Origins of the Ferrous Vanguard

T
he Ferrous Vanguard Chapter was formed due to the insistent urgings of the Emperor's Tarot. Lost to time now, many scholars outside of the chapter have speculated as to the actual reason the Tarot decreed a new chapter be formed. The scribes and codiciers of the Vangaurd are even less forthcoming with information than the Estate Imperium, routinely changing subjects or simply walking away when the matter is brought up. While much remains lost to history, some information on the highly secretive Vanguard still circulates among the Imperium of Man. They are inarguably the sons of Ferrus Manus, the level of craftsmanship and artifice of their equipment second to only a few.

The Vanguard was formed out of the Iron Hands' 7th and 10th Companies; many of the Brothers from the 7th Company had no more than a few decades of service under their belts, while Neophytes from the 10th Company averaged less than 10 years' experience. However, to supplement the overall lack of experience, the Great Clan Council seconded some of their brightest up-and-comers to lead the fledgling chapter. Veteran Captain Mikael Noxita, Battle Master of the Gorgons of the Iron Hands' 1st Company, was chosen to assume the mantle of Chapter Master of the Ferrous Vangaurd. Under his command, they began to flourish. After the necessary recruiting practices, chapter doctrines, and training routines were determined, Master Mikael began recruiting heavily so as to achieve full chapter strength expediently.

During this time, the Neophytes that had come from the Iron Hands finished undergoing their transformation into Astartes, and they took over the task of testing and training the fresh, raw Aspirants. Meanwhile, the most mechanically and technically inclined Brothers were forwarded to Mars to become the Chapter's first Techmarines. Within the first few years of their training, the Priesthood realized that the Marines being sent to them by the chapter had much more potential than those from other chapters. As a result, the Mechanicum offered the Vanguard a deal: they would provide advanced training for promising Techmarines, as well as allowing the Astartes access to various iterations of rare weaponry, armor, and war machines. In return, the Ferrous Vanguard would occasionally support the Mechanicum's Explorator fleets, primarily in searching for lost STC technology but their scope has also come to include Xenos tech from time to time.

Crusade Fleet

T
he Ferrous Vangaurd ties itself to no single world. Based out of the Segmentum Solar, the Chapter instead ceaselessly roams the stars in their ships, each of the three Battle Barges of the Chapter home to a Fortress Monastery. Although slightly slower and less manouverable than standard Battle Barges of other chapters, those of the Vanguard boast reinforced hull plating on the entire length of each ship, with additional plating added to the prow. More powerful lances replace the standard batteries of other chapters' barges, and dozens of extra dorsal and lateral torpedo tubes line the behemoths. The Gorgon, the largest of the trio, is Master Mikael's flagship, while the Iron Medusa and the Asirnoth act as its escorts. The rest of the fleet is comprised of a pair of Avenger-class Grand Cruisers, eight Strike Cruisers, a mixed bag of a few dozen Hunter-class Destroyers, Firestorm-, Gladius-, and Sword-class Frigates, and a squadron of six Nova-class Frigates.

Organization

The organizational doctrine of the Ferrous Vanguard differs from that of the Codex Astartes in a number of ways. First, the 9th Company is the only Reserve Company in the Chapter. Once the Neophytes have been molded into a knife by Captain Tunszu and his sergeants, they are handed off to the 9th Company. Here, the knife is sharped as the now fully-fledged battle-brothers begin practicing their teachers' lessons on their own. Each battle they fight chips a little more of the mold away, revealing the blade underneath.

Next, the Chapter's Battle Companies are divided by combat role; 3rd and 4th squads are both Assault squads, 5th and 6th are Devastator squads, and 7th and 8th are Tactical squads. While the Scout company molds the blade and the 9th shapes it, it is the Battle Companies where that blade is tested. Each Brother is moved from the 9th Company into one of the two Tactical companies after completing two decades. After a decade there, the brothers are moved into the Devastator squads, and eventually the Assault squads. Nothing really differs among the Battle Companies, except their roles. Each is there to allow each Marine a more specialized training in each combat role, as well as to allow the senior staff to see which brothers excel in which areas.

