IA: The Watchers

Ecritter

Okay here's the idea, this will not be a chapter rather something like the Deathwatch ... only they'll be responsible for catching and punishing rogue Inquisitors. Ordo Vilicus is will be one of the many Ordos Minoris.

Sound fun?

Hmmmm... I like it. Reminds me of an X-Wing.

Hmmmm... looks like they would come from a sandy, desert world, maybe like Tatooine. Perhaps a desert planet that is not too harsh, like Tallarn, but has a decent human population living off of moisture farming or raiding.

What I imagine based on this armor and now that I have linked it to Star Wars is that these marines recruit from a spaceport city in the desert world, like a Mos Eisley kinda place. They get the young street urchins who hang around outside of cantinas and bars and pickpocket or beg Rogue Traders and freighter pilots for any amount of credit or food, or to take them offworld with them. Most are ignored. Some of these children run in gangs in sandy alleyways, beaten by gang bosses, or PDF law enforcerments, spaceport security, or even each other. Those who survive fights or beatings, found bloodied in backalleys or near trash disposal cogitators, would be picked up by strange men in light brown and orange tunics. The men are likely cold and emotionless, some kids would go willingly, some would scream, thinking they are kidnapped. They would be dragged in front of PDF guards, and the PDF would just stare at them and continue on their way, as if it was perfectly normal.

Your chapter's monastery is that giant, ominous pyramid looking edifice in the middle of town. A big-arse orbital cannon points to the stars on the roof, and X-winged colored landspeeders (hah!) and Thunderhawks come and go, depositing supply or training squads operating out in the dunes, maybe even recruits from captured raider youths outside of town, to diversify the ranks. Serfs guard the entrance in tunics woven in chapter colors, but the marines are rarely seen on the streets, although sometimes, the moisture farmers and dusty commoners would look up at the building and spot the occasionally power-armored figure standing on the rooftop, brown canvas cloak blowing in the wind before he disappears down a flight of stairs back into his shadowy chapterhouse.

Name wise? I dunno. Sand Reavers? Dust Raiders?

Try a red chest piece and shoulders? That would look better I think.

The word that comes to mind for me is... pious. That's all I got, sorry.

EDIT Just to add, white and red makes me think of something like Knights Hospitaller. I think the desert theme is cool too.

Okay, so I have what I think is a nice color scheme but no real idea as to what it brings to mind .... in other words I'm at a loss for the chapter.

What does this color scheme say to you? Help a fellow Liberite out.

OK. If I get my imagination on, that scheme says to me:

* Older Chapter, long illustrious history. But low in numbers in more recent years, potentially dying out. Maybe after being in the vanguard of actions taken against the Tyranids, if you'd like a 'why'.

* Stoic, resolute warriors from an arid world, the Chapter symbolically uses water blessed by Chaplains/Librarians/Apothecaries in various cleansing rituals for every piece of equipment that won't malfunction if wet. :D

* Honourable, but not governed solely by honour.

Flexible in regards to what combat doctrines are used, maybe a slight leaning towards close combat.

Namewise, I dunno. :HQ:

Trying something different .... inspiration finally hit me. Doable or not?

Hmm. I'd advocate taking a slightly different route in regard to heraldry display - it's a little too deathwatch-y atm. Maybe have the individual marines keep their original heraldry on both shoulder pads? I dunno, just a punt. Maybe have something else. Like I said, it's a bit deathwatch-y for my liking. :D

Would be good to see more presence from the Ordos Minoris, but I too think that the chapter would be better recruiting as a normal chapter than doing the Deathwatch using marines from other chapters thing. Like the cream and orange :)

Out of the name ideas "The ... Hunt" struck me as a good template, sounds good and makes sense with what they do. Thinking of the power of the =][= rosette though, how do your chapter combat their prey just telling the governors of the local system that they are traitor Astartes? Are detachments of your chapter led by Inquisitors? Do your officers have Inquisitorial mandate themselves?

See that's the problem. The Inquisition can't control a SM Chapter, but has been allowed to use groups of SMs (the Deathwatch) to do their job. So they'd pretty much have to operate in much the same way as the Deathwatch (leadership, et al.) to get things done legally.

And using SMs from several chapters means they have to have a way to show their parent chapter. Any ideas?

You could always have an Inquisitor (or two) who's stuck two fingers up at the rules and attempted to control a chapter anyway... That way solid cream and orange is quite viable...

Why not GK? Well as its written it goes like this.

Ordos Malleus (The Threat Beyond) controls the GKs, tasked with Daemon hunting;

Ordos Hereticus (The Threat Within) controls the SoB, tasked with Heretic hunting; and

Ordo Xenos (The Threat Without) controls the DW, tasked with Xeno hunting.

It is rumored that at least one of the Ordos Minoris was tasked to purge the ranks of the Inquisition itself. That is the Ordo I'm working with (with the name I've given them).

If I go with a complete chapter dedicated to this, it'd look something like this.

With the chapter badge on the dark Inquisition shoulder pauldron. But I really doubt this would fly here on the Liber.

I like it, to both of the last posts. An Inquisitor may not be able to control a SM chapter, but if a chapter and an Inquisitorial Ordo decide to be best buds and always back each other up on missions I doubt that that would be strictly against the rules. And even if it was only vaguely within the rules I can't see many people quibbling. Why don't you think that this would fly?

What about The Invigilators? The Blazing Eyes? The Unblinking? The Eternal Watch?

I'm no artist but I knocked the below together in 5 mins in paint. Wotcha think? (hope the link works)

Woops, missed your chapter badge on the first read through  Never mind then

I believe the Sisters of Battle are a chamber militant of the Ordo Hereticus, even though they are nominally under the aegis of the Ecclesiarchy.

Correct

Not any more. check the WD codex

Um... I don't have it. Could you give us a run by of the salient points?

doesn't matter really, cannon says one of the many Ordos Minoris was charged with purging rogue Inquisitors ... so my Ordo Vilicus using the Watcher Chapter is the way I'll go. That way I can steal Volsung's howeworld idea too. :)

I'll start a new topic when I get things going.
