Strike Force Baptiste (Mortifactors)

They look really good. Cant wait to see them done up. Also 8 extra bolter shots a turn isnt bad, can help with finishing off that cultist unit or adding a few extra wounds to those deepstriking termies (esp if thats rapid fire).

I second the request for an army shot.

A couple of weeks ago I saw the Land Raider Proteus in action and ever since I've become obsessed with the Armored Proteus model and its 6th edition rules. Very few venues permit Forge World rules, even those stamped 40K approved, but in Seattle area this is changing.  Worst comes to worst, I can use it as a 'counts-as' model for a standard Land Raider.

The plan is to use the Proteus as a transport for my Death Watch (Sternguard).  The Proteus' Scout rule permits it to outflank.  When it arrives, the Proteus blasts away at enemy side armor with 2 lascannons and a multi-melta. If needed, the Sternguard disembark and tackle a second unit, either in anti-armor mode or anti-infantry mode. Its Ceramite Armor increases its survivability by protecting it from the bane of the Land Raider, the ubiquitous melta gun. Overall, the Proteus gives my Mortifactors list a bit more mobility and some much needed tactical flexibility.

I shuffled around some points and came up with a Proteus list that I like.  In the new list the Techpriest (Acolyte) in my Henchman Warband is no longer armed with a plasma gun.  It's a shame because my Techpriest is one of my favorite models in my army. Below is his replacement.

I used a Dark Vengeance Cultist Champion as the base for the conversion.  The arms come from Victoria Miniatures.  The rest of the bits are odds and ends from a variety of kits.

I don't like this conversion as much as my Techpriest with plasma gun conversion. However, not all venues or players will permit me to use the Proteus, so my Techpriest with plasma gun won't be permanently retired.  Nor will the Death Watch Rhino I spent all that time painting.

Some nice looking conversions you have there. The Cultist/Tech-priest still looks more "cutlist" to me, but I love how the Tech-Priest above him is coming along.

As for the Proteus: I plan to build one of my own - but based on the plastic Land Raider kit (adding the front plate from the Achilles, the top hull from the Prometheus and th engines from the Mk.II) and I'm glad it is working out for you.

The third photo IS the Dark Vengeance Cultist Champion. I lifted the image from GW's website. I included it in my post to show everyone and example of the model that I started with. The first two images are my work -WIP photos of my new Techpriest.

I haven't been in much of a painting mood lately, so I've been tinkering around with models instead.  My Proteus list leaves me with an extra 4 points, so I've assembled a new Henchman to add to my second Henchmen Warband.  It's another super simple conversion. The base model is a Bretonnian Battle Pilgrim.  I used the SM Scout chainsword because it is smaller than the standard version, and thus better matches the scale of a "human-sized" model. The pistol comes from a cultist model from the Dark Vengeance kit.

I've also been fiddling with my new Techpriest's backpack.  The ball joint on the servo-arm doesn't look as good as I had hoped it would. I need to replace it. The robotic gripper comes from the Micro Arts HTTP-05 kits that I used to make my Herakli.  Since I replaced the HTTP-05's hands with Grey Knight hands, I have 10 of these robotic grippers in my bits box.

After seeing the Mechanicus elements in my army, my friend decided to add some Mechanicus models to his own.  His IG army includes a small contingent of Dark Angels allies which are now Mechanicus (counts-as DA).  His plan is to use the IG Enginseer model as a Techpriest (counts-as DA Librarian).  To represent the model's various Divination powers he wanted to equip the model with an auspex.  The servo-arm would serve as the model's force weapon.  The model also needed a bolt pistol.  And since modeling isn't my friend's forte, I offered to do the conversion for him.

For those unfamiliar with the IG Enginseer model, this is what it looks like:

As I suspected, a simple hand swap would not have worked. Because the model was designed to have a two handed grip on a poleaxe, the arms were too close to the body.

Fixing the left arm didn't require too much work.  First, I cut the cables where they were attached to the left glove.  Then I used pliers to bend the arm back.  I had to carve out the armpit and inner arm a bit to get the shape I wanted.  After pinning and gluing the pistol and hand into place, I bent the cables back to the arm and patched everything up with greenstuff.

Repositioning right arm was a pain in the @#$%.  It's entire length was connected to the right side of the model's chest, so I had to first cut it away with snips and then reshape the armpit, chest, belt with a hobby knife.  Carving white metal with a xacto blade is quite a chore.  I used two short lengths of white metal cabling and a square plastic pouch to cover up the area that I reshaped.

To make the right arm, I pinned a plastic Orlock ganger arm to a plastic ghoul's hand.  I clipped the ghoul's nails, added the auspex, and then pinned the arm assembly in place. I used greenstuff to sculpt a shirt sleeve and a glove to match the glove on the model's left arm.

