Iron Warriors Siege Scouts

Recommended Posts

Inspired by all the rumours flying around at the moment about the (probably) forthcoming Chaos releases I felt the need to paint a Traitor Marine. I decided to set myself a challenge in doing this though. I would construct the Marine only from what was in my bits box rather than buying anything new for a one off mini. After a couple of hours trawling, test fitting, blu-tacking, slightly raising that arm, lowering that one and turning the head more this way, along with jabbing my finger tips on sharp bits way too many times (why I didn't just leave them out of the box til I was done I don't know!) I came up with this:

Soon as I get a break in the rain this afternoon I'm gonna get him undercoated and hopefully I'll get some work done on him tomorrow.

As usual, comments and criticism are welcome, although I know there's not much to do either on just now ;)

cheers

Got a break in the rain so he's now undercoated all that's needed now is a quick lick of watered down Chaos Black and he'll be ready for painting...

@ Biohazard: thanks mate, I'm thinking Iron Warriors for Legion, I've painted a pre-heresy loyalist son of Peturabo before so I want to try my hand at a post heresy traitor now... mainly because I want to cover the plating on the chainaxe with hazed stripes <_<.

@ jimbothemagnificent: thanks ;) you wouldn't believe how much agonising went into the positioning of the arms, head and the mini on the base... I just can't pose a mini in an implausible way. The pose has to look natural, achieveable and match the 'mood' of the mini. If my mini's don't look 'just so' to me then I put them down and leave them until I can make them 'just so' or I give up and move on to something else .

cheers

Quick update, a couple of hours painting done this afternoon with a couple more on the cards later on, most of the basic colours are now in place (aside from the cabling and soft armour, that's still to be done...) so here's how he looks just now:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8434/7808430260_67ee664725.jpghttp://farm9.staticflickr.com/8447/7808565018_506abf73d1.jpg

I've gone for quite a dark gunmetal silver for the armour plate. I've seen some very striking bright silver Iron Warriors around but I wanted to try to give the impression that although the armour is reasonably well maintained (it's not really dirty) it's not seen lapping powder in quite some time. In contrast, the chainmail is quite rusted (although this pic doesn't really show it properly) as though it's been there for some time, hasn't been maintained and in all probability has been forgotten about.

I was also thinking while I was painting that the 'camera' on his helmet could be a killcam for after battle enjoyment, or and this is my preference, prior to the heresy this marine was a 'Siege Scout' employed along with others of his kind by the IW during the Great Crusade/Heresy. Siege Scouts were a semi-disposable asset used to determine the best avenues for attack. They were equipped with high resolution pict recorders to better allow their commanders to assess their intel. This served a dual purpose in that if the Siege Scout was killed prior to returning to the IW lines, his intel would not have been lost as the cessation of his heartbeats would trigger a secured micro-burst transmission of all the data within the pict recorder to a dedicated intel/assess cogitator.

or something like that anyway

cheers

Great fluff, I actually really like it. And of course the painting is a nice start. Sorta weird to see something gritty from you, even then I can see the clean undertones that are classic Pig. It kills you to paint something dirty doesn't it? :tu:

Ha ha... if i could paint realistic looking dirty, gritty mini's well then I'd be painting them all the time  where i struggle with dirt and grime is not going too far and achieving believable realistic grime and dirt and that doesn't look painted on if you know what I mean... I've experimented a little with using glazes to dirty things up a bit and I plan to get some weathering powders at some point too, until then though you're stuck with 'classic pig' :HQ:

I've not been feeling the best for the last few days, however I have managed to get a little work done on this son of Peturabo:

Not much left to finish up really, I'm quite happy with how the chevrons on his shoulder and the hazard stripes on his axe came out, although a couple stillneed a little tidying up. I'm thinking a little bit of chipping to the cutting edge of the axe might work quite well, just to give it less of a 'fresh from the forge' look. The red tank on his back pack needs a subtle highlight too. The grip on the chain axe needs some work still and obviously the base needs done too.

@ Battle-Brother Ludovic & Midnight Runner: Thanks guys, hopefully you still like the look of him :cuss.

@ Biohazard: I'll mind an put the Siege Scout fluff in his HoH entry cause the more I think about it the more I like it too :).

cheers

I think if you darkened the brass parts and lightened the yellow stripes, it would look better, as you can hardly see the yellow in the pics with all the brass.

Just my two pence. Otherwise, I like him a lot :cuss

It's really nicely done so far, but I think it could do with a little personalization when you work on him next.. He seems a little too pristine, even with the rust. Little marks on his pistol or armour to tally kills (for ego, instead of the camera's count) wouldn't be out of place..

Also, don't you think he looks a little lonely?

Thanks for the comments guys. As Ludovic suggested I'm gonna dampen down the brightness of the brass a little and bring the yellow up a touch to compensate. Also, thanks for the suggestion NemFX, i had a feeling that he was looking a little plain so some personification along with a grand coI'mpany number will be added to him. As for him looking a little lonely, if I hadn't already made plans to paint a Word Bearers army based on the contents of the Dark Vengeance box then he would almost defiantly be getting some company. That said I think i can give him four brothers from the same legion... (rubs hands together and starts plotting)

cheers

Double post but thought I'd throw up some photos of a couple of hours worth of painting today:

Still in the early stages of painting I thought I'd give the Siege Scout some squad mates. Still trying to work out the fluff for the squad but I figured it wouldn't do any harm having a small contingent of seige specialists operating alongside my Word Bearers host. Perhaps the oratory of the Dark Apostle has re-kindled the smouldering embers of hatred within the embittered hearts of these sons of Peturabo...

