Joe42914
Hey Everyone Right, just seen a video on youtube of a guy using magents on his models. Since I've been out for wargaming for nearly a decade I was wondering if anyone could tell me why? Is it so you can use interchangeable weapons etc? Thats the only reason I can see but thats just me. I'm probably just being a fool about it Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259836-magnets/ Share on other sites
Olis
Yup. Exactly that. Interchangeable weapons is the main reason but backpacks are often done, too, on models that have the option to (de-)equip jump packs. I think the most popular models that receive magnets are heavy weapons troopers, for obvious reasons, and perhaps independant characters, to keep their options open, weapon-wise, instead of making multiple iterations of the same model. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259836-magnets/#findComment-3161498 Share on other sites
Subtle Discord
And as an extension of magnets on troops, magnets on vehicles on are invaluable for the aforementioned weapon swapping, and also for mounts to swap out other Wargear like Hunter Killers or Havoc Launchers. If you're interested in giving them a try, you're looking for Neodymium or Rare Earth Magnets. Don't let their size fool you, even tiny 2mm and 3mm Rare Earth Magnets can secure a surprising amount. And for basic mounting they are simple to use - Drill hole, add touch of Super Glue, place magnet and press it flush. There are several online retailers (I order from K&J, but that's just one of many) who are happy to sell small lots for very reasonable prices. Suggestion: Splurge a little and get a nice selection, and a reasonable amount. Remember, you need 2 per mounting point, usually, and some will get ruined and/or lost. Once you start small, you'll start wishing you have some larger ones for larger connections. Trust me. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/259836-magnets/#findComment-3161543 Share on other sites
tvih
Magnets are great. Being able to switch weapons later on is a great thing. Codex updates, trying out new things, adjusting to fit your enemy... all made easy to deal with by using magnets. I'm only making my first army now, but I'm using magnets for my marines. I only have one vehicle, a Rhino, and it doesn't have magnets (except for detaching Hunter-Killer missile) as it can hold together even without them. But in the future, certainly. Personally I use 2x1mm magnets for normal marines (100 magnets $3.75 delivered from eBay) and 3x1mm magnets for terminators (100 magnets $2.07 delivered). Well worth the money and time. I just ordered a second batch of 2x1mm ones because otherwise I'll run out before being able to equip any optional weapon arms with them.
