campbell84
Hi all, Definitely in need of an airbrush and compressor and have found plenty of information about what kind to get (double-action for the control, gravity fed for the detail work etc...) BUT haven't come across any actual suggestions. Most of it's use will be for base-coating so I'm not needing professional level equipment here but just something reliable and more versatile than the Citadel Flamer option. What I really want to know is whether this (budget option) is worth the cash: KMS Airbrush Kit AS186 AS 186 with Compressor with Tank with 2 x Double Action Airbrushes and Hose Or should I bite the bullet and get something like this: AB-AS-186 Airbrushing Kit With Iwata Eclipse CS Airbrush (I've heard good things about the Iwata CS) Cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259067-airbrush-compressor-suggestions/ Share on other sites
Brother_Angelus
Theres nothing stopping you buying the first option and getting an Iwata later if you feel the brushes supplied aren't good enough. I bought the very same set (KMS one) several months back, and haven't so much as taken it out of the box! Infact, if you want to save a few quid, i'd consider passing it on. Isador Sotho
Hi campbell84, in my opinion it's better to bite the bullet and get some decent airbrush. My airbrush is mostly used for base-coating as well and therefore I really like to let you know how pleased I am with this components: Iwata Neo CN Sparmax TC-610H First of all, I went to a local store and tested several airbrushes from all price ranges and have to say that the Neo felt almost exactly like the more expensive Iwatas but for a price of 50 GBP  What's really great about the Neo CN is how easy it can be cleaned. It's also a good idea to have a real look at the compressor to get the chance of actually hearing how loud it is. I did some serious research before buying my stuff and by now I can say that I don't regret my choices after all. It's so much fun working with a good tool :) As I'm located in Germany I can't tell you how much it is in UK, but I paid 300€ for a whole set including airbrush, compressor, hose, quick connector, cleaning pot and airbrush holder. This was a few days after the release of the Neo so I guess you might save a few bucks now. 37cee
Buy a decent Airbrush and a solid Compressor. When i bought my airbrush i went to a decent hobby store where i could actually try different airbrushes, if there is any possibilty i would recommend doing that. Regarding the quality i can recommend iwata (never tried those but i heared good things), badger (renegade series) and harder & steenbeck (evolution series / colani) (the h&s might be harder to come by on the us market). Your second choice seem solid, getting a cheap airbrush or compressor is something you will regret after a short time. looking at amazon: thats 100-150 for the airbrush (with a single nozzle/needle) plus 100+ $ for a compressor (with airtank), you might consider getting a better one here (175$ up) all those cheaper one seem to be some chinese one sold under differnet names, if there is a problem, the service might be more complicated. Consider getting different combinations for your airbursh (needle / nozzle) for detail and priming/base coat etc. (0.2-0.4, smaller nozzels might not work with the usual gaming colors even if thinned properly) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259067-airbrush-compressor-suggestions/#findComment-3150481 Share on other sites
Papa Lazarou
Hi Campbell Got your pm. I got mine for exactly the same reasons as you do, mainly basecoating. For that it does the job great, I've had no problems with it whatsoever, the compressor is stable and quiet, the airbrushes work well. I would personally go for it, makes priming and basecoating a breeze, all I would suggest is get some Medea cleaning fluid and some cleaning brushes for it and try and get it to the habit of cleaning it thouroughly at the end of use. To me it's better to start on something like this and make sure you actually like the use and feel of an airbrush on your minis before you part with serious money on a decent airbrush, you can always get a upgrade to a better airbrush and still have the compressor. Go for it and you won't look back after you start to get the hang of it. Shout if you have anymore question about the kms one. PS If you get it of amazon like i did, KMS Distributions were very good, delivered in a couple of days.
