undeadfilth
I'm thinking about purchasing a small force(between 1.5k and 2.5k) of grey knights and my idea is a force of footsoldiers packing as many psycannons as possible, no terminators, no vehicles. My question is, does this seem viable. I'm not interested in this being an "I win" kind of force, I just want an army that wouldn't be too expensive to run and would be fun to play with. thoughts? I don't want to invest in them if this style would not work. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259781-want-feedback/ Share on other sites
Vash
Well only going for psycannons isnt really the most stimulating way to play the GK really. But if thats what you want, of course it is possible. And psycannons are one of the best weapons out there for the GK, so it wont be hurting you in anyway. If you dont want terminators, and want to rack up as many psycannons as possible, I suggest that you go for purifiers. they can buy 4 psycannons in a 10 man unit. Combat squad them and let one unit be support and the other offense. Now you could go all the way with purifiers as troops, by adding Crowe as you HQ, but he isnt really the most optimal HQ around. But anyhow, 3 full units of purifiers with 4 psycannons, one or two hammers, plus psybolt adds up to 930 pts. So thats almost half of what you need (2.5 army). Then add some strike squads. Two is the minimum (unless you go for crowe and dont need them at all). And if you think you can do with the minimum amount of troops. Then go for Purgation for heavy support. they can have 4 psycannons in a 5 man unit. Adding two Ordo Malleus inquisitors with terminator armor, psycannon and psyker upgrade give you re-roll to hit and of course more psycannons. All this adds up to 2170 pts, and a total of 30 psycannons. There is still 330 pts to spend, those points could be used to buy an additional unit of strikes, or boost the number of models in the purgation squads. undeadfilth
Another question I was having is, if I do go this route with them, would I even want close combat weapons? They all come with power weapons right? Seems like they'd be able to hold their own in a combat just fine without any crazy CC options. Vash
Yes they come with power weapons, force weapons actually, from start. So you cant go much more close combat crazy than grey knights. Of course, a few hammer here and there wouldnt hurt to invest in, but they are crazy cheap with purifiers. Now doing a list that spams psycannons doesnt generate many friends, atleast where I play. People will generally think its boring and will eventually stop playing against your list. But thats how it is here where I am. undeadfilth
Well cool. I'm not making the list to really make friends or be competitive, I just want a fun force that I've never played. Also, the GK models are gorgeous(especially their standard Grey Knights boxed guys, though their termies are pretty sexy models as well) so I'm looking at them as a nice fun painting/converting side project. Just don't want to invest in them and find out that my concept will be severely underpowered in a casual setting. I think full force weapons will probably be fine enough for me. From playing alot with Necrons lately and having completely shifted gears with my BAs to foot soldier lists with no vehicles, I'm really liking that feel of combat. Vash
Well then, Grey Knights will please your mind once you get hang of how to play them. I have always played the Grey Knights with no vehicles, even in 5th ed when transports weren't made of paper. I would suggest: Ordo Malleus Inquisitor in terminator armor, psycannon, and psyker upgrade with Divination (usually end up with re-roll to hit power for him and a unit) Second HQ the same if you want to stay in the line of psycannon spam. These Inquisitors can be converted heavily. ELITE Purifiers all the way, meaning 3 units (since you dont want the terminators/paladins). 4 psycannons and psybolt ammunition for extra punch on your stormbolters. TROOPS Three units of strike squads with 2 psycannons, and psybolt ammunition HEAVY SUPPORT Three units of purgation squads with 4 psycannons. The few points left I would get some random wargear for the units. Such as hammers. undeadfilth
Do you recommend bring 10 man squads for the purifiers and purgations? I understand that the strike squads need to be 10 strong for the second psycannon to be available. I'm glad to hear that my concept isn't completely bunk:P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259781-want-feedback/#findComment-3161466 Share on other sites
Vash
To get 4 psycannon with your Purifiers, you need to have 10 men in the unit. The purgation doesnt need 10 men, they are like devastators. But it is never wrong to get extra bodies to soak up wounds. undeadfilth
You rock Vash. I really appreciate your help in this. I'm not sure if I'll be able to start working on this project yet with Dark Vengeance coming out this Saturday, but I'll see what I can do. I'll be sure to post work in progress pics as they come. Now to figure out if I want to go for a standard paint scheme or change it up a bit. I'm thinking red ink for highlight instead of an armor wash could look pretty slick. Hmmmm.
