A question on help with my chapter fluff

Ok so I've been (slowly) working on creating my own chapter. Eventually I plan on getting a full chapters worth of models. As of right now I am able to make a company. I did a quick search and found a couple examples of tattoos on models but nothing quite like to the extent I'm looking for. The Iron Hands obviously take body modification to the extreme by chopping off whole limbs at a time.

Anyways, in thinking of all my background and fluff and whatnot, I obviously wanted to make them unique in some way. One way which struck me at work earlier was "Hey....what if they were tattooed?!" in such a way that each tattoo told a story of their life and accomplishments. Obviously this wouldn't work well for table top, I was thinking more for just fluff and other things such as the Deathwatch RPG.

My question is really, CAN space marines get tattoos? Would their accelerated healing nullify tattooing methods? Are there any official examples such a kind of body modification and how would it be perceived with the rest of the Imperium?

Either way I think I'm going to throw it into my own fluff I'm just curious how the rest of you feel.

I reckon normal tattoos would work, I'm sure that electoos would, and in the Ultramarines series one of them practices scarification. How it would be perceived, depends on who is perceiving, the upper echelons may look down on it but I can't see a socialite berating a giant super-soldier because he looks like a ruffian.
Salamanders do extensive scarification, and have to earn the right to do it to your head. Typically getting into 1st Company, or attaining command rank. And while they ARE special forces warrior monk knights, with all that chanting and what not, they are also still WARRIOR cults, and tattoos, scarification, funny-looking hair cuts, etc. are important in a lot of warrior traditions. In fact, you know why short hair, and in general the 'clean cut' look is such an issue in the modern world? Cutting your hair is a sign on obeisance, and marking your body shows pride...
