The Putrifiers - Plague Marines WiP

Now that I have some free time, I've gotten back into 40k for the first time in about 4 years. I've had an unpainted chaos army for far too long, so I decided something had to be done! Most of the army is likely to be pure Nurgle, so I decided to mess around with a paint scheme I found on warseer.

I'm going to take another look under natural light, but so far, I'm pleased with the results. For those who are interested, I've detailed my method below.

I started with a basecoat of Gretchin Green over a white undercoat followed by a heavy drybrushing of Rotting Flesh. The weapons and tubing were painted with Boltgun Metal and the rusty areas with Calthan Brown. The topknot was coated with Desert Yellow and then the whole model was given a Devlan Mud wash, followed by Gryphonne Sepia. Once this had fully dried, I gave the bare head a coat of Thraka Green to try and make it appear as putrid as possible! The rust effect was achieved using Tamiya weathering powders. The stuff went on fine, but it is very loose so I had to seal it with satin varnish. This casued it to dissolve slightly, but I'm not too bothered about that.

My question is what can I do to improve them? I reckon I could attempt to make the armour more rusty, but this could make the model too orange! Also, what colour should I paint the helmet lenses?

Any feedback is welcome. I know that I'm not that good a painter, so any advice on how to improve my technique would be very much appreciated!

I'm still getting to grips with the image hosting system, so apologies for any oversize images in advance...

Cheers to you for deciding to get something done about unpainted models!

In my opinion, it's a little bit too one-color. I would pick out the shoulder and leg trim in silver. Chainmail/Ironbreaker with the same wash you've used here should be fine and not take too long. Maybe red eye lenses?

How long are you willing to spend per model?

I agree with Captain Hwarang in that they are a little bit one colourish.

Find a common thing to highlight across the force (shoulder pad, skulls, helmet) and make it stand out. I like using purple with Nurgle. Maybe a deep purple shoulderpad?

Also, paint the eyes. Personally I like the effect of making the eyes look dead, so just paint them deep black and apply a green/purple glaze.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the suggestion of purple as it would make a real contrast with the green. Silver would also work well and be time effective. At the moment, I'm leaning towards Liche purple with a black/brown wash to deaden it slightly.

I'll mess around with some ideas and post an update in the next couple of days. For reference, these took me about 30 mins for the pair from white basecoat to what you see so far. I'm not too bothered about how long it takes, as long as I get a result that I'm happy with. I've got around 30 more marines to paint for this warband, so I'm willing to go the extra mile to make them look good.
