Rumour Control's Astral Claws

Rumour Control

Recommended Posts

Hello all, Here are my Astral Claws which i painted up for Badab War part 2 campaign on 26/27th may this year. Most of the time I use the siege assault vanguard list but occasionally use the standard codex for a little variation.

I also was nominated for best painted army which i was and still am most proud of.

I'll write a short why i chose astral claws and where i plan to go from here a little later, for now enjoy the pics.

A little background on how this army came about, This army was bought and painted by me for the badab war part 2 campaign weekend back in may. When the badab war IA books came out i wasnt that interested, I was at the time working on another large imperial army that i have and wanted to get most of that finished before i started somthing else, Good job I bought the books (Thanks Scott!!! my store manager, its all your fault lol) when i did, wow the quality of the more recent books is astonishing, otherwise i'd have never got my other army finished!

I was torn between astral claws, carcharodons and red scorpions but i wanted a challenge of painting a metallic army and to make it look as real but as 40k as possible if you get what i mean and the astral claws fluff is cool.

All in all the army took around 5 months to complete, but most of it was done in around 5 weeks. The silver armour was airbrushed using a technique called zenithal highlighting using vallejo model air paints.

Excellent work Rumour Control.

I'm going to second Isiah's comment and agree that the weathering is excellent and the dust works really well. Great job!!!

Did you get the weathering powders along with the rest of what looks like a HUGE Forge World purchase? I'm very jealous of all the resin you have floating around there.

How long before we get to see additions to the army?

Cheers

Widowmaker

Thanks for the nice comments guys, really keeps the momentum going.

@ jeremy1391: Thanks!

@ isiah: The ram is An awsome bit of kit! Ive only played a few game with it so still getting used to using it and its even better in 6th. I think because it says RAM in the name i have to ram everything with it when ramming somtines isnt the best plan( i forget it has weapons too, pretty good ones too!)

@ widowmaker: The weathering powders ive had a while before the forge world ones came out ( MIG powders ) and they are really good, im still learning how to use them and get the best out of them. Yes it was a large forge world purchase but i bought the army over a few months so it didnt make such a big hole in my bank account and couldnt resist when i read the books, though not my largest forge world army buy a long shot, that title belongs to my krieg but i wont say any more on those as this is a power armoured forum. There are more additions im working on at the moment as i intend to start my WIP thread at some point today when i get 5 mins.

@ Mercadius: Thank you though i dint have the tyrant himself yet, somthing else for the future. That was my intention, to make them look like they had been through it all, badab wouldnt have been a very nice place when it all went down at the palace of thorns.

@Dechande: Thank you again, the rhino is a forge world kit, demios pattern. I wasnt sure wether to use the older shape rhinos as the badab war was fairly recent but decided to go with it in the end.

Thanks again guys for the comments.

Always awesome to see more of the Tyrant's own here. Love the weathering, and the white-ish silver you achieved is very unique; very nice. My only critisism is your golds... sadly, they seem very flat. Other than that, great job!

Omnes Salutant Tyranni!

Likewise 1000heathens, i was admiring your thread only yesterday, what a bitz box you must have, I will comment on your thread later when i get a moment. As to my golds, do you think maybe a highlight possibly?

I always struggle highlighting gold as i think mine always end up looking too silver rather than gold, maybe my highlights are too much though ive only highlighted these with burnished gold so far.

Thanks again for the comments.

Try this man... wash your golds with devlan mud (or whatever the new equivilant is nowadays), go back over the raised areas with your gold again, avoiding the recesses, then wash again with Gryphonne Sepia (or again, the new version), and re-go over the raised areas with gold. If you're still not entirely happy, then use an uber thin highlight of Mithril Silver on the absolutley highest areas, very sparingly. That's how I do my golds, and it works out great.

Best of luck man, looking forward to more!

BTW, how much of a beast was assembling the Cestus?

1000heathens, thanks for the method, i washed them with devlan then highlight with the same burnished gold. I'll try your method next time i paint some gold which will be soon i hope.

I didnt assemble the caestus! I bought it from a friend who never used it so stripped it and repainted it, it turned out pretty well i think. I have 2 more caestus to build over the next few weeks so i'll let you know how i get on (as far as im aware its a little awkward!)

Thanks again for the tips on the gold!
