Hello,

I have a little trouble i dont like to basecoat using sprays, i tried imperial primer but it either bad case of it,or it is simply not working.

What happened?

What was the weather like, where did you spray and for how long did you shake the can before spraying, how closes was the nozzle to the minis?

which paints are better for basecoating black and grey, wanna try basecoating my models grey.
That depends on the colours used in your paints scheme.

Black has a tendency to desaturate while vibrant colours as a general rule look better on white/grey basecoats.

Sorry for a bit of unclear post.

Imperial primer i mean not a spray paint but as a simple paint with a brush,in my case it lookdlike wash. i used undercoat black from gw before and it is great and i like it,but i am running short on stock.

Trouble with the spray is not in a result but more in the fact that it is kinda too much a trouble to use it,as it kinda hard to use it on the street in my situation.

I use black and white colors in paint scheme mostly,i wanna try basecoat grey to make it easier to paint white parts.

Google "Liquitex Gesso" which comes in White, Black, Grey & Clear

Buy that (it's very good value for money)

????????

PROFIT!

But seriously, I hate spray priming and prime EVERYTHING by hand and I've been using Gesso for about a year and a half and am extremely happy with the results.

It's similar to Undercoat Black but has a nice trick when it dries in that it will pull into the detail of a model, which means you dont have to thin it (though you can if you want) and you can just roughly slap it on and lose no detail :D

If spraying in the street is a problem for you, I suggest you get a cardboard box so you can work inside.

Yes, you will need to open a window and/or use a fan...but unless you work under the kitchens air extractor...not many alternatives!

Well i pref to basecoat by hand.but thank you for advice!

Thank you everyone for the advices will try to get Liquitex, but for the time being Valejo.

I can definately second Tamiya primer! I have a can of the grey fine surface primer that I reserve for special occaisions as it usually costs me £7-8 for a tiny can. That said, I have yet to find a better primer as the Tamiya stuff goes on beautifully and never has a grainy finish. I haven't tried the brush-on equivalent, but if it's anything like the spray it should be very good.

I have an old archive box I use as a spray booth. I always lay out a load of old newspaper, but so far, the carpet is still the right colour. Just remember to open all the windows as it can get very "aromatic"!
