Hello everyone,

I have just recently gotten into warhammer and I love it. I was led towards this community because I was told it was the most active one and the best on the Internet. I have always been a big fan of board games and I was wondering if anyone could give me a list of the best Warhammer 40k board games, I would like to acquire some.

Thank you

WhiteRa

Well, the two that spring immediately to mind are Space Hulk and Horus Heresy. Space Hulk is a tactical, scenario-driven game with Space Marine Terminators versus Tyranid Genestealers (big gribbly guys with lots of claws) that is currently in its 3rd Edition, while Horus Heresy (in its second edition, I believe) is a strategic-level game featuring Chaos Marines attacking the Emperor's Palace. Both are fun to play but only intended for two players; both are also kind of expensive. I bought HH when it came out, and it was a cool $100.

While not 40K, there's also Chaos in the Old World. This is a Warhammer Fantasy board game intended for 3-5 players (with the expansion) where each player is playing one of the Chaos Gods. It gives a good introduction to Chaos (which has the same names and themes across both 40K and Fantasy) and the spells and abilities of each of the gods in CitOW is also quite educational in terms of how each god operates. And it's tons of fun.

This game was announced recently: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_min...=215&esem=1

It's essentially a 40k-skin applied to Talisman, which I've never played but heard generally positive reviews on it. I'm looking forward to it...but I do expect to be costly.

Also, welcome to the boards.

Well the true fun is in the wargame aspect of 40k I think but boardgames are nice and usually very fluffy to play. There are a lot of older 90's boardgames still available online, check ebay or other auction sites for boardgames that are 40K centric.

Battle for Armageddon, Doom of the Eldar, Space Crusade and Advanced Space Crusade, Ultra Marines, Horus Heresy (which had awesome box art - NOT the FFG version released recently.. the old skool version) any of the EPIC scale games such as Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine (although more wargames proper than boardgames). The olde 2nd Ed Talisman also has a Timescape expansion with Astartes and such as characters.

Good luck on your hunt.

I agree with curnow in selecting Necromunda (not that the others are bad) its free and you can buy those models or just use IG model you or your friend have to represent your warbands (maybe even conversions thats fun).

YOu can also be crazy like my gaming group and come up with a "Deathwatch" type of game which is basically a variant of Space Hulk and Kill Team.

Getting back on topic (and staying within the remit of the B&C)...

I'm going to ignore the range of tabletop wargames and RPGs that Games Workshop has produced or licensed (these include standard WH40K and its expansions, Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, Only War, Battlefleet Gothic and its predecessor Space Fleet, Space Marine, Warhammer Epic 40,000 and it's modernized version Epic Armageddon, Adeptus Titanicus and Titan Legions, Inquisitor, Aeronautica Imperialis, Tyranid Attack, Space Crusade, and Gorkamorka - and Necromunda, which isn't "power armour" and not allowed for discussion here at the B&C)

Note that all of the links in this post take you to the game entries found at the Board Game Geek. If you follow the links you'll find even more information on each game, pictures, discussions, etc. (highly recommended). Games that are still in production link to their official sites (e.g., BFG takes you to the Specialist Games page whereas Deathwatch takes you to the FFG page).

Lost Patrol

This was a nifty little game that GW produced featuring a small team of scouts versus lurking creatures in an ever-changing jungle environment. It's very difficult to find these days, but you might find homegrown renditions over at the BGG (simply look for "Patrol Lost" for a generic set of remarkably similar, though un-themed, rules).

Battle for Armageddon

This was a chit and hex wargame similar to many old Avalon Hill classics (the ones I grew up on) and set during Ghazghkull Thraka's first invasion of Armageddon.

Space Hulk

The classic game has gone through three edition (this takes you to the 1st edition, but you can also see the 2nd and 3rd editions). The Zone Mortalis rules that Forge World is working on may serve as an accessible way to adapt the concepts from Space Hulk into your "standard" Warhammer 40,000 gaming.

Doom of the Eldar

This was another Games Workshop application of the chit and hex style of wargaming that Avalon Hill popularized, this time pitting the Eldar craftworld of Iyanden against a Tyranid hive fleet.

Death Angel

This is a card-based rendition of the Space Hulk setting, produced by Fantasy Flight Games.

Horus Heresy

This game is a lite wargame similar to Risk or Fortress America, set during Horus' assault on Holy Terra. The current version is produced by Fantasy Flight Games.

Relic

This is the science-fantasy version of the famous Talisman game, newly produced by Fantasy Flight Games.

Hopefully that is a close-to-complete "catalog" of the various boardgames (and other games) set in the Warhammer 40,000 game universe.

Note that I'm moving this discussion over to the Other Games forum since it is specifically about the various board games of the game universe.

damnit, and here I was thinking I had most of the boardgames... bastards are bringing out a 40k Talisman? and there's an expantion to Chaos in the old world??? poor wallet :D

btw: Talisman is a great game, but don't believe anything about what they claim is the average playtime. last 5 games we had, we played around 16 hours. (only taking a break to move to the other table and have some greasy powerfood)

consider yourself warned.
