Iron Warriors Siege Scouts

I've been posting about these mini's in the WIP forum for the last week or so but having got them finished today I thought I'd throw up some pictures of them in here:

I started out with a single mini (the 'champion') but after some really positive feedback from the Fraters in the WIP forum this project rapidly grew into a whole demi-squad of these specialists. All that's missing is the marking on the left shoulder of the 'champion'. I've left this for now as I thought a really cool way of tying this squad in with the rest of the army that I'm planning would be to use a either the number or symbol of the Word Bearers host that that these Iron Warriors are fighting for/with. Might not quite fit with fluff but I thought it might make for an interesting hook for some back story to the army...

"What is a Siege Scout?" You might ask, well the story I've come up with is this...

"...a throw back to the heady days of the Great Crusade as well as the days of darkness that followed, Siege Scouts were a utilised as a semi-disposable asset by the Iron Warriors Legion to determine the best avenues for attack once an enemy stronghold had been completely encircled. They were equipped with high resolution pict recorders to better allow the Legion's senior Captains and Commanders to assess the intelligence they gathered. This served a dual purpose in that if the Siege Scout was killed prior to returning to his own lines, the vidlogs would not be lost as the cessation of his heartbeats would trigger a secured micro-burst transmission of all the data within the pict recorder to a dedicated intel/assess cogitator, this function could also be triggered manually by mind impulse link if the Scout was incapacitated.

Accompanied by a cadre of veterans they were also often used to force breaches in an enemy's defences, a tactic still known as 'the Forlorn Hope'. Though there are no known contemporary accounts of the Iron Warriors continued use of Astartes in this fashion, it is rumoured in some circles that the Imperial Fists, arguably superior to the sons of Peturabo in siege-craft use similar units where circumstances call for them, however evidence for this is purely anecdotal..." Warriors of Antiquity vol III, Augustus Olia (sequestered) M37

As you might also notice for Traitor Astartes this demi-squad isn't very spiky. That's just down to my aesthetic tastes, I've nothing wrong with spikes per se, but in my opinion spikes not always a Traitor/Renegade make. Some mini's look cool with spiky bits, but I don't like the 'weld a wrought iron gate on that and it's Chaos' look that a lot of the current range of Citadel mini's have. I really like the look of the new Dark Vengeance Traitor Marines, they're almost Rogue Trader-esq in some ways and in my opinion they really reflect the visions of Chaos that have been portrayed in GW artwork better than any of the current miniatures do. It was seeing them that inspired me to start collecting Chaos Marines properly.

Anyway my own ramblings aside, comments and criticism are as always very welcome,

thanks

James

The squad looks great all finished up mate. Love the fluff you added. I totally agree with you on the spiky nature of the current Chaos models but it look as though GW has addressed that issue.

Im itching to get my Dark Vengeance boxes. I got an email yesterday saying they had been despatched.

Superb looking squad James! The fact that they are Chaos Marines is not too overt and gives the feel that they are just turning to Chaos - maybe at the start of the Heresy.

The fluff is really great too. You've taken peoples ideas and input and melded them together to create a great piece of background to the squad.

Now, the real question is - are you going to do a full squad? ^_^

Thanks for all the comments guys:

@ Biohazard: my copy of Dark Vengeance arrived today ;) it's a very impressive box. I can't wait to get the clippers and modelling knife on the go... As for the nature of the Chaos mini's I only hope that the theme that's been established in the DV mini's is continued in any new releases that Chaos get in the future.

@ Kierdale: thank you. The stripes were the most time consuming aspect of this project. I'm glad to have pulled it off well though, they just wouldn't be Iron Warriors without them :).

@ Lestat: you're right they aren't overtly corrupted just now, although to be honest I've never personally seen IW as being that corrupt in appearance (aside from those infected with the Obliterator Virus). I think I might try and incorporate this into my army's fluff though... As for taking people's ideas on board, that's one of the things I love most about the B&C. I don't think these mini's would be what they are if I hadn't posted them on here and had the feedback and support of the B&C fraters 'pushing me on' and to answer your question, no. Not yet. I do want to expand the Iron Warriors contingent of the army but I'm going to leave that until I've got the Dark Vengeance mini's done...

@ Isiah: Thanks. Black can be a really annoying colour to deal with when painting (I wouldn't like to tackle a Black Templars army) but I've evolved a fairly simplistic approach to it now. I tend to highlight it subtly and let light do the rest of the work for me. Possibly a cop out approach I know, but it seems to work and I've always thought if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's not to say I'm not open to exploring other ways of painting black and in fact I have done so in the past, but this technique works well enough for me just now if that makes sense :). The copper/gold colour has evolved over my last few projects where I've experimented with 'warming' my golds/bronzes/coppers/brasses using Ogryn Flesh glazes one they've been highlighted.

@ SMcaptainAurelius: thanks. I try to come up with fluffy reasons for a lot of the work I do as it's important to me that it fits in with the history of the 40/30k universe. I've no plans to make more of these vets just now but there will be more Iron Warrior goodness being added eventually I promise.

cheers

@ ravenguard2010: thank you :D

@ Chaeron: cheers mate, sometimes I actually do get stuff finished to a good standard :D. Not sure how you mean older models though... The majority of the parts there are from the Forge World mk v armour kit with a couple of Chaos components on the Champion.

thanks for all the comments guys:

@ jokaero weaponsmith: I kinda cheat with a lot of my black's just now, it's simply Chaos Black, highlighted with Adeptus Battlegrey then washed with Badab Black to tone the highlight down a little, natural light does the rest .

@ A Kvlt Ghost: I'm not sure whether you mean the painting or construction so I'll cover both;

I used superglue to glue small chunks of slate from the GW basing kit onto the bases, then a few patches of small chips of slate from the same kit before using superglue to add sand to complete the base. I've found that while pva glue can be used for many bases superglue provides a much more '3d' texture to the base, I don't really know why it just seems to work.

The painting is just as easy, the recipe is Undercoat Chaos Black > Basecoat Adeptus Battlegrey > Drybrush Khemri Brown > Drybrush Dheneb Stone. To offset the colours on the texture of the bases I painted the rims with Charadon Granite.

@ Alex Crute: the 'precursor' element of the title is very definite; after seeing the Forge World preview video for the Betrayal book I'm now planning on adding at least one squad of Iron Warriors Cataphractii Terminators to this army...

cheers

James

@ A Kvlt Ghost: no problem mate, hope the paint test went ok :).

@ Inquisitor Engel: Thanks, I was a little apprehensive of painting straight lines over a curved surface, and to be honest I think the hazard stripes on both the pauldrons and weapons were the single most time consuming element in painting this squad, if I remember rightly it was about 30 mins per bolter and roughly the same per pauldron too. I'm glad I did it though as I'm really happy with the identity that the marines have, both individually and as a unit. It was good practice for the other Iron Warriors I'm planning to paint in future too :D.

@ A D-B: not wishing to sound like a gushing fanboy too much but thank you sir, thank you very much :).

I applaud your dedication sir.

Was this because of the yellow over black or to get the straight lines? If the latter, I would like to introduce you to: https://www.tamiyausa.com/articles/feature....?article-id=222 Best. Things. Ever.
