25th Anniversary Crimson Fist Space Marine

Pig Of Sparta

Recommended Posts

I dug this mini out last night for something to do today while I, like many fellow hobbyists across the globe awaited my copy of Dark Vengeance. I decided that since the postal services in my region are never the quickest I probably wouldn't get my copy of Dark Vengeance today so I challenged myself to paint as much of this model as I could by 4pm this afternoon. As it turns out my copy of Dark Vengeance did come today so I have been a little distracted but the pictures below show my progress:

Since it'll likely be a while before I've finished assembling my new Chaos army and gotten it ready to begin painting I think I'll continue to work on this to 'keep my eyes in'. The keen eyed folk out there may notice the minor conversion I made to the mini to bring it closer to the original Rogue Trader artwork that inspired the sculpt. Also I wouldn't normally start painting the base of a mini until I'd completed everything else however in this instance I decided to start along with the mini itself so I could correct any paint splashes without too much hassle.

although I've not made much progress, comments and criticism are welcome as always

cheers

James

Looks like you've been a busy boy there James! It really is a superb model - I would have loved for GW to gave done him with the original plasma pistol though.

I've got 2 of these to paint up - along with everything other project..............

@ Lestat: you're right, it's one of the finest Space Marine sculpts that's appeared in a while. I actually didn't know anything about this mini until the week after it sold out from GW Direct. I made a series of panicked phone calls to family members who live near GW Stores and my sister was lucky enough to snag this one for me from a guy outside GW Northhampton for about 35 quid I think. It is a shame that Juan Diaz went for the 'modern' plasma pistol as I think that the one from the artwork would have been easy enough to do. I can only guess that it was down to WYSIWYG type requirements so that the mini could be used for gaming. I did consider trying to convert mine as the conversion looks easy enough to do with a couple of additional bits and some guitar string but with the price that these fellas go for on eBay I didn't fancy making a mess of it and then trying to replace the arm :D. Can't wait to see what you do with your two...

@ Colonel_ Logan: thanks mate. Little details like the back pack can make a good mini great in my opinion. As soon as I knew I had the model 'in the bag' as it were I was on eBay ordering the mk iv/v/vi back pack :D. Trying to figure out the blue and red was one of the reasons I've left this mini so long, but after a lot of mental painting exercises I thought I was close enough to give it a try. If you're interested the blue and red recipes so far are below (both are over a Chaos Black spray undercoat):

Blue:

Basecoat Necron Abyss

Wash Asurmen Blue

Thinned Wash Badab Black (about 50/50 paint/water)

Red:

Basecoat a mix of Mechrite Red and Chaos Black (about 70/30)

Thinned Wash of Baal Red (about 50/50 paint/water)

I think I've worked out the red highlights as being pure Mechrite Red followed by a Mechrite Red/Kommando Khaki mix. The blue I'm still working on but will probably be a similar kind of thing :). Apologies for 'old' colour combinations but I'm still using them as I've still got them :D.

cheers

James

It's a good job you found one - I know they sold out in my local GW within minutes. I was glad I'd preordered mine.

The blue and red recipe look simple and effective. Have you tried adding in Hawk Turquoise (or whatever the equivalent is now) into the Necron Abyss for the highlights? I use it on black for highlights and works quite well.

When I get around to it, I'll post some pics. I know ones going to end up yellow and probably leading a squad of vets.

thanks for the recipe, I might give one of mine a go soon using it!

I ended up with 3 due to reporting defects with them to GW mail order, one was so bad it had to be convverted and can be seen in my Scythes of the emperor thread, but that still gives me one excellent and one dubious quality cast to play with.

Good to see this chap being given justice PoS.

I was totally gutted not to get one - sold out direct before i got one and was too late into the Aberdeen store to get one there. I really can't justify the cost on eBay either :)

Thats how I ended up with 2. The first one had a couple of air bubbles which were easily repaired and the top of the banner - the Aquila/Fist symbol - had no detail whatsoever. GW replaced it with a complete new model - I was only looking for a replacement banner.

I don't usually use NMM as i don't painting banners very often and i only really use it on banners as i find that regular metallics look fine on most elements of my minis. That said it was really satisfying seeing the banner 'come to life' as i added each layer of colour to the details. I also worked out how I'm going to highlight the blue and crimson armour from painting the banner... ulthuan grey is the secret ingredient :i mixed it with mechrite red for the crimson and necron abyss for the blue so with that worked out work on the marine can progress a little faster now which is good as the beginnings of my new chaos army are starting to cry out for paint :)

@ the lucky people who got more than one of these minis: I'm quite jealous of you :) after I'd built my one i had a couple of ideas for conversions based on the mini but like Rider-75 i can't justify the extortionate eBay price to purchase a duplicate :)

@ Lestat : i found NMM a pain to begin with but found it got easier once i started using washes and glazes to shade and tie the layers of colour together. I also used a lot of pictures of reference on where to place the highlights as i found it wasn't always obvious where/how they should go. Don't know if that'll help you out but it'd be cool to see your work if you wanted to give it another go :).

