Nice stuff. I don't know if you've seen any of the new Codex: Inquisition rules, but from what I've heard it should let you use your inquisitor like you originally planned, attached to your marine squads \m/

You are absolutely correct. thumbsup.gif

I have been playing around with two lists. One is my Double-Divination list that stars (counts-as) Tigurius and (counts-as) Coteaz. This list includes all of my experimental units; the Scouts, the Storm and the Bikers. My second list is led by good old (counts-as) Pedro Kantor (aka Brother Captain Artemis). Pedro is still awesome in the newest edition of Codex: Space Marines, so I saw no reason to replace him.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/Artemis1.jpg

This is my plan to squeeze out some advantages to my Pedro/Mortifactors list using the new Codex Inquisition. The Primary Detachment is Space Marines led by Pedro. My Allied Detachment is Grey Knights. My Special Allied Detachment is of course Inquisition.

The Grey Knights are now led by a Tech-Priest Secutor Calixis, a counts-as Ordo Xenos Inquisitor. This lets me use the Tech Priest model as something other than a measly Acolyte. Although now, he's now going to need a bigger pistol. smile.png

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPtech1_zps7494006f.jpg

Since my Grey Knight Strike Squad is being represented as a Mechanicus Herakli Cohort, all of my Mechanicus models will belong to the same detachment. This will be less confusing for my opponents.

The Ordo Xenos Inquisitor also gives me access to psychotroke grenades (which can make a big difference in H2H). And because I had 3 points left over I sprang for a servo-skull. This little guy can be used to keep enemy Infiltrators off objectives or guide my deepstriking GK SS or reduce the deviation of the Henchmens' Psychic Barrage.

By moving Coteaz to the Special Allied Detachment, he is now a Battle Brother to both my Space Marines and my Grey Knights. This permits him to join squads in either detachment and use his Divination powers to benefit all the units in my army.

In Codex: Inquisition, Coteaz doesn't make Henchmen Warbands Troops, he simply makes them scoring. By moving the Henchman Warband from the GK Allied Detachment to the Inquisition Special Allied Detachment, the unit remains a scoring unit.

Changing my Herakli from Purifiers to a GK Strike Squad was a tough decision. Purifiers are just so frickking good. Nevertheless, the GK SS adds another scoring unit to my list. It also gives me the option to deep strike the squad, and thus provides my army with more mobility. Lastly, my opponents have been using deep striking suicide squads to shut down my Thunderfire Cannon. The GK SS's Warp Quake power will let me protect my backfield from such units. And since the GK SS is at full strength, I have the option to split the unit into combat squads. This can extend my Warp Quake range or I can use one squad defensively and one squad offensively.

The army had 6 to 9 scoring squads.

Thanks. I was "forging the narriative" long before Jervis suggested it. msn-wink.gif

I've been toying around with the idea of incorporating a Land Raider Proteus into one of my alternative lists as a transport for my Deathwatch (Sternguard) unit. The Proteus rules aren't widely accepted in "standard" 40K, but its rules are stamped "official" by Forge World and such units are becoming increasingly accepted in my local gaming community and local tournaments.

Aside from its awesome retro appearance, what draws me to the Proteus is its ability to outflank. This lets it show up on a flank and blast away at the side or rear of enemy armor with 2 lascannons and a multi-melta. If needed, the Sternguard can disembark and tackle a second unit, either in anti-armor mode or anti-infantry mode. The Proteus lets me apply pressure from a flank and it gives me a shot at the Linebreaker VP. The Ceramite Armor increases it survivability as the bane of Land Raiders is the ubiquitous melta gun.

Overall, the Proteus gives my Mortifactors list a bit more mobility and flexibility.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPProteus2_zpsd1d5e850.jpg

So far, I've assembled the base model, removed the silly gun sight from the lascannons, added a smoke launcher, swapped out the heavy bolters for heavy flamers, added a few more rivets, and made my own Deathwatch 'I' and skull insignia. You can't see it in this photo, but I've replaced the doors on the rear of the sponsons with FW Inquisition Rhino doors.

I modeled a gun servitor to operate the pintle mounted multi-melta.

I SECOND THAT!

Here are some WIP shots of a counts-as Servo-Skull for my Pedro list and a counts-as Tigurius (aka Brother Librarian Quintus, Chief Librarian of the Mortifactors) for my Double-Divination list.  Two more examples of super simple Koyote conversions/kit bashes.