Last, instead of the traditional single Veteran company, the Vanguards have two. The first is made up of those veteran brothers who have earned the rare honor of receiving a suit of Terminator Armor. The second is comprised of the rest of the Chapter's veterans, organized into highly mobile, extremely deadly 'Death Leaper' squads; Brother-Commander Maxxon's 'Immortals' are such a unit. To gain entry into the 2nd Company, a Battle-Brother must first be nominated by a squad sergeant and his squad. Once nominated, that Brother's battle record and his actions both on and off the battlefield come under close scrutiny. If a total of five of the Company's sergeants approves the candidate, the nomination is brought before Brother-Commander Maxxon, who makes the final decision. For a brother to make it into the 1st company from the 2nd, an incumbent veteran-brother must have died, leaving an open spot first. Then, as with an appointment to the 2nd, a sergeant must make a nomination, and the nominee must receive a total of five approvals. However, instead of simply requiring Commander Wein's approval, each nominee to the 1st must also gain approval from the senior command.

Combat Doctrine and Fleet Organization

<<Coming Soon: Paragraph to describe the Chapter’s fleet and combat organizations>>

*Death Leapers: These squads are so named because of their combat drop practices. Equipped with modified jump packs, the Veterans of 2nd Company will leap from their assault craft, plummeting to the ground. Just as they near the safety deck for their packs, the Astartes fire them full throttle. The increased power output from the engine modifications is enough, sometimes only barely, to halt their descent enough to land safely. This also allows the squads to literally drop in on their enemies with almost no warning. However, in order to achieve and maintain the increased power consumption for such descents, the brothers must keep the engines off until the last moment.
*Scions of Mars
*Swift as the Wind
*Uphold the Honor of the Empreror
*Special Equipment
-Modified Jump Pack (limited)
-Rare/Modified Weaponry (limited)

Hail Brother Mikael and welcome to the Bolter and Chainsword! Looking forwards to seeing this fleshed out over time, I see you have the structure all set up, now to just fill in the details to display your chapter's character. :) I imagine with the exotic armaments these guys have access to, your chapter relies on plasma and Melta tech primarily and partial to the odd Lascannon or three?

Interesting that they are of the Dark Founding (13th), as no records are said to exist of any of the Chapters made in that ofunding. Was that deliberate and will it be a major factor in the Praetorians' history and character?

You'll enjoy your time in the Liber here I'm certain. We're all quite insane. :)

Cambrius

Greetings, Brother Cambrius!

Indeed there is a special reason for choosing the 13th founding, and as I fill out the various sections, all shall be made clear. :) It won't so much be a part of their history (one of those 'yes and no' kind of situations), but their character was shaped in part by it.

As for weaponry, yes. Plasma- and melta-based weaponry is definitely widely used in the chapter, but I meant more exotic/powerful/rare versions of armor, weapons, etc (being able to use an Achilles-pattern Land Raider instead of just the standard variants, for example).

Anyways, more to come soon. I just have to coax the machine spirit of this malfunctioning personal archival unit to keep running. It has done its job well, but is on its last legs. It will soon be time to release the spirit within so that I may requisition a new one. ( :) )

Sounds good so far, not much to go on though. Couple of little niggles: the name, 'Ferrous' sounds a bit odd especially with the longer second name, have you considered something simpler like 'Iron Praetorians' or 'Steel Praetorians'?

Second point is this: while I get the Admech/techy thing, making one third of the Chapter Techmarines is possibly a bit much, suddenly your Armoury has 300+ (probably nearer 400) Techmarines but has lost a third of its regular fighting strength??? I get what you're trying to do but it might be better to simply say that the regular Marines of the Chapter are much more technically minded than most, and hint (i.e. 'some Imperial sources say' or something) that many of them are just as well trained in the secrets of the Admech as the Techmarines of other Chapters. That way, you're still getting what you want without massively changing the structure of the Chapter.

I had. I haven't completely nailed the name down, that will probably be the last thing I finalize, actually, hehe.

As for the Techmarine bit, I know right now it sounds like it wouldn't work, but I have some ideas and explanations that I have yet to fully flesh out. Fear not, as I nail down things they will be added. :)

Thanks for the critiques, brother!

Just a quick update for now, as I'm at my bud's house. Anyways, just added a color scheme for my Chaos Warband (one of the fragments of the Emperor's Children that has split off to form its own band of pirates) I have planned. They're going to be arch enemies, but I'll flesh out the fluff later.

Also, I know I'm no Dan Abnett, so I know my IA isn't all that amazing (yet, hehe). So please, let me know what y'all think.
