1500 Necrons vs Blood Angels

Played this game against my brother... although I am forced to admit that I fielded the heathen xenos forces of the Necrontyr against his dreadnought-based Blood Angels. The battle was a lot closer than I'd expected, considering hull points.

So, here are the armies used in the final game;

We rolled Short Table Edges for deployment, and I won the choice of table halves. For a mission, we decided to use Pitched Battle from the third edition rulebook and 3e style Victory Points.

My deployment zone held a river as well as a landing pad connected to a minehead by a long bridge. I used a Refused Flank deployment, focussing my infantry and Spyders inside the crook of the river in front of the landing pad, while my Tomb Blades took the other half of the deployment zone.

My opponent decided to concentrate everything on one side of his deployment zone, directly opposite my infantry. He split his Tactical Squad, leaving the plasma cannon on a slag heap while the plasma gun and sergeant deployed forwards behind the drill.

Turn 1

Librarian "I Can't Believe It's Not Mephiston" (Hereafter referred to as 'Mephy') siezed the initiative. The Death Company, Fistnaught and Brother Horatio picked their way through an almost pleasant forest while Mephy strolled forwards, warding himself with his powers. Brother Fernando took to the sky upon wings of psychic might, leaping straight over the drill towards the Necron lines.

The Plasma Cannon over-heated, but its wielder lived. Brother Virgil took aim and downed a Tomb Blade, but its Ressurection Protocols restored it before its squadron even noticed its lack.

In return, the Tomb Blades advanced up the flank on top of the fortified landing pad, while the smaller squadron moved to support the Yellow Immortals on the minehead landing pad. The Immortals on the ground and their Spyder support backed away from the oncoming horde. Their combined fire downed Brother Fernando and wounded the Talondread.

Turn 2

The Blood Angels continued their advance despite their already-terrible losses, albeit at a reduced rate due to several poor Terrain roles. The combined fire of the Plasma Gun and Brother Virgil downed two Tomb Blades, but the Plamsa Cannon was far off target. Three Immortals were downed by to Death Company bolters, but two of them regained their feet mere moments later.

More hyper-accurate gaussfire from the Tomb Blades and the Immortal squad atop the landing pad destroyed the Talonnaught and Brother Fernando. The two larger Immortal squads fired upon the Death Company and Mephy himself, although the librarian proved impervious to fire. Two of the Death Company fell, however.

Turn 3

The Blood Angels long run continued. Iocapo's plasma gun saw off the last of the smaller Tomb Blade squadron, whilst the plasma cannon overheated again, though the operator survived the experience. Another Immortal fell to bolter-fire, along with two from the leftmost squad who succumbed to Brother Orlando's heavy Flamer. The Death Company, Brother Orlando and Mephy hit the Necron lines like the proverbial truck. Mephy passed both of his checks against Mindshackle Scarabs and proceeded to Force Weapon the Overlord to an early grave, while Orlando butchered the squad after losing a hull point to overwatch fire, leaving only a single Immortal and the Red Lord remaining and Mephy disengaged. The Death Company fared less well, losing two Brothers to overwatch and felling only a single Immortal before losing two more brothers to the Blue Lord's warscythe. The squad's power fist dealt with another two Immortals, but both of them recovered.

The surviving Tomb Blades turbo-boosted up the flank with the intention of pouncing upon Brother Virgil, while the unengaged Immortal squad took a single hull point from Brother Horatio. Combat saw the Spyders joining the Red Lord against Brother Orlando and the death of both a Spyder and the last Immortal from that squad. In a staggering display of incompetence, the surviving Spyder failed to damage the recalcitrant dreadnought. However, the Red Lord managed to deprive it of both and arm and its motive capabilities.

Turn 4

Brother Horatio advanced, as did Combat Squad Iocapo. Mephiston skirted around the melee, intending to support the Death Company. The Plasma Cannon overheated again, although once more its bearer's power armour protected him. Combined fire from Virgil, Iocapo and Horatio saw the entire squad atop the landing pad downed, their Court Lord overseer falling at the last to a snap-decision shot from Mephy's plasma pistol. The Court Lord restored himself, but not before his charges had been recalled to the tombs.

The Blades skirted up the flank once more, preparing to fire upon Virgil, while the Yellow Lord advanced on Mephy. With no shooting available, we went straight to combat. The Yellow Lord assaulted Mephy, ensnaring him within first his Mindshackle Scarabs, before capturing him within a Tesseract Labyrinth. Orlando fell to the Spyder and Lord, while the Death Company and Blue Squad continued to stalemate.

Turn 5

Horatio went after the remaining Spyder, destroying it with a Magna-grapple, while the Plasma Cannon obliterated the Tomb Blades. The Red Lord took Brother Virgil's full attentions, but simply shrugged them off his sempiternal weave as he marched to the aid of his brethren against the death company. Aid that was not in fact needed as the Blue Lord and his pet powerfist finished the job.

This freed up the remaining Immortals to begin the long march towards Virgil and the two halves of Squad Iocapo, pausing only long enough to strip the power fist from Horatio. This was a mistake that was to prove costly, however.

Turn 6

Horatio turned its Frag Cannon, Heavy Flamer and Magna-Grapple on Blue Squad, wiping them out with the aid of Iocapo and Virgil. The Blue Lord joined them in eternal sleep...

The Red Lord continued the long march, only to fall an inch short of engaging Squad Iocapo in close quarters, while the Yellow Lord attempted to close with Horatio to put the Furioso out of its misery. To his shock, a single fletchette from the Frag Cannon found its way into a weak point in his Weave, felling him catastropically. He did not get back up.

End Result:

Marginal Victory to the Blood angels. Victory Points were within the 200 point limit for a Draw until the uncontested table quarter held by the support section of Squad Iocapo and Honoured Brother Virgil was factored in, bringing the Blood Angels' victory points to just above the cutoff. This game was a LOT closer than I imagined it would be, and I think I learned a lot! Especially about dealing with Mephy... and the true power of Blood Talons.

Yeah, nice report. However, I have to congratulate your opponent on the win since this forum is PA primarily and you were playing Necrons! :tu:

I really enjoyed seeing your old 2nd edition style Necrons, not to mention your terrain bringing back some memories too!

You're clearly older than I thought you were! :D