Cheers

Stunning work as always Pig, the converted RT era backpack is a nice touch. Love the tones of the yellow - not too bright so it doesn't glare out against the dark metal of the armour.

The idea behind Siege Scouts makes me think of the Forlorn Hope - A kind of suicide unit used by armies when a breach was made in a fortress's walls. The attackers would surge forward under heavy fire from the defenders guns in order to establish a foothold within the defences - many would not make it. They were usualy led by a young officer like an Ensign or Lieutenant eager for promotion which would be his likely reward for leading his foolhardy charge. Often the promotion was awarded posthumously.

Well, I think I'm sick of painting hazard stripes for the time being but I think they've come out pretty well:

Few bits and pieces left to do painting wise then I'm going to do all the decals for the squad at the same time. I need to sort bases out for these four mini's too which I'm aiming to get done this evening.

@ Brother Khairon: Thanks ;).

@ Lestat: Good to see you mate :) I was wondering if anyone would notice the modified back pack on the scout. I'm not the biggest fan of Traitor Astartes having 'wings' on their back packs, sometimes it works really well and I know that it's supposedly due to the different type of reactor fuel/core that the Traitors have to use or something like that but aesthetically I just don't always find it pleasing.

Back on topic. I think you and I might have had the same thought as I've armed the squad with combi-flamers for close in neutralisation of fortifications. I'd forgotten about the actual use of the Forlorn Hope though . Perhaps these Iron Warriors have been recruited by their Word Bearer bretheren for just such a purpose?

cheers

Hi Pig, been kurking a bit and not posted much recently as I've been doing a lot of historicals and researching early Imperial Rome for my Legio II Augusta. Once I've got a chunk of those cracked, it'll be back to my IF's.

With all those combi-flamers, I guess you'll be running them as sternguard. If so, my preference would be for combi-meltas as sternguard have the special ammo - one of which (can't remember what it's called at the moment) acts like a flamer and ignores cover. But then, thats just how I would do the squad.

Mmmmm............... now you've got me thinking. A visit to my bitz box is called for.

Anyway, back on topic, the hazard markings are looking very neat. Are you going to carry them on to the right pauldron too? Or go one step further and do chevrons :)

I hadn't really given much thought as to what to actually run the squad as. Depending on what the new Chaos 'dex has in it I might try for veterans. If veterans are in there and if they can take combi-weapons (both of which I hope they will) then I'd run them as either flamer or melta depending on the probable opponent, points cost, etc. If the 'dex doesn't have the option for combi weapons then I'll run them as vanilla boltguns. How this'll fit into my overall army plan (such as it is) I'm not sure once things start to arrive I'll have 40 Cultists, 10 Chosen, 2 Hell Brutes, 2 Lords in Power Armour, 1 Lord in Terminator Armour and these 5 Iron Warriors.

That leaves me somewhat HQ and Elite heavy and very lacking in anti armour fire power and Troops that might actually 1) hit the side of a barn door and 2) be able to hold up anything more than a troop of Brownies. I know that large mobs of cheap, disposable infantry make excellent speed bumps but I would like to try and get some more ceramite on the table just in case. All that said, I'm re-reading Dark Apostle at the moment and utilising masses of Cultists and a much lower number of actual Traitor Astartes is seems like it would be much more fluffy... meh, I'll look to address issues like that once I've gotten this sizeable chunk of stuff sorted.

I do have loose plans to add some tanks (using some of Subtle Discord's very tasty Armour Trim Kits) probably at least one Land Raider, possibly a couple of Predators since I've not painted them before and probably a couple of Rhino/Razorbacks too. I'm also currently trying to work out whether to paint strip my Baneblade and paint it as either a Word Bearers or Iron Warriors Super Heavy and I have a Crassus Armoured Transport that I bought from Forge World last year which is sitting unassembled in it's box that I started thinking today might be a good way of lugging some of my bullet catching cultists around. As I said most of this though is just me spit-balling. I'm not going to commit to anything properly until the new 'dex appears.

Back on the topic of these mini's, I was really, really hoping no one would throw down the gauntlet of hazard stripes/chevrons on the pauldrons as doing either will be tricky (although probably easier than doing the ones on the bolters) but now it's been put out there I'm gonna give it a try. So the plan is now to add which ever yellow stripes are the least hassle and then put the Iron Warriors legion decal over the top.

ah, time to ingest more Iyanden Darksun... why does the pigment have to taste so bad?

Tamiya do a masking tape in various widths which may come in handy for those chevrons.

Iron Warriors always seemed the least Chaos-like of the traitor Marines. I've considered doing a force using the SM codex, but with the advent of cultists/cannon fodder, I may be tempted to do a less spiky force.

Just remember, you are not supposed to eat the paint :D
