What i like about this band:

* They're an actual Viking / Folk metal band from Iceland.

* The band member's names sound like they're straight out of the Vlka Fenryka - Björgvin Sigurðsson (vocals, guitar), Baldur Ragnarsson (guitar), Snæbjörn Ragnarsson (bass), Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson (guitar), Gunnar Ben (keyboard) and Jón Geir Jóhannsson (drums).

* The band's name translates to "Age of Swords" and more literally "lawlessness".

* Most of the song lyrics, written by the group's bassist entirely in Icelandic, are inspired by Norse mythology and Icelandic sagas.

So yeah, this is what i imagine playing when the Space Wolves charge into battle. :)

Curious why everyone likes metal for Wolves. Or anything 40k seems like, hah!

It's GW thing, deffo. I never really bothered with music until I started going to the local GW store when I was about 15. Then it was all rock and metal on the store stereo. Well, it still is! Anyway, that got me into rock, metal and a bit of ska/bubblegum punk. Great times!

My gaming group

I can remember way back when, painting a Space Wolf in-store*, and "I've Never Met a Girl Like You Before" (Edwyn Collins, iirc) came on. Really took me out of the moment ;)

*dreadfully. It was all light grey, and bright yellow. Eurgh.

Well its not a GW thing. I believe its the altitude of players and gamers (including the staff members) and their lifestyle that has made metal THE Hobby music. I mean could you imagine a guy listening to mainstream music talking about chainswords and carnage as if it were real? I don't want to offend anyone but let's face it a hobby dictates a certain way of life and mindset. You can't just have an army of space vikings and listen to J. Lo!!!!!!

Spot on, Cpt. Can't argue with that. But the GW instore music, and staff, definitely influenced my taste towards the rock/metal/punk side of the musical spectrum.

When you see the really old GW stuff, you can just tell it was all written up listening heavy metal!

Now I'm 31, and of course my musical tastes have changed. I'm more likely to have The Verve, Kasabian or The Vaccines on at home, or probably some Global Underground mixes.

Until we game.

Then it's all about RATM, Rammstein and other assorted loud shouty noises. And I wouldn't have it any other way!

RAWWWWWWK!

As some others have mentioned - there's some brilliant classical stuff as well - personal favourites are the 1812 Overture, Ride of the Valkyries and the Ring Cycle, they're all beautiful (that's right a said beautiful laddies haha) and just work for it (helps that the first two of those are about a 'war' scenario, with 1812 about the Crimean War (focusing partially on the Charge of The Light Brigade) and Ride of the Valkyries being self-explanatory.

For me as a BIG metalhead, I was kinda overjoyed when I walk into my local GW store and the staff members looked like my kinda people (one had stretched ears, another just had long hair and a fair few piercings...) and then Nirvana, Daft Punk, Rammstein and Maiden came on and I was like 'ooooh mecca here I be'

I would go classic rock for this one let's say some zeppelin and to get the right tune how's abouts the immigrant song doesn't get much more Viking than that!

This is straight from "Prospero" - pay attention to the words brothers...

and yes Heidevolk is the best for the Wolves

I would have to throw something from Immortal's "Sons of Northern Darkness",

YEEESSS, was going to suggest exactly the same thing, especially, the last track (beyond the north waves?)

manowar, and bolt thrower also fit the bill nicely :)

Iron monkey seems fitting for terminator assaults,

also, i hear that blood claws only listen to grindcore before battle, a heavy dose of napalm death gets them nicely warmed up i would think ;)

Lone Wolves would only listen to doom though, as they mull over fallen comrades and their short lived fate, some early my dying bride, or 'footprints' by warning.

Im sure I remember back when i was a kid, on games nights in the Leeds workshop, they had a mixtape with various songs on, and theyd give small boosts to units when 'their song' came on.

For instance they had the terminator theme tune and all termies got a slight boost, they also had some sort of troll song and one for orks too...
