mjc
I've played a number of games over the past month using the new rules. During which I have issued as well as accepted a number of challenges regardless of where the character was in the assaulting or assaulted squad. My fear is that I have been doing it wrong. So, in the rule book (page 64) it states that in order for a character to issue or accept a challenge, the character must be engaged with an enemy model. Does this mean the the character issuing the challenge must be in base to base with an enemy model at the start of the fight sub-phase. Conversely, does this mean that a character has to be in base to base with an enemy model to accept? Or am I just misinterpreting the wording? RedemptionNL
Edit: Oops, misread the engaged bit, rephrasing: Engaged means either in base contact, or within 2" of a friendly model in base contact with one or more enemy models in the same combat. So you cannot issue, accept or refuse challenges with characters that are not in base contact or within 2" of a friendly model in base contact in the same combat. dswanick
If you were issuing or accepting challenges with a Character who was not engaged, then yes - you were doing it wrong. What models are ngaged is spelled out in the rulebook, and summarized by RNL above. mjc
Thank you so much for both your responses. This is extremely helpful and we have been doing it within the guidelines of the rules. I can see how this could also be used to help protect characters you don't want in a challenge. worloch
Just remember that you now have a pile in at each models initiative, both yours and your opponents, plus an end of combat pile in. It is very hard to keep models unengaged with these rules, unless you have a huge unit. RedemptionNL
Challenges are made before the pile ins start though, so in the first round of combat it's quite possible to keep a character out of combat.
