WG Vrox Posted August 22, 2012 Share Posted August 22, 2012 I know I roll to many 1s, last time I ran the squad I outflanked right behind a GK HQ left by himself, due to my opponent tying to switch units, after I came in behind him 8 inches away I was like yes, he is dead. I fired all 4 shots and rolled 3 1s on the overheat, killed 3 scouts after I failed all three saves..... I was laughing and crying at the same time. Overheat is ok when your rolling 3+ saves on power armor, but not a good combo with the 4+ saves scout armor gives ya. Now it's not all doom and gloom, I have heard other Wolf Lords love their scouts in a plasma squad. I am sure they will chime in and give you a better overview. ktd Posted August 23, 2012 Share Posted August 23, 2012 Hi. I tried scouts with plasmagun, 2 plasma pistols ang wg with dual plasma pistols. They kill chimera, and then died horribly from hellhounds cannon. I tried 5-6 wulf guards with dual plasma pistols and wp with pp and hunter on rhino. 11-13 plasma shots with reroll of all 1 kills any units. And on rhino they has 2 foot plasma range. I thinking to take them on Redeemer. I think, on redeemer in outflank they will be scary. Sorry for bad english. Wulfebane Posted August 23, 2012 Share Posted August 23, 2012 I've read this somewhere before, so I'll repeat the sentiment. Drawing from the points Vrox and ktd made, it is entirely too inefficient to pour that many points into what is widely believed to be a suicide unit. A melta gun, sure. Even a plasma pistol on occasion. But 45 points worth of plasma in a carapace Scout pack that at minimum costs 75 points is entirely too costly, despite a potential reroll from a WP (which would increase the pack cost by nearly double). Even 25 pts for the minimum cost of melta bombs is a stretch; cheaper to give a single bomb to a WGPL. I am not saying that Wolf Scouts are meant to and/or expected to die in 1-2 rounds of shooting. I personally find them highly survivable in the right circumstances/deployment. But even so, the odds of survival are still slim, and the cost of plasma, especially when potentially overheating, is too high a cost for this unit, in my opinion. If anything, I would put the plasma with a GH pack joined to a SoH WP with a TDA WG escort. The WG can take the incoming fire and the GH will have higher odds of surviving overheating and any stray bullets (and imo will have more bodies to distribute wounds than a scout pack). However, I also could see this GH pack infiltrating in conjunction with a scout pack, offering cover fire while the scouts advance to pop some tanks.
