Upcoming Tournament ( need help )

Hi Everybody!

 

Allthough i am experienced player ( been playing regularly, also on tournaments, for almost 15 years), getting older means i have less and less time for actuall playing of the game. Therefore i require some help from the younger and vigorous players, and i hope you can help me out. ( I dont even know if i post this in the right forum? sorry if i am wrong somehow)

 

First the story:

 

I am quite familiar with the codex, played about 100 or so games last edition, but this new edition, i have only managed to get just 4 or so games, therefore i am still learning. As we decided with my friend, that we will attend a tournament in October, i need some help with the list and also some general advice. I have constructed the list acording to what i currently have/really used to play. My style is just to have an overhelming numbers backed up by superior shooting and some ,,road blockers,, So far, this has been really working out for me. therefore lets move to:

 

2., Tournament proposition:

 

The battles are going to be played with regular rules ( allies allowed), Armies are limited to 2000pts, One force organization chart.

 

3., The list ( i write only the aditional equipment that have been selected )

 

( Primary detachment Wolves, allies RH+ angels )

wlfs:

1 rune priest (divination primary spell, jawws)

1 lone wlf (terminator armor (axe) )

1 lone wlf (terminator armor, storm shield, thunder hammer)

wlf guard (10, 5 of them listed at their respective squad)

5 basic with combi plasma, in drop pod

10 grey hunter, 2`plasma gun, wlf guard in terminator armor with combi plasma

10 grey hunter, 2`plasma gun, wlf guard in terminator armor with combi plasma

10 grey hunter, 2`plasma gun, wlf guard in terminator armor with combi plasma

6 long fangs, 5`missile launcher, wlf guard in terminator armor with cyclone launcher

6 long fangs, 5`missile launcher, wlf guard in terminator armor with cyclone launcher

6 long fangs, 5`missile launcher

 

RH+ angels

Librarian (2 divination, one will most probably be primary power)

6`death company,(5 bolters, one pistol with power axe)

baal predator with h.bolter sponsons

predator with h.bolter sponsons

total 2000 pts

 

4 conclusion:

 

Well, this list has 68 marines ( 5 terminators, and 2 lone wlfs in terminator arm, 6 det company) which i think is a really nice number, considering i still have two ,,tanks,, in there.

The list have been build with the thinking that the last time i attended the tournament, from 25 players, 18 have been marines, 4 orks, and some other miscelanious stuff.

therefore the list is really oriented in marine elimination ( plasmas, missiles) orks ( predators, frag miss, lots of boddies), the spells reflects that too. I know my G.hunters squad dont have any specialist equipment, but if i substract points from other parts of the list then they are suffering and the whole thing just falls apart. Usually when the enemy hit my lines they dont need it because with the sheer number of attacks thanks to counter attack and shooting, the enemy is quite decimated, or i want to lose the combat so i can shoot at them the next round.I dont fear the flyers that much, i know they will be a pain in the back area, but , 7 rerolable miss launchers can, and have prooven, that they can deal with them. I have succesfullt beaten a deamon army, and a draigo inquisition ( 2 W pallies dont like to roll a 1 on their miss.launch save)but i lack experience against other armies.

 

Therefore, I WOULD really like to hear opinion from other players, who have constructed similar lists or have been playing a lot in this edition, for a constructive critique of what/why to change.

If I'm not mistaken, you need to choose one "lore" of psychic powers, so it's eighter 2 powers from the SW codex, or 2 random powers from one of the "lores" in the rulebook.

 

also, the predators are the only vehicles in your list, so they'll be targetted and disposed of rather quickly. a 2k list usualy has enough long range firepower to kill 2 rhino chassis in the first turn. Their points might be better spent on some jump pack infantery, angels style for early disruption.

 

the lone wolves would, imo, benefit more from a chainfist - wolfclaw combo, over the stormshield and hammer/axe, making them much more versatile. a Lone wolf is usualy the unit to use as a roadblock. imo, it's better if that roadblock can reliably thin out the enemy ranks, and if they break through, wreck some havoc on the enemy's tanks and long range fire support

 

ofc, there is undoubtedly a reason why you field these units as they are presented here, these are just some reflections I have when reading the list.

Well, if it is like that, I would probably go with the divination lore as it complements my plans better.

 

This is actually true what you are stating regarding the chainfist, but because the plp i ussually play with reduced the number of vehicles they include and increased the number of princes, g.daemons and similar beasties, making the guy with the hammer a really usefull asset. But since i expect that the tournament will also include plp who will definitelly include a raider/rhino stuff, that chain fist would be apropriate choice.

 

Thank you, thats actually a really usefull idea. ( problem being that i just have a lonewolf with a hammer, but i can somehow deal with that)

 

yes thats my perception too, but in this version of the game its really easy to get a vehicle cover save, and they are really cheap armor 13 buckets, i think the curve that the enemy will need to dispose of them, would really just buy me more time to focus on shooting him, and its really usefull against some armies. ( and enemy dont pay that much atention on them because of the amount of weapons they have)

 

Have been even playing with the idea of not even deploying them on the field but leave them in reserves, as they are quite fast, and when comming on board, have a great reach considering they move/weapons reach. Also, for their price, i can really afford just 10 jumpers, with meltas and probably a sword, and i dont think that 10 jumpers complement that list that much more those 2 tanks ...

Allright, Belfast, thats what i thought ! i think i read it in the psychic powers section , but i was not sure., so the priest will go back to his ussual powers load ...

what he was meaning by that is - if you choose Codex Powers (Jaws, Hurricane etc.) you can ONLY have Codex Powers, whereas if you choose BRB Powers you can choose one Divination (as that's what you want the Primaris from) and one other from a different 'school' BUT it MUST be from the BRB psychic powers.

 

In short - you can mix and match BRB powers, but you CAN'T have codex AND BRB powers. I'ts one or the other, not both.

 

On the list - I'd suggest swapping the 2nd LWs TH for a Frost Axe (you get your +2 Str = Str 6) still AP2 and is a tad cheaper than TH iirc. - and then if you have the points I'd either add bits to the D Comp. guys (in the form of power weapons) or give the 1st LW a SS :(

 

Other than that it seems like a decent and stable list :)

thank you guys for clarifying the psychic powers issue...

 

now i am really puzzled what really to choose, shield, axe, hammer ... its puzzling, probably i will have to play a couple of games and really see it for myself....

 

But from what are you saying, if i am not doing anything wrong in the choice of units in the list, i am particulary happy that there is no hard criticism... That means that this list could survive the test in the field...