Thanks

James

I might have to give it another go sometime. I'll see if I can find a guide somewhere and practice on a test mini first.

I might have to try Ulthuan grey as a highlight - might give a dustier look to the armour than using Hawk turquoise.

Bit more work done on the marine himself this afternoon, starting to pick out some more of the details and bring the crimson armour up too:

@ Darth Potato: thanks mate, I think this is probably the best banner I've ever painted although since I've only painted about 3 I think that's not really much of a statistic :D. Seriously though I'm really glad that it's come out this well. I've never tried NMM silver before and it's been about 2 years since I did NMM gold. The mixes for highlighting the red and blue were sort of made up on the spot too as I just went with what 'seemed right'. As for the more muted tone of the banner although I like my bright colours (mainly red) I wanted to try to reflect and emulate the more grimdark tone of the original artwork so I guess it must've worked .

@ Lestat: I used this tutorial originally in White Dwarf back when 5th Ed. Codex Space Marines was released. It's possibly outdated now that the 'new' paints are here but for how to build up the layers and place the highlights I think it still has some merits. As for Ulthuan Grey, it's fast becoming one of my favourite colours from the new range although I've not tried it with black, yet...

cheers

James

Looking good james. Are you going to do the lenses red or maybe go with green? I think a green would work as you already have the green of the Ork head as a spot colour.

That link just takes you to a blank page. I'll have a look on the GW website and see if I can find it.

Cool, maybe we'll see some NMM from you soon(ish) then?

I just realised you asked about the eye lenses of the marine before and I didn't answer your question, but to be honest I hadn't thought as far ahead as them yet. Now that you mention green though I think I will go with that as there is a lot of red on the mini already. I've been using a greeny/blue on eye lenses for the last few marines I've painted so I'll probably use that but pulled closer to green to contrast the blue of the armour on the 'Fist.

cheers

To be honest, It'll be some time before I get around to trying NMM again - got far too many Romans to paint at the moment (with more Auxilaries on the way).

Maybe after Games Day, I'll give it a go - depending on what I buy there. Mind you, the GD model might lend itself well to NMM, but might need to practice before then.

The new Caliban Green might be a good base for the lenses. It's quite dark, but should lend itself to being built up nicely with highlights.

Quite a bit of progress since the last update:

The banner's just about there now, just need to do the parchment and the laurel wreath and highlight the banner pole itself. As for the marine well there's still quite a lot to do there but he's getting there. I'm undecided as to whether to highlight the blue armour before doing the remaining detail work or to go the other way and finish up the detail first...

@ Lestat: good luck with your Roman Legion, perhaps once we get a forum going for the IBoH again we could see some pictures? As for the green I've been using: Stegadon Scale Green > Kabalite Green > Sybarite Green > Ulthuan Grey > Guilliman Blue for my green eye lenses although I might switch the blue glaze at the end for a green one to 'green' the tone of the lenses a bit more. Thanks for the tip though, I'll take any I can get on the new paint range as I'm starting to run low on some of the old colours now :(.

cheers

Now that is a real nice blue! Very smooth - could maybe use a little highlighting just on the very edge of parts (top of greave, edge of pauldron, under eye lenses) just to give that final finish.

Are you going to tone down the brass at all? It might just be the lighting in the pic, but it seems very bright and draws your eye away from the focal point (face) down to his belt.

Once the IBoH forum is back up and running, I'd be more than happy to post some pics of my Romans. I've just finished 2 Gladiators (a Myrmillo and Hoplomachus) and a model of Caesar who looks remakably like Kenneth Williams..........

In fact, heres a link to the Gladiators http://www.warlordgames.com/forum/viewtopi...f=12&t=6102

Really liking this guy. The use of red armour panels beyond the fists has led me to put some on my latest Crimson Fist marines. Only sergeants and above though.

Looking forward to more updates, can I suggest a yellower tone when doing eye lenses? I've found it works really well.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's been a bit of a busy week but I've managed to get a little more done on this mini, I think the finish line is now firmly in sight with just a few little bits and pieces left to go now:

@ ZAChos: I'll think about the yellow tone, thanks for the idea :P.

@ SCC: Thanks mate, I'm really happy with how the banner's come up from the initial colours going on. I'm also really pleased with the blue and red in general too, my mental painting exercises paid off I think :cuss.

cheers