Yes, I was one of those idiots who surrendered to GW's evil pricing machinations and spent $30 for a single plastic Space Marine mini. In my defense, the model is very cool and it works perfectly as a counts-as Tigurius... Of course, this was GW's plan all along. Under-price a character with awesome rules and then jack up the price on a terrific counts-as version of said model. Doh! http://z6.ifrm.com/8152/110/0/e5006629//e5006629.gif

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPQuintus1_zps1f558ac6.jpg

The Librarian's head comes from the new Sternguard kit. My original plan was to replace the left shoulder pad with one of the fancy shoulder pads from the Sternguard or Vanguard kits, but in the end, I decided that a simple Mortifactors chapter badge was most fitting. So all my work sawing off the left pad and rebuilding the model's back with GS was a waste of time. I should have simply attached one of my GS skulls to the existing pad and been done with it. Oh well.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPQuintus_zpsf859f128.jpg

I don't care for the look of the cherub familiar floating above the Librarian's shoulder, so I repurposed it as a Servo-Skull marker for Tech-Priest Secutor Calixis, the counts-as Ordo Xenos Inquisitor in my Pedro list. To tie the cherub to the Techpriest, I removed the horned skull Librarian icon from its tiny shield and replaced it with a skull and cog icon of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Easy peasy.

Drilling the hole in the bottom of the cherub chewed up some of the cabling, so after gluing the wire in place, I rebuilt the damaged area of cable with GS.

In my Double-Divination list, Sergeant Benedict is armed with a power fist.  In my Pedro list, he is not.  Rather than paint a new model for my Pedro list, I painted a new arm.  Magnets!

I finally finished my second Dev armed with a lascannon.  Pew pew pew.

My Henchman Warband is comprised of 8 Psykers and 2 ablative wounds (i.e. Warrior Acolytes).  I painted the cyber mastiff several months ago.  Now the mastiff  finally has a painted handler.  Both master and hound have been trained to detect the slightest hint of daemonic possession and charged with the duty to execute any of their wards who exhibit such signs.

The cyber mastiff is from the Necromunda Arbites range.  The mastiff handler is a Bretonnian Battle Pilgrim.  The auto-pistol and hand was clipped from a plastic Chaos Cultist model.  The chainsword is from the plastic Space Marine Scout kit.  The Scout chainsword is a bit smaller than a standard Space Marine chainsword.  I chose the smaller chainsword because it better matches the scale of human sized models.

I'm really glad you've been updating again. I signed up ages ago just to tell you how inspiring this log is and I've been waiting to use my first post on the B&C to tell you so without committing the grave sin of threadomancy. I may just have to go back to the start and read it through again! The narrative, conversions and crisp painting style has really appealed to me.

Wow. Thanks. I am honored.

I may do another Batrep in January. I have some games planned for the 11th.

Also, I've decided to move Chief Librarian Quintus ahead of Sternguard Squad Xenophon on my painting table. I already have the model primered and ready to go. I just need to pick up a couple of new bottles of blue paint.

  • 2 weeks later...

Now that my local Battle Bunker has been downsized to the size of a postage stamp, I am a left without a good place to play 40K.  There are a few independents here in Seattle, but they all have ghetto terrain. And since I've spent all this time converting and painting Mortifactors to make them look purty, I decided that I ought to make some purty terrain for them to play on.  My goal is to make enough terrain for two 6' x 4' 40K tables.

I already have some wilderness terrain that I built for War Machine & Hordes.  This was a good start, but I wanted to add in some ruins to provide more elevation, cover, and area terrain to my tables.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WMTerrain_zps5779ad87.jpg

Next, as a Christmas present to myself I purchased two Gothic Ruins sets and two of the Large Gothic City Building sets.  The plan was to build two good LOS blockers and have enough pieces left over to make several smaller pieces of terrain.  The Pegasus kits cost me about half the price it would cost me to purchase  the equivalent size and number of GW 40K buildings.

http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af329/realmoflegends/PegasusGothicCityRuins1.jpg

http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af329/realmoflegends/PegasusGothicLargeSet.jpg

I was able to use one Gothic City Building kit to make two good size section of ruins with enough solid wall sections to block LOS to a single Land Raider.  The second story is all windows and high enough to provide cover to flyers, but not entirely conceal them.  I built the good sized LOS blockers because it is my belief that placing a couple of good sized LOS blockers midfield makes 6th Edition more enjoyable and challenging for everyone.

