I'll die before painting my Space Wolves

This is a cry for help.

*Dramatic pause*

For about 1.5 years I try to paint my Space Wolves. Which leads to me figuring out a color scheme for 5 days, then giving up and painting something else. This is a Space Wolves only problem for me, but I can't seem to overcome it. The first version is grey blueish with Thunderhawk Blue as main color. The other one is a mix of Eshin Grey and a darker Vallejo Color. I think I like the dark scheme more. But I really like the blue scheme and things like battle damage and blending looks better on a color I think. What do you think?

For the top coat of the Darker one .. Have you thought about using - The top coat your using now : 2 parts - 1 part : The blue your using for the other.

Or possibly a blue glaze over top the grey/black

I do like the darker colours on your wolves but that could just be that the highlights on it are more clearly defined giving the model more depth. In saying that, i do not like what it looks like on that boltgun hunter.

They're all a little different. I like the ones in the first row of the first picture most. Yes I tried before what you suggested and somehow it didn't look space-wolfy for me. More like a Chaos Space Marine color. I don't know why though, it might have reminded me of the Alpha Legion.

What I like about the blue one is that thanks to the airbrush it has really got lighting. It goes from Thunderhawk to dark reaper to black in the shadow areas, while the grey one only goes from dark to darker ;-). I can't really photograph this effect with dark colors, because without a lightbox the painted shadows and the real shadows are indistinguishable :-/. That being said.. I still think I like the dark one more and my Dark Angels and Grey Knights still leave enough room for lighting shenanigans.

Thanks for you reply

When I first started collecting my wolves I painted them in the powder/ice blue motif as per the codex, but to me it always looked...wrong....Recently when I decided to start working on them again I went through several test minis before deciding that the darker grey is just...well....meaner. So my opinion is that you go with the darker. To me it just screams "Wolves that stalk the stars".....

This is down to just opinions here, and opinions are like rectums (everyone has one), but I like your "blue-grey" models. The two on the left in the first picture, for example, look much better than the darker ones.

Yeah same here, it looks more hunterish I think.

You're right about that, but opinions still help to consider things. Otherwise we wouldn't need to discuss anything at all. A none-oppinion thing is, that I think you can work better with blood effects on brighter models. Or isn't that true?

I Like to play with the following website when I needs ideas for color variation. I think whats throwing you off is the red and yellow combine. Try a black shoulder Pad with red shoulder Pad... then black shoulder Pad with yellow shoulder Pad... In all cases that you take the blue or grey armor your color will fit more in with each other.

Chill, bro. You're not gonna die. You really like Wolves, you'll have them painted in no time! ^_^

If you want my opinion, I like the darker gray one. To be honest, not a fan of blue-ish space wolves, even thought that's the standard norm. Me, I stick to the 13th company gray with the yellow and red and white pack markings and company markings of post-heresy wolves. So that could be my bias

Thanks for the tool. I tried a complementary color, but it looks to calm in my oppinion. At least in this scheme. I would use a black shoulder pad on the blue ones, but I think the grey is too dark on the table without a bright color. I didn't find anything better than yellow so far. Green is complementary, but I don't like it on Space Wolves, white is back insignia is a little too extreme. Blue/ torquise fits, but is too calm. I'm open for any suggestion :)

Hehe thanks. I still hope I won't die ;-). I didn't like the blue ones at first but it got better the more I looked at it ;-). But I think I'll go with the grey ones now.

you could ofc use both scemes, to diferenciate between claws and hunters?

Yes I thought the same, but I haven't got claws. I might take blue or black for the wolf guard though. I think I'll paint a full grey squad now and then see how it looks :-)

For you the darker scheme maybe a shade or two lighter though with Red and Yellow. Look wise like your painting style is more complementary to the darker colors.

It seems like you already made up your mind you just needed some validation for your choice. So now you have it go forth and paint paint paint.

Don't think about it anymore, just paint paint paint.

Vrox.

Space Wolf packs are also all different. You could use both color schemes in one army if you wanted to. I decided to do my army as a siege army. Different lords lending different units to the cause. My packs have different varying shades of darker to lighter grey...as do their vehicles. This also lends to the fact that the lords and packs are all slightly different. And that the packs come from different time periods in the history of the Space Wolves. Some units may be 200, 100, 70 years old...while others are only 20 to 30 years..or even newly formed.

In other words..its your army..do what you like. I cant wait to see it. I need to get my pics up as well.

The last bit is the most important one. I've started to think too much and now I can't get out of it. Yes I'll just paint my "allies" section of my Space Wolves now dark and see how it looks. Thanks for the help.

Yeah what Vrox said :cuss

He's a genius ;D

I think the one thing which keeps me from doing that is, I don't want to loose my flexibility model-wise. If I need another Plasma Gunner and the only ones I've left are black, but I need them for a blue squad. But I'm doing way to many "if"'s and "maybe"'s. I just need to start ;).

You could also compromise... paint you line troops (Hunters) in the blue scheme and do TDA, Runic, and characters, priests, etc in the darker gray scheme. Their armor would likely have been kicking around longer and would tend towards more of a prehersey scheme.

On a side note, neither one looks bad at all to me, but never mind the bloodclaw. Do what you like more.
