: Oh yeah...I know I need to get around to bases eventually, right now I have a chill tournament on the 14th that I'm just desperately trying to get somewhat presentable for. I want to at least have everything put together LOL I think after then I'll probably start looking at basing my guys...believe me I really want to right now but I'm resisting. >.< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3142138 Share on other sites
Wulfebane
Washes. Most especially a flesh wash. On some of the models it looked like maybe you have a devlan mud/agrax earthshade and a black wash, but that might just be residual soda... But a flesh wash is very important for, well, flesh.. but also leather/hide, and gold, all three of which Wolves tend to have in abundance. I promise tbat the use of a wash on any of those areas will really make them pop with more definition. Edit: Whether you do or don't have a brown/black wash, I would recommend using it on the crevasses of your armoured models and vehicles... Again, because it'll pop better. Fytharin
I'm about to post updated pics on my razorback where I used massive washes on a part of it. However my problem with using washes for crevices is I never seem to use enough to get in and when I do it dyes everything else around it. Is that because you guys are going back and painting over the areas that got dyed that are around the crevices? Just waiting for pics to transfer to photobucket and then I'll post... Behold about 1 hours worth of work of experimentation and layers. I was REALLY wanting wooden floors inside and I used to always love the look of wood that had been soaked to the bone that you usually find in cabins where people trekking in and out of snow is common and I think I got pretty close. While this isn't a great pic for the door, I really wanted to get a heavy rust feel on the door as well which I think I accomplished so behold, my heavy wash experiment. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01427.jpg A nice front profile. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/zoogarama/40k%20Mini%20pics/DSC01430.jpg QUESTION: Who knows how to do good scratches on a vehicle...I really want to know how.... EDIT: I actually have four washes, Black, Brown, Blue and an orangish one I was planning on experimenting with for rust runoff. Wulfebane
Is that because you guys are going back and painting over the areas that got dyed that are around the crevices? Yep. Or atleast most do. Wash is usually the first thing to apply after base coats and before details. Some people will go back and fill in each crevice more precisely with a fine brush, but if you start off with wash, its less tedious. QUESTION:Who knows how to do good scratches on a vehicle...I really want to know how.... Still too nervous to do it myself... Only advice I can give is, if you want it to look good, imply the chipped paint, don't physically damage the model's surface. Also, and unforunately so few care to, but if you aren't a very good painter, don't do it at all. For a lot of people it just ends up looking a hot mess.. Like a toddler took it out into the mud to play with his finger paints.... That said, I think you did a pretty good job with the muddy tank treads. I wanted to make sure I had more buildup in the rear since that's, realistically, where most of it will be. Having said that I think I used about 1/3 of the well for Citadels mud texture doing this model alone. :wallbash: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3142163 Share on other sites
Ulricspath
Another way of controling the amount of paint and not get that blobby paint that get all over the mini is by thinning it down with some water, but remember, not in the painting cup. When you paint put som colour on the lid and thin in with just a drop or two of water (to much will turn it into wash) and youll see it will become much easier to paint the infantry. postal105
you can also go to a craft shop and buy some Blending Medium that you can add to your paint it also helps if you want to mix colors to come up with a new shade it should not be all that expensive. also another good tip you can get some of the same colors not all but a good number also different colors then what citadel offers you that costs far less at a craft shop and in larger sized bottles then what they sell the citadel paints for at your lgs. Fytharin
Hello everyone! Sorry I've been gone for so long....been busy with work amongst other life things. First and foremost....my army got stolen!!! Isn't it great.....my car got broken into and to be honest I think they thought my case had camera equipment or something similar....Oh well...on the nice side though all of my army gets to be painted to a nice standard now that I know more about what I'm doing! In order to stay positive I'm going to document everything which means lots and lots of pictures and I hope, lots and lots of feedback. I'm planning on being more bold with my minis than I was before and so far I think I've already managed to do that!!! So take a look, please comment, constructive criticism is always appreciated. Advice on picture taking would be greatly appreciated too.... Fytharin
Behold!!! The naked goodness that will be my new army....so the only things that weren't stolen were one of the drop pods, aegis defense line, the rhino and the whirlwind. Otherwise everything else is completely new within a span of two months. I had a wonderful friend donate 3/4's of the grey hunters you see as well as the termies and cannis so uber credit goes out to him. I've managed to pick up most of the HQ's and a few other things aren't pictured here but for the most part this is it. :3 http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_0139_zpsa53fa91d.jpg Here's a close up on my fen wolves so far.... http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_4178_zpsded1bc8f.jpg http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_4181_zpscdecf3cf.jpg http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_4180_zpsc6d9413f.jpg My first attempt ever at green stuff. This mini was a mess, it needs a fang, claws, eraser size bubbles filled in so that's what prompted my bravery into green stuff. I like it for a first try. http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_4175_zps43bffedc.jpg This next guy is a complete work in progress, especially seeing how gross some details look blown up but I also don't like how the helm turned out. Not done, do not judge too fiercely but still, there are things I do like about him so here's the WIP http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_4184_zps2d5203dd.jpg http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_4173_zps8149442c.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3566100 Share on other sites
Fytharin
Finally.....so this is going to be one of my main projects for a while and I will probably photograph this pretty heavily throughout just because I feel like one: it will be pretty kick ass in the end. But also because I've never done something quit like this before. So here we go... http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad207/zoogarama1/IMG_4182_zpsc000670d.jpg WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE YOU SAY?! So I'm secretly in love with this Stonehorn miniature. I love the character of it, I love all of the little bits and details that Citadel has poured into and I pray and hope for the day when all minis have the heart and soul that this one does. So much so that I was determined to use it in my Space Wolf Army and I found a way thanks to a friend who is probably as crazy as I am. My plan is to convert this mammoth looking creature into a space wolfy predator of awesomeness by replacing the ogres and their throne with an open topped predator turret. I am beyond excited to get going on this so cheers brothers! I will keep you posted regularly as updates come along on this insanity. :3 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3566102 Share on other sites
MaveriK
Your recent work is beautiful. Much improvement from the looks of things. Keep up the good work! As for the ogre stone horn LMAO I had the very same idea long ago. I currently have two Thundertusk giants in my warband. I've always love the idea of a mammoth, I was very tempted to buy the forgeworld chaos mammoth until the plastic thundertusk caught my eye on its release a few years back. Good luck with your vision of work! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3566314 Share on other sites
Fytharin
LOL I almost did the same thing with that mammoth. I like this miniature a little better though just because it has more of a wolfish feel and there are so many bits in the kit that i can use here and later on, if this works out like it does in my brain then I'll be very tempted to buy a second one. Hahaha And thank you for the compliment! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/258324-fyths-wips-thread/#findComment-3566457 Share on other sites
