How do you paint Deathwing?

I use the Vallejo Modal Air paints using

and
as a tutorial. The end result looks like the following

Don't use the new range because consistency through out my army is hard enough to achieve without GW switching colors on me.

well, I haven't used it on the DW yet, but I did use it on this guy

for the robes, and it was a little tedious..... I think I'll used Elmo's DW recipe, it's awesome.

I follow the old fluff about how after they killed off the genestealers and hybrids, they white washed their black armor and put no markings other then what the scratched in. Now I do a bit more so they are not just white but still try to make it look worn and white washed.

I always start with bestial brown, then layer up some bleached bone. Then i wash with badaab black in the deep recesses. Then i'll get into all the details, metallics etc. Once it all dries build up some more bone and skull white and wash again with gryphonne sepia. Touch up edges with skull white and then get weathering.

I definitely prefer them whiter and not 'old vanilla ice-cream' like they've been painted in WD..

Agreed. The GW ones always look too custardy to me. I think it has to do with the strange orangey colour they insist on using for the recesses. I prefer a more contrasty look.

If anyone has the latest White Dwarf, check out the single DW termy on page 75 by Dan Harden. Much whiter/cleaner armour (still using a slightly darker orange for recesses though) but strangely more 'gimdark' and menacing in character. Some nice battle damage too. Pretty much how I like the DW to look.

Btw your squad looks awesome sauce.

@Dread: Yes I've often pondered how it might look to mimic black plate covered with a hand-applied white over-colour. It would be difficult to pull off without them just looking like poorly painted models. It's all to do with the size/scale of the white coating looking 'right' for the relative size of the model. You seem to have made a pretty good fist of it with yours.

Cheers

I

I'm scared to even think about painting the DV DW termies in a light color, as I'm ultra-slow and not-so-good even with my simple Black Templars :D

Pre-shading, post-shading... uh oh. Well, I suppose in this sense it's good that it'll take a long time until I've finished all the BT models and have to contend with the DA models :)

I haven't painted entire Terminators with the new line, but I did do a bit of bone work on the leg supports of my Ven Dread in my WiP Stoneburners thread in my sig. It should be one of the last comments in the topic. I think I went through how I did it (though I would definitely increase the last Screaming Skull highlight a lot on Deathwing and finish it with the edge highlighting in pure White Scar). If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to try my hand at answering them.

I paint mine kinda similar to Dread, very heavily drybrushed. The first batch came out extremely white tinted (though it's warmer than in the photo), the newer ones I've done are a shade more bone colored. Flesh wash or Bestial or Scorched brown undercoat, heavy drybrush on Bleached/Ushabti Bone, with Skull White on top.

This one (Belial) is painted ontop of a very light brown, a la Elmo's method but without the washes. I think I like the darker bases better:

It's a simple 12 step process that utillizes 20+ colors....

Mods? Can we get a paint recipie thread together and pin it because this topic seems to come up annually and we might be getting the questions a bit more often this Fall/Winter...

@Artemid:

Your Belial ist BadAss!!!! Whats the Base Mini???

I've seen that before...it's not a GW mini...Chapterhouse, maybe?

This swell not-so-little guy from Hitech:

I chopped his sword hand off and gave him a GK Daemonhammer. It was a very good match for wrist diameter.

I've also ordered their standard bearer, their "nathaniel" (eagle hammer), their "raphael" (SB/PS, I'll chop it into probably claws), and a guy from Scibor to make an equally relicarmortastic command squad. :)

Huh... They have one... I should listen to that voice in the back of my head that says "You've read that somewhere else..."

I've had issue in the past with many of the links in the painting recipe thread being down (Trya-nid's has been down for a year +). Is there a protocol for submitting recipes and/or finding new links to the existing recipes?

He fits very nicely amongst a Terminator squad, actually - certainly better than the OOP Terminator Captain. He's a LITTLE bigger, but I think it suits him just fine, being the Master of the Deathwing and all:

Bases on mine like this:

After priming, Zandri dust and then Ushabti Bone with an airbrush:

Then chuck on a pretty thick coat of Seraphim Sepia:

Once dry it should look like this:

I've let it pool a bit on the shield in places, but its not the end of the world.

Drybush Screaming Skull over the top. Lots of passes with not a lot of paint seems to work best

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/20/403840_sm-Belial,%20Dark%20Angels.JPG

Finally, a quick final drybrush with Praxetl White to get the high highlights. Again very dry drybrush.

I'll finish the rest of the model and show the scheme in a similar way in the near future (when i can stop myself playing LoL).
