Fellow Ultramarine brothers!

I finally finished my Sternguard squad and like to share some pics with you all. To be honest... it was a real pain in the botty to paint these lads. All these chains and parchments... not to mention the white parts.

However... I hope you enjoy it

How long did they take to paint?

That is a good question... I would say 3 months at almost painting for two hours a day, but I'm not quite sure.

How many coats of white did it take.

The models where primed chaos black. I used space wolves grey as a foundation for the white parts and 4-5 layers of thinned ceramite white to get these results...horrorible :P

I feel bad criticising your work, but the white looks quite thick and not too well shaded. But otherwise, great work :P

Don't feel bad! Honest criticism is totally alright and very wellcome. The white is a bit thick, but consdidering how difficult it is, to get a "clean" white I think it's just okay :(

I'm getting my airbrush soon, after that these kinds of incidents will belong to the past :P

I have to agree with people here, they look very nice.

If I have to give you criticism, it woukld be 2 minor things.

1. The Bases could be better, they are rather plain.

2. A bit of free hand text on name tags/parchments would make the models just awesome.

I am not a painter my self, so I could not, if my life depended on it, do what you have done. So good work mate.

I don't think the white is too thick, but perhaps just a bit too flat? The line highlighting on the blue power armor is perfect, but you've left yourself with nowhere to go on the white, you know what I mean? All you can get is a shadow and midtone (white), but no highlight, whereas you've got three tones on the blue.

There was a great tutorial in an old white dwarf on painting white scars:

Basecoat with Ulthuan Grey.

Thinned Nuln Oil Wash.

Tidy up basecoat with Ulthuan grey.

Highlight with white scar.

This would look sweet with your sternguard, and I think would match the techniques on the rest of the armor. However, it may not give you as clean of a white as you're after, but it's worth a shot.

Also, +1 for freehand script on the scripty things.

Very crisp, clean, and simply effective, as always. Love it :tu:

I disagree about the bases; it's all about the figure, not the base! :P

My only criticism involves the metal bits. They don't look like metal to me, more like molded resin or some other non-reflective, softer-than-metal material. My friend had leveled a similar line to me about my Tomb Kings, so I learned and went back over just the edges with some fine Mithril Silver. It gives the realistic metallic sheen, though an alternative is to drag graphite over the edges...just as effective.

Agreed, but I like to note that this paintjob is for gaming and not for display :tu:

Also agreed... but after three months of paintig I just wanted to have these guys done. Like I said... they were a pain in the *** ;)

That doesn't disqualify you from giving me constructive criticism! Thank you! :P

You really got me here... I don't like it either so I'm going to work on that:)

@ All Thank you all for your compliments and honest criticism :) It's very much appreciated!

Even for gaming purpose, good looing bases just does so much for the models. It doesn't have to be anythink fance, maybe just a bit of flock or rocks.

Thank you mate! I often get looked down upon since I don't paint. I pay a good painter to do it for me as I do think 40K is a very visual game and would never play it with unpainted mini's.

Personally I don't think you need to change a thing. Achieving "brilliant" white to that standard is quite a feat and for me really adds a crispness to the models and clearly shows the vet nature of the unit.

Wish I could achieve these results in any of my squads. Kudos for the dedication to keep with the project for such a long time also.

Really great looking Sternguard, and to be honest if it were me I would'nt change a single thing :P

Many thanks to both of you to encourage me not to change anything, but I have to give credit to Seahawk and going to add some highlights on the metal parts with mithrill silver.