The original position of the servo-arm got in the way of the model's upraised left hand, so I cut off the servo-arm's shoulder joint and upper arm.  I turned the servo-arm 90 degrees and attached it to the backpack by the elbow joint.

Voila!

For comething that was "cobbled together" out of leftovers, I think you did an excellent job and I still love the platform you have made for it (and your quad-gun) too!

Bannus, Games Workshop can learn a thing or two from him, he cobbled together a better model than they ever did. :D (looks at centurions and stormraven gunship)

I second your comment as well.

This is all lovely. Your use of red on the Mortifactors has given me some ideas, so thanks for that.

Also really enjoyed the Battle Report. If you do anymore my only suggestion would be to differentiate the armies more clearly, at least if its going to be between armies with a lot of unpainted figures. Bar that it was great.

Keep it up.

I finally managed to finish painting the last two members of my Henchman Warband Psykers. Now their Psychic Barrage is S10 AP1. Bwah ha ha! http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New/EvilLaugh.gif

I'm thinking about giving a Scout squad and a Land Speeder Storm a go. The new rules for the Cerberus Launcher are pretty sweet and the Heavy Flamer upgrade is free. Burn xenos scum!

The heads are chem mask heads made by Victoria Miniatures.

The Land Speeder Storm kit is sooo much fun. It has tons of little details and lots of extra bits.

I don't like the look of the model's forward stabilizers (i.e. little wings), so I replaced them with steps that I cut from an extra Rhino door. You may not have noticed this while assembling your Rhinos, but a portion of a Rhino door that faces inward has a textured surface that matches the textured surface on the rear steps of the Storm kit. Near perfect match.

My biggest complaint about the kit is that the embarked Scout models are all armed with bolters. Also, aside from the cerberus launcher, the only weapon in the kit for the Storm is a heavy bolter. Personally, I think that a heavy flamer is a much better option and thus it should have been included in the kit.

It took me a while, but I reequipped all the embarked Scouts with bolt pistols and I made my own heavy flamer.

And best of all...

If the Storm is destroyed or the squad disembarks, I can remove the appropriate pieces. The antenna, which would likely have broken the very first time that I fielded the model, has also been magnetized.

My suicide Sternguard squad has proven its worth, time and again.  After I finish another Dev armed with a lascannon and an Acolyte, the Sternguard will likely be the next squad to get some paint.

I used the helmets/heads and shoulder pads from the new Sternguard and Vanguard kits to make these honored elite appear a bit more regal.  Now each member has both Terminator Honors and the Imperial Laurel.  Fitting honors for these heroes of the Imperium, who deploy via drop pod where the fighting is the thickest, and die to the man marine in every game.

I've also been experimenting with a biker captain accompanied by a bike squadron.  I haven't had much success with him yet, so I'm thinking about upgrading him to a Chapter Master and equipping him with storm shield to further improve his survivability.

Sadly, the Sternguard kit includes only a single grav gun, but luckily it also ncludes 2 combi-grav guns.  To convert the combi-gravs into grav guns I cut off the bolter muzzles and moved the grav gun muzzles down a bit.  The modified grav guns are about three-fourths the length of a true grav gun, so I call them grav carbines.  Since biker models hold their grav guns in one hand, the shorter grav carbines make perfect cavalry weapons for my Biker squad.

You're blowing my freaking mind with these models.  Good call on the victoria heads on the scouts- they look awesome.  Can I pester you for where you got the metal saddlebags on the bike squad/what kit they came from?  I'm working on a reclusiam bike squad (been in the works for way longer than that stupid dataslate has even been a glimmer in GW's eye), and need to add detailing to the backs of the bikes.  Any chance of some rear shots of the bikes?

I'm not a fan of the grav gun aesthetic GW decided on, I think it looks too similar to necron technology.  I much prefer the version in the breacher squads from forgeworld. That said, your Grav Carbine is a nifty idea.

Sadly, the metal saddlebags are no longer available. Years ago, the Space Marine Scout Biker kit was metal and plastic kit. The saddlebags were part of this kit. And back in the day when one could bit order from GW any bit from any kit, I ordered a bunch of the metal saddlebags. The project that I ordered the saddlebags never went anywhere, so they've been sitting in my bits box until now. I wish I had ordered more.

I did a Google image search and found an image of the metal bits from the old Scout Biker kit. You can see the saddlebags on the far right. You can probably find one of the saddlebags on eBay. Get yourself a resin casting kit and... whistlingW.gif

Koyote, it's all good brother- I figured it was going to be from an out of production kit seeig as how it's metal and metal has gone the way of the dodo for gw. Ill probably get on ebay and do exactly that, alongside my metal crusader sponsons and other "retro" bits. Now that I know where they come from I can hunt them down!
