Paints on a Plane

Just a quick question:

I'm leaving England for sunny Orlando on Friday for a family trip, and realised that the only way to complete my ETL vow by the 14th is to take my Berzerkers with me.

So I'm just asking for some advice, really: Has anyone here taken paints and/or models abroad? How do you recommend transporting them?

My current plan is to take the eight 'zerkers plus maybe some bitz to make another character if I get bored and... 20+ paints along with brushes (obviously).

Any advice?

Hopefully,

Od.

I brought two boxes of chaos termies back to the states from France a few years back. I kept them in their boxes of course and in my backpack which primarily holds a book, jacket, and a couple noms for the flight. The point being they were cushioned. I'd find a small plastic container that can hold your marines, a small rigid box to hold the paints, and maybe if you're lucky one of the pockets in the case for your marines will be long enough for brushes. Try to get a case with adjustable dividers. Make sure the volume of each paint doesn't exceed the stupid TSA regulations though so they don't take your paints in the states on the way back.

Ah, thanks for the tips there, Zeller!

Just checked the irritating TSA regs and it turns out GW pots are fine, each one is only 12ml compared to the maximum 100ml containers. Reckon I'll bung a couple of paints in my carry on with brushes for during the flight and the rest in the main luggage. Ooh, looks like I can bring sharp hobby stuff if I check it, too! Excellent, maybe I'll take that WIP Rhino as well...

Cheers,

Honestly, I'd just bring a book. I don't expect you'll find much downtime on a trip to sunny Florida this time of year!

Yeah, I ended up leaving everything behind rather than face any potential hassle, so while I failed my third vow I did read Toby Barlow's Sharp Teeth, Neil Gaiman's American Gods (for like the tenth time), The Quickie by James Patterson (terrible crime trash I borrowed from my sister), Kage Baker's The House of the Stag (she's an excellent author, btw) and Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.

I don't think my family quite realised what a bookworm I am until now.

Books > Space Marines

agreed!

however, books with Space marines=WIN!

though i have to say there are better scifi/fantasy books than SM ones too!

not board related:

Peter F Hamilton's nights dawn trilogy or commonwelath saga, robert jordan's wheel of time series (13 books long and still going), frank herbert's dune series and arguably the prequels..... and the game of thrones series are pretty good and might give some ideas for admech/guard/psykers

Just for your, and other's, reference in the future from an individual who travels a TON and refuses to lose time painting: You can take the paints with you on the plane and be safe knowing they'll be fine. I take a GW hardcase with foam paint trays with me everywhere almost. Just put it in the Suitcase and make sure all the lids are on tight. In 5 years I've only ever had a single pot of boltgun metal give me any problems.

As far as models go: Wrap each model in toilet paper or paper towel, and then pack them in some form of hard containter, then make sure they won't jostle about in the suitcase.

The main problem here is that in some legislations (here in Canada, for example) bringing paint in any quantity aboard a plane is illegal. Although the size of the paint bottles might let them get trough inconspicuously, you could also end up with all kinds of problems (be it your luggage being delayed or held hostage until your return, the paints being discarded, or your being fined penalties, etc...).

Why? I guess it has to do with the fact someone classified paint at some point as a 'flamable liquid' and thus was regulated in the same way pretty much all other such liquids were...

As I said, although these little paint pots might be inconspicuous to most (most liquids are authorised in containers of 100mL or less) and might very well not be noticed, if they somehow WERE noticed, for whatever reason, I have no idea just how troublesome it could get...

And no, this is no joke; back in January I had to get rid of some 30+ paint pots when I went on a business trip. Thankfully, the pots were in my carry-on bag and NOT my registered luggage (although had it been in there it might not have been noticed, who knows...). Unfortunately, I was running out of time for my check-in otherwise I'd have courriered it instead :\ (Since mailing paint apparently is illegal too...)

I brought my models home on leave a few times, each time they were searched and there were always some damaged items. I didn't do anything special with the paints, just put them in a ziplock bag and on they went. The searching can be pretty detrimental as they don't really care what the happens to the contents, they just need to search them so they're not very careful with them.
