Hey all,

Gonna use this thread to keep track of my progress on my version of Bran Redmaw's Great Company.

First up, Bran Redmaw himself (WIP)

Only basecoated, hoping to get him painted this weekend and pics posted of him completed soon.

C and C always welcome :(

~BtW

I like him, especially the pose. What are you going to do with him to make him become more Lord like? Even though he probably rips his armour when he gets into his Redmaw form, I always visualise that rune armour is bit more blinged, apart from the runes. I would suggest that you should give him the shoulders with parrying guards or the shoulder with the pelt, and maybe giving him something to represent the belt of russ, maybe some of those tails or wolf heads that are on the pack sprue. But these ideas you might already have considered.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

I have the wolf-headed backpack primed and ready to go as well as a Belt of Russ, the holstered bolt pistol and one of the Wolftooth necklaces from the Thunderwolves set.

I kept them off to start with as its easier to paint some of the other details on him (like the fur) with them not being in the way.

I like the conversion.. Shame the primer mucked it up.

Oh god!

I just realized that the images were 40% shrunken. Now I noticed the fuzz when I zoomed in.

Yeah, you really fuzzed up the primer. Have you used any green stuff or epoxy? If you can strip it without damaging the modelling job, you should do it now. One day in a cup of pure simple green, and the primer will melt right off and you can reprime it no prob. Or else your paintjob will be affected, and that would be a shame.

For future reference, tho, I always find that you should prime, spray paint, airbrush, and varnish when the temperature is not too cold and not too warm, so around 78 to 83 is ideal for me, and never spray anything when humidity is above 50%.

The paint mist will either dry before hitting the mini, causing the fuzz, or the water vapor interferes with it, causing either fuzz or a really ugly waxy sheen.

Yeah, crappy weather here is playing havoc on my primers, in combination with the fact that our temps in summertime never drop below 98-99f even at night....usually in the 120's during the daytime here for summer. Serious suckage, but I've learned a few tricks to clean them up pretty well......

Should have him painted and pics up by Monday. Then its figuring out what to do with the base....Thinking granite with snow and icicles.....Have yet to do icicles. They look like they'd be fun...

wow the fur on those wolves is amazing, my i ask how you did it? perhaps a tutorial? i'm terrible at painting fur and need all the help i can get!

as for Wulfen Redmaw i think it looks pretty damn good, much better than anything i could come up with, if i may ask what model is it based upon?

Thanks!

The wulfen Redmaw is based off of the Reaper Jean-Paul duChamps model. I used the pewter one but they have a plastic/resin one in their Bones line. Only problem I have with it is that it is too small per the fluff description of him in that form, so this will be a temporary stand in until I get a larger model for him.

Seriously, the fur was amazingly easy. I tried a new technique on them and love how it turned out. I'll post here how I did it and next month when I get another box I'll try and do a true tutorial on them with pics.

Step 1: After priming them, basecoat the whole model with Bleached Bone/Ushtabi Bone. Let dry a good 30 mins+

Step 2: Starting at the nose of the model coat the body fur (make sure you get the face area of the model under the eyes and on the cheeks), leaving about a millimeter edge, with Gryphonne Sepia wash. (Not sure what the new colour is called as I don't have it yet but will be picking some up to try it) Let dry til it no longer has the "wet" look.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2.

Step 4: Again starting at the nose, and leaving a edge (how much is up to you 1/2cm is close to what I left) of the fur with the Gryphonne Sepia showing, apply a coat of Ogryn Flesh wash. Let dry till it no longer has that "wet" look".

Step 5: Repeat Step 4.

Step 6: Again starting at the nose, and leaving an edge of the fur with the first 2 washes, apply a coat of Devlan Mud wash in the same manner you did the other two washes. Let dry til it no longer looks "wet".

Step 7: Repeat Step 6.

Step 8: Again starting at the nose, and again leaving an edge of the other colours showing, apply a coat of Badab Black wash as you did previously. Let dry til it no longer looks "wet".

Step 9: Repeat Step 8.

Step 10: Paint the nose black, and pick out the teeth with white, and finish any other details on the model

And you are done!

This technique also works well when painting fur bits on armour and other things like Wolf tail talismans.

Good luck and hope this helps!

Full Disclosure: I originally saw this technique used on fur armour in a tutorial over on this Space Wolves blog : HERE

thanks that is helpful, i shall save that tut and if you make one specifically for the wolves i shall commend you even further! when you do get around to it i'm sure it will be a great addition to the Librarium here too so cheers!

Thanks -V-!

Just need to figure out how I want to (and can) do the Power Axes on them. I have an idea in mind but not sure I can pull it off, but I gotta say I have been very lucky lately in my painting, lol. (That or I'm improving, God forbid) So I'll see what I can come with. Wish me luck

Some new pics of a few of my Grey Hunters that I am working on...

They still need a few touch ups on the white shoulder pads and knee pads, the bases need some snow, and I need to drill out the gun barrels ( my pin vice bit broke an I need to get a new one asap. I usually drill them before painting)

Group shot:

Had trouble with this guys face, thinking it looks pretty aged and almost leathery, but needs to be darker...Gonna mess with it and see....

As usual C and C are welcome! ;)

Finally magnetized and repainted my FW SW venerable dred. Still need to order the FW brass to add a few more accents to him, and then in a month or two when temps drop I can clear coat him.

His banner is the first time I have done a freehand that I am happy with. It's not perfect but it works. Same with the edge highlights. I always fight with them because of the nerve damage in my hands, but I am getting somewhat better at it, at least in my opinion. I also need to cut a piece of guitar string to make a cable that goes from the flamer to the upper left arm of the dred. Hope you enjoy it.

Without further ado...

So.......What do you all think?

~BtW

I'd recommend giving a slight "mascara" to the bare-headed Long fangs. If you can do this, it'll keep the eyes from blending into the face. Don't make it too thick, or you'll have the drag queen effect

I'll give it a go....Not sure if it's the camera but they seem to wash out and not pop as much in the pics as they do in person, but I'll certainly try it.

@TG thanks.... I have also started going back and highlighting my WB's as well, now that my confidence is growing with it. As I said before, its an uphill battle with this stupid nerve damage but I am not gonna give up!

Yeah confidence is a big, especially when going back over old models. I had problems with that too at first when I started to get highlighting down but its getting better.

Waiiit!

Don't touch the bionic eye longfang and the golden hair boy. Those guys have good eyes!

... Sorry lol

Ok....hadn't gone near them yet lol.....

The guy with the white stripe does look better in person than in the pic. His left eye is done as a milky white, with the scar line following from the cheek up through the eye and into the scalp. I'll take a look at doing the thin highlight around their eyes though. The other guy was a real pain in the butt. The flesh tones didn't want to cooperate at all, and the eyes, while looking better in person as well, I'm still not 100% happy with it. I'd say I am maybe 75% happy with it.

I have a full 10 of the Grey Hunters, including the four above, that I need to take pics of and post tomorrow. All I'm needing is some work on or changing of bases, which I should be ordering in the next week, including 2 mark of the wulfen guys that I am torn between the puppetswar heads or the maxmini ones....Puppetswar I'd have to wait on to get them shipped across the pond....maxmini I think I can get from a supplier here in the states. Just not sure which are better...Do any of you have any experience with either of them? I also have another ten together that I am needing to paint and/or repaint, the second MotW goes with them, that I will probably be doing 2 or 3 at a time.

Anyhow I'll get some pics of them all asap.

Some more pics of my Bran Redmaw, Rune Priest and a Grey Hunter Pack . Still WiP's as the bases need to be finished (add snow and swap bases on some) and some touchups still need to be made.
