To choose to go first or not

In 5th Edition, I always chose to go second. This made one less turn of shooting, the ability to try and claim objectives last, and get strategic deep strikes after the enemy spread out.

 

Has this changed in 6th? Somewhat.

 

All the stuff listed for 5th still holds true. However, against a flyer heavy list, I would try and go first. Why? All flyers must be held in reserves. This gives our FMC a chance to create some havoc without another flyer on the board. Yeah, they still get shot at, but not as bad as something with skyfire. Plus, if you can wipe out the rest of their army then the flyers won't get a chance to come on the board.

 

I run a all tzeentch list with Flamers, Horrors, Screamers, and Fate/HoT. Then I add in Daemon Princes with left over points. If I get first turn, most my units can fire. And I like to take as many things with breath of chaos as i can. 1st turn burninate, 2nd turn continue to burninate and assault with screamers and princes. That hopefully kills most things.

 

Anyone else think going first isn't so bad anymore?

Na, 2nd turn is still better. Unless you have AA guns from fortifications or something, it's generally very advantageous for Flyers to go second. This allows them to shoot down the other Flyers on the table, leaving them free to rule the skies. I'd still happily take the 2nd turn as Daemons.
2nd turn is still better. Those flyers will come with a 3+ 2nd turn and i don't think you can wipe out an army in one turn (before most of the enemy reserves comes) even with tzeencth only it is nearly impossible let alone other type of daemon lists that have more assault elements.

But you would get two turns. Ist Player Turn first game turn. Then 1st Player Turn 2nd Game turn. You get to see the opponents list before the game still, right? For the Necron Flyer Spam list, wouldn't it be best to try and wipe out the army before the flyers arrive? That's what I'm trying to say.

 

I guess I'm more risky when it comes to daemons. I find myself attempting crazy things more so than my other armies. If it looks possible, I think would try it.

Given the end of game turn tabling 2nd is more important than ever going second means so long as your reserves come in you can avoid this fate. Add to that having your opponent lose a turn of shooting. The one exception is against lists including lots of warp quake.
I have been going first of late and it been benefincial. If going against Grey knight I say go 1st. The reason is the psy. power I believe it is called quake wouldn't affect you that turn. It also what fraction of Deamons you have on whether you can survive the in coming storm of shooting attacks. I guess what I am saying is you need to way the factors against your play style. Not much help but my 2 cents.
