Building a wolf wing?

Hello,

I know this is prob a very general and full of personal choices question, but are there any guidelines which I have to consider when putting a wolf wing together?

Also are there any issues or aspects of playing them that I would have to keep in mind? I will be playing with them for fun, and thought this would be a good way of getting away from a gunline list.

Obviously the list would include logan, and they would be on foot as I have no pods or raiders yet. I was planning on a 1250 list to start, is this to small to even think about doing what I am planning on?

In my mind I see a few units full of different weapon setups with a couple of storm shields per unit and surrounded by roving wolf packs.

Like I said it would be for fun, but I dont want to be destroyed before it even has a chance of being fun?

Any hints from people who know would be gladly received.

Cheers

Dave

Off the bat, your biggest issue will be long ranged support, regardless of whether you take a bunch of CMLs. Outside of LF packs and/or mech, dunno how you'd consider resolving that. I guess dreadnoughts as mobile turrets would be closest to "wolf wing" aesthetics... they're just big, decaying terminators, right?

And to add what Wulfbane suggested:

1250 is a hard point level for an elite army like this, so you really need to maximize your ability to deal with hard targets. And since your troops alone cost the majority of your points, adding roving wolves is not as good as stationary Long Fangs with missiles. Not to take away from the fun, I like fun too, but you need packs above and beyond the two or three CML toting TDAWG to deal with said targets. Keep that in mind. These lists are full of great fluff and even better games, but you need to be prepared for anything. I recommend as options:

A Rune Priest (in TDA or RA) (Biomancy is a great out of the BRB, or LL , JAWW, or MH)

A Wolf Priest (in TDA0 )or in PA for his SotH ability)(I like to give him another Combi-Plasma)

Long Fangs (Missile Launchers are best, and the most cost efficient)

Thunderwolf Cavalry (give serious threat potential, AND counter attack, target priority too)

Dreadnoughts (a ML/PC or ML/LC dread is nothing to be ignored)

Wolf Scouts (even though they are suffering seriously in 6th ed, they offer you another means of target priority)

Hope this helps!!

End of Line

I run my Wolf Wing as footsloggers and have relied on my CMLs for Long Range support, sure it'd be a lot easier to stick two packs of Long Fangs in but if you're going for a true Terminator Wolf Wing then that's not an option.

The key to keeping them alive as footsloggers I've found are Lone Wolves. I take 3 Lone Wolves with Chainfists and Storm Shields. They run forward as fast as they can towards anything that's going to be particularly threatened by them. This means they can't be ignored and often means they end up taking a lot of your opponents firepower and that's what they do best. If you lose a Lone Wolf then he's not even giving up a Victory Point in 'Purge The Alien' missions. When it comes to Purge The Alien as well they're worth every point just for the psychological impact. I always make a point of pointing out that my opponent is on 3VP at the start of the game and watching them have to count back down as they're forced to deal with the Lone Wolves.

It's very tempting to go crazy and throw all the weapon options in there but it quickly becomes expensive and I think if you're going Wolf Wing then a basic Wolf Guard Terminator is your go to guy. With the option of a Power Sword, Power Maul or Power Axe for free you can cover the Ap3 and Ap2 bases without spending any points so one or two Powerfists per squad to take care of your S8 requirements and the maximum amount of heavy weapons is great. Then if you've got the points a comb-weapon or two are good.

My 1750pts list in 5th edition was:

Logan Grimnar

Lone Wolf - Terminator Armour, Chainfist, Storm Shield

Lone Wolf - Terminator Armour, Chainfist, Storm Shield

Lone Wolf - Terminator Armour, Chainfist, Storm Shield

10 Wolf Guard Terminators - 2 x Cyclone Missile Launchers, 2 x Combi Meltas

10 Wolf Guard Terminators - 2 x Cyclone Missile Launchers, 2 x Combi Meltas, 1 x Power Fist

10 Wolf Guard Terminators - 2 x Cyclone Missile Launchers, 2 x Combi Meltas, 1 x Power Fist

Not played a huge amount of 6th edition with my Wolf Wing yet as my Grey Hunters have been enjoying some time in the sun but I'm trying this 1500pt list tomorrow.

Logan Grimnar

Lone Wolf - Terminator Armour, Chainfist, Storm Shield, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves

Lone Wolf - Terminator Armour, Chainfist, Storm Shield, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves

Lone Wolf - Terminator Armour, Chainfist, Storm Shield, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves

7 Wolf Guard - 1 x Assault Cannon, 1 x Power Fist, 1 x Chainfist, 1 x Combi-Flamer, 1 x Thunder Hammer, 2 x Combi-Melta

7 Wolf Guard - 1 x Cyclone Missile Launcher, 1 x Chainfist, 1 x Power Fist, 1 x Combi-Melta, 1 x Combi-Flamer

7 Wolf Guard - 1 x Cyclone Missile Launcher, 1 x Chainfist, 1 x Power Fist, 1 x Combi-Melta, 1 x Combi-Flamer

1250pts is doable. I just think you'll have to stick to bare bones loadouts for the most part and buy nothing more than you actually need for your guys. I've never found squads of 5 survivable enough when footslogging so I'd go for 7 or 8 to a squad if you can, Logan's squad can always have slightly less and I generally consider him as one of my Power Fists already covered so save the points on a Terminator in his squad to combi-weapon arm two others.

Cheers to all for coming back.

It looks like im going to have to re-think alot of what I was. From what has been said it looks like having mini-characters isnt the way to go, not at this point level anyway.

If I increased the points level, I could add a shooty dread. But with only the one dread I cant see him lasting the first turn, especially if I dont get the first turn or a LF squad for roughly the same points.

I really like the idea of the lonewolfs, if they are that much of a distraction the nearly 300 points would mean the other units might survive to make contact.

Are wolf packs that bad, no one suggested they were any good? In an army that cant sweeping advance, I wanted something that was able to chase units down(my plan??? was to combine assaults with the term units). I was thinking of full size squads, IF I was to use them are squads of 10 no use/to easy to whittle down?

A wolf priest in term armour sounds like a good model to make up, This army is realy an idea to test my painting/modelling as much as gaming fun.

Anyway, like I said will have to have a major rethink but if anyone has any experience with wolf packs help would be gratefully received as I do love the models. A bit annoyed about the reality of the terms as the models have rather cool poses and the stormbolter options make them look less dynamic in my opinion. Although hand/weapon swaps might make this less of the case.

Thanks again.

Dave

The first rule of wargaming though: If there's something you want to do then go for it! If you fancy going for different loadouts then blue-tak the arms on for a few games and try them out. You might find that taking the opposite tack works out very well ^_^

One thing that I have been trying out is using PA WG models in a pack of termis to use as OLS targets and an inner pack 'meat-shield'. I'v only used it for a single game thus far, but it allowed me to keep a few of the significant models on the table top longer. This is also an option you could use. But as Elazar suggested, try some load outs out and see what works for your play style before you commit to the glue!!

End of Line

Cheers again.

I have just nearly finished painting my first wolf pack, so they will have to have an outing next friday??!

I will take what has been said onboard, will prob try the mini-character idea to see how low numbers work, before accepting that I need the bodies! The idea of bulking out the squads with PA could work, maybe they could have all the bells and whistles as I already saved 15 points on them?

Or bite the bullet and get raiders, just dont like painting vehicles!

Thanks

Dave
