norskman
So, I'm going crazy trying to paint my models. Basecoating, that's easy, no sweat. But I keep getting snagged on the highlights with every model. So, close to a quarter of my models are just basecoated and the rest primed. My issue is that I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to highlight. Specifically (as I've seen a lot of different techniques) I just need help figuring out where to place the highlights. Any advice? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259205-highlighting/ Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
The easiest way to get your head around where to highlight is simple, grab a torch (or replacement light source) and shine it directly top down on your model, where the light is most prominant is where the most noticable highlights should be. Of course you can move your light source to wherever you like, the important thing is that it is consistant for your army/squad. Once you do it for a bit you'll no longer need the light source. Captain Hwarang
Grotsmasha's advice is great. It gives a great effect if you can pull it off. It is known, I believe, as zenithal lighting. Another method is called line highlighting. Basically, use a lighter color of your base coat and just outline everything with it. It gives a bit of a cartoony feel, but it looks decent. It can sometimes be tricky to figure out where to put the highlights in this method, especially on shoulder pads and lower leg armor, however. Many models in codexes are painted similarly. What colors are you working with? How much time are you willing to spend per model? A bit more information will help other members answer your question better. -CH Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259205-highlighting/#findComment-3153860 Share on other sites
Mazer Rackham
Can't add much to the good advice above, but quick tips: Use the side of your brush against edges like shoulderpad rims etc, and don't overload your brush. hmk17
I'd go with a desk lamp over a flashlight... Try watching these. It should help.
