Deathwatch (Mantis Warriors)

At one time or another, this model has been an Ultramarine, an Imperial Fist, and a Mortifactor, depending upon what spare shoulder pad I had available to me.  It was only as I was preparing to paint this model did I put some real thought into this model's identity and switch it to a Mantis Warrior.  And while I was able to sculpt an acceptable Mantis Warriors chapter badge, I struggled to come up with other ways to reinforce this model's Mantis Warriors identity.

After sculpting pad, my next idea was to replace the model's unhelmeted-rebreather head with a beaky helmet. I did so because, as an old timer, when I think of Mantis Warriors I think of the classic Mantis Warriors illustration from GW's 1993, Warhammer 40,000 Compendium.

It took some time, but after reviewing the 40K Wiki and Lexicanum Mantis Warriors articles, I came up with one more small idea. And it had to be small because the model's heavy flamer, backpack, and tubing cover much of the model, leaving very little room for any other additions.  Since the Mantis Warriors are "masters of guerrilla warfare," I added to the model a grenade-and-coiled-cord bit from the plastic Space Marines Scout kit.  The cord and explosive charge are used to make booby-traps.  This model is the squad's expert on demolitions and guerrilla warfare. :)

Great job on the Mantis Warrior.

BTW - any chance for a group shot of the DWKT so far? *cough*hint*cough*

I am working on the last member of the DW squad, an Exorcist armed with a missile launcher (ha ha -a little SoB joke there).  As per usual, once I'm done with the Exorcist, I will take individual shots of the model.  I will also take some group shots of the Deathwatch squad.

After the DW, the plan is to paint the Techpriest so my Henchmen Warband will be finished. After that, I will probably return to my Mortifactors and finally put some paint on my Dev squad.

As the Exorcists are rumored to be a successor Chapter of the Grey Knights, I thought it fitting to give this model a helmet (from the BA Death Company kit) that resembles those used by the Grey Knights.  And because of their unique initiation rites and focus on battling Chaos, I added to the model extra purity seals, a tiny reliquary (from the GK kit), and scrolls (containing some of the  666 verses from the Book of Exorcisms).

Thanks guys. It's not a great photo, but it gives you an idea of what the squad looks like.

I've started painting the Tech-Priest. I can already tell that this little guy is going to be a chore to paint. In addition to all of the fun little details I have to pick out, I'm going to paint mechanicus cog pattern trim along the edges of the model's hood and robes. It won't be much fun, but It will be good practice for the 10 Herakli models that I need to paint. confused.gif

After painting the cog trim on the hood and guimpe* I started on the trim around the base of the robes.  I painted the base line and realized that the line alone, without the cog teeth, looked pretty good.  Then I thought, if I can get away with painting only a line at the base of the robes, it will be less of a chore painting the robes on the 10 Herakli models.

So what do you think?  Does the trim work as is or should I paint the cog teeth?

*Pronounced 'gamp'

I think you should paint the cog teeth.. if only because I am a sucker for the little details. He's ad mech damnit! Hehehe.

Then again its an amazingly sharp paint job, the red is just stunning, the green is almost luminescent in its potency, and the model has a lot of character, so who am I to judge?

Sweet stuff.

WIP Icarus Lascannon:

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/New2/icaruslascannon_zpsffca2436.jpg

My friend convinced me to try out the Icarus Lascannon option for my Aegis Defense Line.  In past games I've struggled against AV 13+, so an additional lascannon should come in handy.  Unlike the Quad-Gun it's not twin-linked, but if it's operated by Captain Artemis (i.e. Pedro Kantor), it shoots at BS 5.  Also, the Icarus' 72" range will be useful against Manticores and other long range threats that my opponents tend to deploy in a far corner, well out of the range of my other heavy weapons.

I made the lascanon turret using spare bits from a bunch of different kits.  I mounted it on the chassis that I built for my Quad-Gun.  I still have the Quad-Gun turret and the Icarus turret isn't glued to the chassis so I can swap out turrets when the need arises.

It's not one of my best conversions, but as time passes its odd design is growing on me.  Its shape  reminds me of one of those drinking bird toys. :)
