Kozemp
I just finished Mechanicum - does Tales of Heresy have important plot/character information that I need to read? (And, similarly, the other compilations when I get to them). Simple enough question, I suppose... Iron Father Ferrum
Some of the short stories contribute quite heavily to the lore of the Heresy, but it's not exactly true for each of the entire books. Tales of Heresy, for instance, has the entertaining Blood Games about Custodes and their training -- interesting, but not involved in the overall metaplot of the Heresy. It also has The Last Church, which is an awesome story with great insights into the nature of the Unification and the Great Crusade, and After De'shea, which is our first serious look into the minds of Khârn and Angron and speaks volumes about the changes that the World Eaters underwent. I'm a purist and a touch OCD, so I need the complete set (can't find a reasonably cheap copy of Promethean Sun on eBay!!!!) so I get them all anyway, but I guess it comes down to personal preference. Kierdale
I have to agree with Deus. None of them are essential, but they do give some very interesting glimpses into background and other low-key events. A few Chapters which haven't been featured in the larger novels get a bit of page-time too. The Last Church and The Last Remembrancer(?) are two of my favorites from the compilations which are not particularly astartes-focused. Inquisitor Engel
I went the audiobook route for Age of Darkness and enjoyed it immensely. nuclearship
Isn't it always nice to have all books or at least all of a series? You could also say you don't have to read books like Battle of the Abyss or Descent of Angels, as they contribute even less than some of the short stories. In the end I for myself enjoy every single bit I can get of the Heresy and I'm still not happy about the fact that the whole Garro story only continues in MP3 as I prefer books over everything. But hell, we see with Shadows of Treachery that all audiobooks eventually come out as written books, so we just have to wait then <_< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259022-novellashort-story-compilations-necessary-reading/#findComment-3151362 Share on other sites
Artein
Probably limited edition novellas will also come out as written books in some kind of anthology, seeing how The Bloody Handed is going to be reprinted in The Sundering. December 2010 as a limited edition, October 2012 as a novella in an omnibus. Less than 2 years. We may see The Aurelian and Promethean Sun somewhere next year, second half probably.
