Tyranids

Tyranids have lots of great units though. It is just that people tend to believe what they read on the Internet and believe it unfortunately. In truth they can be very competitive. They do have a steep learning curve which is probably the 2nd biggest factor that puts people off to them.

G :)

Learning curves have nothing to do with overall power of a codex.

You either have effective options or you don't. In the end, you are always limited by what's in the rules of the game.

The current Codexes just happen to be not totally disparate in power levels

People win with the worst characters in fighting games, too; that doesnt make the character any better

To a certain extent, tiers are a misplaced construct of stratification in 40k due to the nature of the game. Sure, some codices give slight advantages in terms of point effacy, but it doesn't make or break a battle by itself. Because the game is so easily swayed by the torrents of fate, it really comes down to the moment of the clash and what the wheel of fate decides will happen. Good tactics, a sound strategy, and a little luck make a hell of a lot more difference then how much more efficient one codex is over another.

If you take, for example, a 1500 pts list made of

6 x 5 GKSS (1 psycannon), each squad with a razorback with heavy bolter and psy ammo

2 dreadnought with TL autocannon x2

a stormraven (MM + AC with psyammo)

and a cheap inq,

You pretty much have enough 24 inch firepower to kill 2 MCs a turn.

The thing to watch for is the Flying Hive tyrant. The first reflex is to make it a top priority. But I can tell you it is not always the best decision. My last 2 games, I think I spent nearly 3 turns shooting everything I had at it, and barely was able to kill it (my stormraven waited until turn 4 to show up). If it stays airborne, it is pretty hard to kill it. So something you must make a choice and ignore it turn or two to try killing something else that can potentially be deadly near the end of the game. It is a hard choice to make because it can cost you a unit, but sometimes it is worth it at the end.

I would not design a list specifically tailored to beat Tyranids. As has been pointed out GK have all the necessary tools. Obviously the OP needs some changes but that could possibly incorporate tactics as well as a redesign of the army list.

G
