Modeling chooser of the slain

Greetings B&C,

I know the traditional way of modeling a chooser would be to find some kind of raven or other bird to represent it. I'm confused as to what the meaning of 'the model must be smaller than the rune priest" infers...does it mean the base has to be smaller? Or does it have to be shorter than him? Or even the physical model itself must consist of less plastic or metal mass than the priest? All of the above?

My main reason for asking is that I'm tossing the idea around of using an extra fenrisian wolf model model and painting it as a spirit wolf, basically as a spiritual familiar. I feel like this could go along with the fluff well enough along with being different from the norm. In short I basically want to know it this would be legal to use or if anyone would give me grief for doing so. Thank you in advance!

I had a similar idea ever since I played a druid in 4e d&d (and naturally my spirit animal was a wolf)

Here's what I've been considering for my vacation at the end of the month (after I get back from OBX). I'm going to create a mold out of one of my fen wolves, and then experiment with clear silicone and clear resin. I've been checking out different products for casting and for the final material, but I haven't found the perfect combo yet.

Edit: This thread did get me thinking about this again. I think my first try is going to be with RTV rubber for the casting and Silicon for the model with a slight bit of Space Wolves Blue for tinting for a lighter blue color and my fen grey for a darker color so I can test out two different versions.

@ Nrthstar: That sounds pretty cool actually. I figure im just going to paint mine in light blue, but I would be interested in seeing how that turns out. Post pics if you do!

@Wispy: That's a good looking one with the 1kson marine under it. I like it

Will do, I found the right combo of materials, I just hope I can find them in smaller sizes. 50 bucks is a little steep when you consider that's 50 bucks towards drop pods I need.

I personally use a Reaper "Familiars" raven model for mine, but I seriously think the ghostly wolf idea is epic. I don't think an opponent is gonna complain, as they are technically not even there. Meaning that they won't block line of sight, as far as the game is concerned and can't attack. The Rule of Cool trumps all!

@Wispy... Very well done. Love that base!

@Nrthstar... Let me know how that works out as I think that's a killer idea!

Oh I was just gonna say what northstar said.

If you could cast the wolf model in a mold and pour in clear, translucent resin, then either tint that with blue ink or drybrush the clear resin with a lil electric blue, you'll have a sick-looking ghostly wolf model I think.

Thank you all for being helpful! This was my first thread after being a stalker for the last couple years... :D I really like the community here and look forward to posting army pics and getting more involved.

On another note I will certainly be going ahead with the ghost wolf chooser! And Nrthstar you should definitely get your idea started and post pics!

I need to make friends with someone who can make a good mold since I suck at it. Can work quite well with resin but suck at mold making.....LOL

"Smaller" is not defined, so you'll just have to go with what you think is fair and right. Just dont go wild, and you'll be okay.

I have also gone for the humble Servo Skull (from the Devastator boxed set), after going for several years with my "Gretchin of the Slain," whereby I used the Gretchin with Telescope model that comes as a Big Gunz crew-member.

Valerian

The "Chooser of the Slain" in Norse mythology was in fact another name for the Valkyries - spirit warrior women who would swoop down and take the worthy souls of those slain in battle to Valhalla... I always wanted a naked warrior women or a naked warrior painted ghostly blue to represent the CotS.

That's what I'll be doing, sans the naked part. I've got some DE wych parts and some VC coven handmaiden parts that I'll be mashing together with a bit of viking flair GS-style to have a more futuristic valkyrie... though I'll have her more corporeal than spiritual, by putting her in a stasis field.
