Starting with Grey Knights

Paladin Invictus

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I am new to 40k and have been introduced by a mate and the first 3 HH books. Now after some more research on Nathaniel Garro and with him being my favourite character from the books so far I have decided to collect the Grey Knights. I was wondering if you guys would be able to give me some advice on what to get to start off with and any painting tips.

Thanks

PI

Well there is a forum for army lists. Many of them look the same really. But are a good starter to get a stable army going. Once you get a hang of the units you have and options, its time to make the army more personal and in your own style.

What I think many people are suggesting is for starters:

- Grand master

A tough guy. He grands abilities to other units, balancing up some parts the Grey knights are missing or gives a boost.

- Ordo Malleus Inquisitor

Another favorite leader. He is much cheaper and grants powerful magic from Divination (from the rule book). He is usually equipped on this forum with terminator armor, psycannon and what ever gear you find suits you.

- Strike squad

These are "cheap" Grey knights. A 10 man unit with 2 psycannons, 1 Daemon hammer, and psybolt ammunition upgrade really dishes out a lot when used right. The ability to deep strike (come in anywhere on the battle field) makes them even more dangerous.

- Terminators

Upgraded version of strike squad. Tougher armor, and additional attack in close combat. Though their cost is doubled. Good thing about terminators, is that they can move, shoot and charge into close combat with heavy weapons (weapons that require the user to stand still for its full effect) without being slowed down in any way.

- Interceptors

Are strike squads with better move. Usually used as support unit, that can move into position where they are needed. Some of us use them as martyrs, to hunt down tanks from the rear or hunt down weaker enemy support units. But this is really expensive, due to their points cost.

- Dreadnought

In the previous edition these where for most Grey knight players a "must have". Never used one my self though.

Its used for the Grey Knights as a long range fire support platform. Equipping it with autocannons on both arm and upgrading the ammunition to psybolt. This makes the dreadnought a killer against light and medium vehicles. This setting is called a Psi-rifle dread

- Nemesis dreadknight

Got a nice boost in the lastest edition. A usual setting for this guy is Personal teleporter (Expensive!), and heavy incinerator. This makes the dreadknight a fast moving monster, and can easily take out light/medium infantry with ease with its incinerator.

Now there is alot of alternatives with Inquisitors and henchmen too of course. But I am no expert with that branch, nor am I an expert on normal GK either ;)

But I have dedicated myself to pure Grey Knights.

So aht I would suggest is to get strike squads for starters. You will probably use them. These strike squads can be made as all the power armored units. Strike squad, interceptors, purifiers, purgation.

A nemesis dreadknight is a nice addition too. But thats more of a personal note. Look it over carefully, do you want one, and does it suit your play style.

On to the painting of the grey knights. There are many nice guides on youtube and on this forum I think.

But in general they are pretty easy to paint if you want them in their basic color.

Welcome first of all.

Vash gave some useful advice/guidance/information above so I won't repeat myself. I'm fairly new to GK myself so don't take everything I say as read.

It's worth getting an idea fairly early on of which way you want to go with your models as there are three relatively distinctive routes. These are Henchmen, Power armour and terminators.

Henchmen

If you are keen to play with a henchmen (unlocked as troops when Coteaz is used as an HQ unit), then there are lots of choices for models to use. Some come as GW standard models (Jokaero, Psykers etc) whilst some others Death Cult Assassins (DCA), Warrior Acolytes are more varied. Personally I'll be using Dark Eldar Wyches for DCA and currently Sisters of Battle for power armoured acolytes (longer term I will use Imperial Guard kasrkin and forgeworld plasma guns).

If you like the idea of these units then this is a very viable choice alongside other GK staples.

Power armour

This covers the standard Strike, Purifier, Purgation and Interceptor squads (and some characters etc). All viable units and commonly used with varying builds and deployments (deep strike, walking, transported). This isn't actually a route I'll go down long term and I have little experience personally so won't go into detail personally.

Terminators

We have access to both standard terminators (as troops) and also improved terminators with 2 wounds - Paladins. With Draigo in the army these become troop choices and are a popular choice alongside Dreadknights. Due the high points costs it is possible to produce 1500-2000pt armies with a very small number of units/models.

This is a rather simplistic view of things but I do think it's important to try and streamline your army. If you chose a bit of everything you don't end up with a very effective force (however if this doesn't matter to you - that's cool ;)), however with more direction you can put together something quite nice without breaking the bank.

In terms of painting I have a personal scheme as follows:

Basescoat spray of Chaos Black

Undercoat Runefang Silver

Wash Nuln Oil

Careful highlight armour back up with Runefang silver (seems daft but works well for painting recesses)

Leadbelcher for darker metals (guns, joints etc)

Mephiston Red for trim etc.

Detailing as required.

Ok thanks for the help Sly and Vash, what would you recommend as a standard force I would be guessing something like a Grand Master/Inquisitor/Champion and then a Strike squad? Where would you suggest for information and background on the GK's. I have read a little bit on Lexicanium but wondering if there is any where else to read up on them.

I like the style you have there Vash I will have to try it when I get around to getting a squad or two. Also what are the benefits and draw backs of the 3 styles that you mentioned below Vash?

Personally I enjoy the fluff in the 4th Ed. codex "Daemonhunters", if you can get your hands on it; it's the old rule set but the fiction in it is enjoyable (and forms the foundation for my understanding of GK and the Ordo Malleus). Also, I recommend The Emperor's Gift by A. D-B. It's very fun and an interesting look into the way a GK unit works together.
