So I've been playing with a couple of different types of lighting and this one came up trumps.

Quite happy with how these look, though you can really see the discrepancies in the painting!

@puplord: the drybrushing technique was as you said meant to speed up progress and make it so I can get an army on the board quickly. And it has succeeded but it's time to start spending time on the character models I think. I've taken your suggestion of using two light sources as you can see above and it' worked quite well! Thanks!

@Cate: We've all been there! I find the sling mud until it sticks approach works well!

@Beef: Yeah I read this blog when it was still going properly, and found this article. I'll have to have a proper read of it and see if I can't crowbar some of it into my scheme.

All in all, happy with the photos. Time to do some serious painting!

Me and the Missus have been having a play with her 16mp camera.

This is what we came up with!

This one had the flash on, and it's near as damn it, the actual colours of the model.

If you are like me, higher definition photos bums you out because you can see all the touch up work that needs to be done. But what a great tool as well to learn from. Your doing fine and if you continue with that same amount of gusto to improve, you will be painting pro in no time.

Here is a photo from a tutorial I am working on, Photo is to illustrate how a background can easily be added to improve your photo's appeal. The full tutorial should be out by end of Jan. -Vrox.

Thanks Vrox!

Just thought I'd post up the WIP for the next few months!

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg482/greysquigg/DSC_1037_zpsb118c446.jpg

Top Left: Long Fangs (probably with ML and heavy bolters)

Top: Wolf Guard (yes i know the LFPL is in there but he makes a cool terran veteran).

Top Right: The start of a scout pack

Middle: A whole 15 blood claws! Thought using these older models for them would make a nice differentiation between them and the grey hunters.

Middle Right: Logan Grimnar my first bit of failcaste.

Front: The Grey Hunters I'm entering into winters advance.

Got allot to be getting on with! hopefully i'll be able to put some of the tips to the test with these guys!

Looking good squiggy!

Like the photo third from bottom best. You have the right amount of light on the left side on the GH crowding the rhino and the rest is crisp too.

Two questions.

What are you using as snow? This is not a critique, I still haven't seen anyone managing to make snow looking like the real thing, it usually look like salt or whipped cream, I have tried a couple of ways to make snow, but haven't liked the result. (I have lived 15 years in the most northern parts of Sweden and I am fully aware how snow should look like as we had snow 13 months every year. Yes I hate snow with a passion.) I also have the firm belief that snow is never ever "snow white" when an army threads on it, even if they are used to it. :)

Next time you have the time could you set up the models as they are supposed to be on the gaming board, HQ's by them self, elites etc. etc., and their respective dedicated transports?

One mini that I notice on all the pictures is the Mohawk GH with the braid, holding a bolter, The skin colour is really good on him.

Keep up the good work,

/C

Thanks Cate!

Glad you like them!

I'm using GW snow, two layers of it (when I get the time). It's actually not bad for a tabletop quality bass.

You are right about it being mushed up however, but I'm going for a more cartoony style so the contrast works well in my opinion.

North Sweden? damn you must know your stuff on snow then ;). I live in southern England, where we might get something that resembles snow..

Yeah I'm happy with my skin tones now. I've gone for a more slightly rosed by ale look with a touch of tan, because they are on snow they should have a tan.

Here is a work in progress of my logan finecast grimnar.

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg482/greysquigg/DSCN1704_zpsfe4f24a5.jpg

Please ignore the car hair on his shoulder... he's clearly not a dog lover.

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg482/greysquigg/DSCN1700_zpsd71ce8d7.jpg

Go on.. Laugh.. It looks more like Mr Fox doing a disco dance.

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg482/greysquigg/DSCN1703_zps8d35bcf7.jpg

Anyway, my first forays into layering seems to have ended up looking more like a sneeze.. This will need some practise I think.

Hi All.

Spent a while "sexing up" my Contemptor and Logan Grimnar Models.

Here are some before and afters.

Before:

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg482/greysquigg/4bca6e4e.jpg

After:

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg482/greysquigg/DSCN1814_zps532f71c8.jpg

So I've addressed the "chalky" consistency of the hull of the dread. I've basically been spending some time learning to highlight and layer properly and here is one of the fruits of my labour.

Logan Before:

After:

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg482/greysquigg/DSCN1808_zpsee7ac4aa.jpg

Same deal, as the contemptor here

I'm really quite proud of these two models which are the two figure-head models for the whole army.

Thanks for everyone's help so far.