The Pegasus Gothic Ruins kits include a partial second floor for each section of ruins. The second floor provides an elevated shooting platforms with cover, but as the kit is all window walls, these sections of ruins will not completely block LOS.  This is fine by me.  The second floor makes these pieces good for castling, but not the perfect bunker for hiding 10 Cultists or Grots who spend the entire game sitting on an objective, in their deployment zone, safe from direct fire shooting and barrage.

From the 4 kits I built 12 sections of ruins, of various heights, sizes, and LOS blocking qualities. The four sections from the 2 Gothic Ruins kits are designed to represent ruins, so they only required cleanup and assembly.  The other 8 sections are constructed from pieces designed to represent intact buildings, so to make them look like proper ruins I had to tear into them with my snips and hobby knife.

I used a lightweight spackle to to fill in the cracks and holes.  It's an inexpensive material that is easy to use.  Ideal for this kind of project.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPRuins_zps053818c0.jpg

Here's a WIP photo of ten sections of ruins based with 0.040" styrene bases and ready for texturing.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPRuins1_zps3a68fed3.jpg

Each Pegasus Gothic City Ruins kits includes two identical sections of ruins.  The distance between the ground floor and the second floor is four inches.  This is one inch higher that the distance that separates the floors of GW 40K building kits.  The increased distance makes moving from floor to floor a bit harder, which can be both good and bad.

I've included infantry models and a tank in the photo to give you a feel for the scale.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPRuins3_zps1991f523.jpg

Here is one of my tall LOS blocker ruins.  Once again, I've included a tank to show scale.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPRuins2_zps1d7ee7ab.jpg

And here is a WIP photo of all 12 sections of ruins based and textured.  I will let them dry overnight and then primer them black tomorrow, after work.  I doubt that I will get around to painting them before the games that I have planned for Saturday.  Chief Librarian Quintus is half painted and I am eager to finish him before Saturday, so I guess we will have to play with primered ruins.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPRuins4_zps19dae5e6.jpg

Goodness, I have to say, I honestly enjoy those buildings visually if for no other reason than they don't have skulls and other grim dark motifs plastered over every surface.   I could understand it for a chapter monastery, sure, but you can't honestly tell me hospitals and orphanages in the 41st millenium suffer from skull overload, haha.

really nice! where did you purchase those buildings???i might have to invest in some myself!

The Warstore.  I can't recommend this site enough.  I have been shopping at The Warstore for years and I have always received excellent customer service and fast shipping.

http://www.thewarstore.com/

It cost me a can of black primer and half a lung, but last night I primered all twelve sections of ruins. Next time I will wear a mask. I primered them on my back porch, but it was too cold and damp to leave them outside to dry, so I placed them on top of cardboard boxes, outside of my office. Kids don't do this at home. That much primer drying puts off a ton of fumes. I could smell it from my bedroom on the third floor. Ugh. yucky.gif

I had a long day at work today and an awful commute, so by the time I got home I wasn't in the mood to do any fine detail work. Rather than work on my Librarian, I drank a few beers, listened to Bernard Cornwell's novel 1356, and dry brushed the ruins. When I have more time I will paint, dry brush, and apply static grass to the bases so they match my wilderness terrain. But for this weekend the bases will remain black. Off to bed now. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/bedtime2_zps03384630.gif

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/WIPRuins5_zpsfb41352c.jpg

Saturday, I played two games using my Pedro list. Both games were against codices that I had not played against before, the newest Eldar and Tyranid codices.

The lighting was poor so I didn't bother with photos. Consequently, the best I can do is post a text Batrep. Sorry.

My first game was a Crusade (Vanguard) mission (5 objectives) against a Mech Eldar list. The tanks were upgraded like crazy, but aside from equipping the Farseer with a singing spear, the infantry models had zero upgrades.

Farseer

Spiritseer

9 Dire Avengers -Wave Serpent

9 Dire Avengers -Wave Serpent

10 Banshees -Wave Serpent

5 Wraithguard -Wave Serpent

5 Wraithguard

2 Fire Prisms

The new Wave Serpents are fast, maneuverable, can put out a ton of twin-linked shots, and are super durable. Combine this with an opponent who made 80% of his 4+ cover saves for his tanks (that they get simply for moving), and you don't need to cast the rune stones to predict the outcome of this game. :(

I was doing everything right. I was landing pods with combi-meltas against unshielded tanks and maneuvering my Hunter and infantry to the rear armor, but try as I might, I couldn't beat his hot dice. my arm includes a good amount of heavy weapons, so I wasn't ill-equipped to tackle the Mechdar. Also, it didn't help that Coteaz got a crap second Divination power, Scrier's Gaze. Misfortune or Perfect Timing could have made a big difference, as Coteaz (part of a special Inquisition detachment) was attached to my Dev Squad.

