Marrak
Evening guys, Had a question regarding the veterans for the Salamanders. I had thought that they had all green armor regardless of status, but recent artwork from the Badab war books shows the non-terminator veterans with gold helmets. Is this a new revelation from the Badab war, or has this always been the case. None of the sergeants or commanders seem to be painted in this manner, and Vulkan obviously isn't either, (and for what it's worth, the Salamander veteran pack for Space Marine also has a green helmet) so I was looking for the community's collective wisdom to shine some light on the subject. Thanks! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259653-salamander-veteran-helmets/ Share on other sites
Bannus
Originally, the Sergeants were distinguished by an honor badge on their left knee and vets had a crux on their shoulderpad (much like Ultramarine vets) - the gold helmets in the Badab book is the first time this has been seen. Peredyne
Also originally, the Sallies had highly developed Infra-red vision and they used IR dyes in patterns on their banners to distinguish the companies and squads. To the normal eyes, they all looked alike. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259653-salamander-veteran-helmets/#findComment-3158881 Share on other sites
Nocturne Noble
I've interpreted the gold helmets as an indication of the marine's participation in the Badab campaign, which would have extra significance if you took the "Red Hour" into account. Though I imagine it would only be a 2nd company practice seeing as they were the only company involved. No other media to date that I've encountered feature Salamander veterans wearing gold helmets as an orthodox component of their organisation. Yet, in the second book of Nick Kyme's "Tome of Fire" trilogy; "Firedrake", a Badab War veteran, now a 1st company Firedrake called "Daedicus" has a black and gold striped kneepad to commemorate the campaign (page 125-126). Much how some Ultramarine vets would wear Tyranid trophies to display their distinct animosity towards the species. However, like the shift from yellow to red eye lenses and the fluctuating colour of their backpacks from black to green depending on what you look at (the rulebooks and Space Marine codex or Imperial Armour 10, and the first and second "Tome of Fire" covers respectively) this could be an evolution of their visual concept, or artistic license. Personally I prefer uniform green helmets for solidarity, but since I am building the 2nd company I'm open to marking a few Sternguard or tactical Sergeants as Badab veterans with some gold flourish. But I wouldn't apply it to any company beneath the second beyond a Captain who may have served in the second before their promotion.