By the time his dice started ti cool and I diwned a few tanks, I had too few scoring units to win. 9 to 4 Eldar.

Even though I took a stomping, it was a good game, played against a nice guy. It also got me thinking about a few changes to my Pedro list.

My second game was a Big Guns Never Tire (Dawn of War) mission (5 objectives) against Tyranids. Once again Coteaz got the crap Scrier's Gaze as his second power. Although, Lady Luck did smile on me when Deathleaper's It's after me ability reduced Coteaz's LD by only 1. It could have been reduced by as much as 3 points. Yikes!

Tyrant -wings, devourers, 2 psykic powers

3 Tyranid Warriors

2 Zoanthropes

3 Hive Guard

3 Hive Guard

20 Hormagaunts -poison

20 Hormagaunts

25 Termigaunts

Mawloc

The Mawloc's ability to pop up and destroy everything under the large template really messed with my head. I split my Grey Knight Strike Squad into combat squad and spread them out so their Warp Quake power could protect my entire line. However, since the Nids' synapse/shadow rule reduces pskyers' LD by 3, my opponent was able to zip his flying Tyrant across the board on Turn 1 and shut down one of the GK combat squad's Mawloc defense with ease.

On Turn 1, I got really lucky and instant killed all 3 of the Tyranid Warriors with an Orbital Bombardment. This left his entire right flank without synapse control and really messed with my opponent the entire game.

Deathleaper spent the game doing absolutely nothing. It was placed on the Tyranid's right flank. My opponent had planned to use it in conjunction with a squad of Hormagaunts, supported the Tyranid Wariors, to make a combined push at my left flank. However, when the Tyranid Warriors got blasted from orbit, the Hormagaunts failed their LD test and spent the rest of the game eating one another. Without the Hormies' support, my opponent wasn't willing to risk Deathleaper (his army's Warlord) by throwing him at my strongest flank.

Both of my Sternguard squads landed on target, but totally whiffed their to-hit rolls. Squad Xenophon got blasted by Zoanthropes and then finished off by Termagaunts. Deathwatch Team Ixion got mauled by a Mawloc, but because the burrowing beast deviated into the pod, and it couldn't destroy the pod, it suffered a Deep Strike Mishap. I placed the nasty beastie in a far corner where it spent the rest of the game out of synapse range and chewing on itself, thanks to a failed LD test. Squad Ixion went on to devastate a squad of Hormagaunts and maul a squad of Hive Guard with their heavy flamer and special issue ammo.

The second Mawloc appeared, ate some marines, but then got blasted to pieces by my Dev Squad.

It took a ton of shooting, but I managed to knock the flying Tyrant down. Desperate, to prevent the Tyrant from becoming airborne again, I assaulted it with 5 GKs and my Inquisitor. I was hoping that between their force weapons (one was a daemonhammer) and the Inquisitor's psychotroke and psyk-out grenades, I could finish off the beast. And while my grenades worked splendidly (Tyrant reduced to I1, A1, and auto hits against Tyrant), the Tyrant's synapse/shadow shut down the force weapons and my to-wound rolls were miserable. The Tyrant won by one and my Grey Knights ran away.

A Turn later I grounded the Tyrant again, but this time it didn't get back up. A blast from a meltagun, took its last wound.

As expected, my Thunderfire Cannon spent the game decimating the little bugs.

My opponent called it on Turn 5. Another good game.

Thanks guys.

Painting blue is a nice break from the colors that I typically use. It's such an easy color to work with.

Typically, a Librarian's armor is painted blue except for the left shoulder pad, which is painted in the Chapter's colors. I deviated a bit from the traditional color scheme by painting the right knee pad black to better match the Mortifactor's color scheme. My original plan was to leave it solid black edged with a grey highlight. This looked too plain, so I painted it the black and bone checkered pattern that I've used to paint my other Mortifactors' right knee pads. It's a fun little detail that better ties my Librarian to the rest of my Mortifactors.
