ASOIAF SPOILERS - I will put as much as needed under spoiler tags

I've recently come back to the hobby and I've chosen to start playing space wolves, the first army i was interested in for 40k. The other day, I had a major epiphany. This epiphany was to combine two of my favorite things - 40k and A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of thrones), specifically house stark. Because of this, I'm really looking for some input on fun conversions and "counts as" I can eventually do . For those of you that are unfamiliar with ASOIAF or game of thrones, house Stark believes in honor, leading through example, not asking of others what you are unwilling to do, not taking crap, and upholding the old gods. Also, their sigil is a grey direwolf on a white background. This translates very easily to a SW force going with the pre-heresy paint scheme and using the Ragnar Blackmane's great company decals for the shoulder pads.

The plan at the moment is to get a basic force up and going which I have about 3/4 assembled which consists of 4 packs of grey hunters, 2 packs long fangs, 5 man scout pack, and TDAWG's. I've not started any heavy conversions because I'm extremely rusty after a near four year hiatus from the hobby and my initial efforts will be fluff based paint schemes and wargear. Here are my ideas for my themed force

Blood claws - Pre-heresy conversion Blood claws - Easy to do and very very effective. I will probably end up buying a lot of chaos warriors bits/boxes to do this force right. These will represent the basic soldiers of the north or I may paint the furs black and consider them the "nights watch"

Fenrisian wolves - I'm definitely going to do a fenrisian wolves pack to represent

Nymeria's Wolf pack

. This will not need a lot of conversion but will be a very fluffy force to field

Now for the fun stuff!

Bran and Hodor - I really want to do a Chooser of the slain coversion with

bran riding hodor due to his "accident"

. Hodor can be easily represented by either a WFB or 40k Ogre/Ogryn but choosing the right one for the conversion will take a bit of research. Since bran is a boy, finding the right model for him is rough and I really have no idea how to represent him, especially with getting a model to look like it's

riding a rather large man

Jon Snow and Ghost - I have two options for him. For younger Jon and Ghost, I could easily just make a wolf guard BL and do an alibno fen wolf. For older Jon Snow and Ghost, the plan is to convert either Canis Wolfborn or just a Wolf lord riding a TWC. For the TWC representation, I really want to represent Jon as being the

Lord Commander of the Nights watch

and thusly will have his armor or fur painted

black

. The hard part about this representation will be how to paint Albino white fur and still have it look visually interesting as well as detailed. My initial thought is to paint all the fur white after basing it, then washing the wolf with a very diluted Nuln Oil wash to shade the fur and then painting the top of the fur white again. If you have experience doing something similar, I'm all ears!

Rickon Stark and shaggydog - If any character in the series screams mark of the wulfen, it's Rickon Stark. The hard part with this is finding a model that looks like a wild child. I would definitely do this as a counts as Lone Wolf in PA with MotW and a fen wolf. I may or may not give him 2 plasma pistols to even further represent his wild nature ;)

Ned Stark - For the first iteration I want to do of this, I'm planning on a slight conversion of Logan Grimnar from wielding an axe to wielding a big sword and just paint accordingly. the model looks fairly appropriate for Ned Stark. Later on down the road though, I'm want to do either a representation of what he does in his first scene in the series -

decapitating a deserted Nights watch member

.

Rune Priest - I really want to do Maester Luwin as a Rune priest. I think the Rune priest in PA model is appropriate, but I would need to green stuff his maesters chains and probably chop off his pony tail. And empire Warrior Priest would be a good option as well for a counts as Luwin. Another Option for a rune priest would be a counts as Sansa Bretonnian Damsel on foot

Things I would like to do or could but don't have good ideas for:

Robb Stark and Grey wind - Seems like it would just pretty bland overall. although, If I could figure out how to convert it effectively, Sigvald the Magnificent would be a pretty good starting point... Would just need to Dirty him up effectively

The nights Watch - I have a few robed DA bodies available and would be an easy starting point to represent the nights watch. The question is How to play them? DA allies, SM allies, alternate paint scheme/model for grey knights? There's a ton of options and I don't know if any would really be worth doing.

Arya Stark - Could easily represent a

calidus assassin due to her time with the faceless men

but I would only be able to play that if I decided to run Grey Knights as allies.

Long term things that would be fun to do:

Opposing forces - The way I see it, there would be 3 good directions to go for as opposing forces -

1) Enemy Houses - a Dark elves force Painted red and gold would be a pretty fitting counts as for House Lannister. I mean, something about the DE just scream incest and lust for power to me :D

2) Danarys Targaryan - It Would be a counts as IG force with either Chaos Marines or demons. It would use a lot of tallarn/ attilan style models and I would definitely use some

chaos dragons

to count as various demons. Or I could even skip the Chaos part and Use

dragon models

to count as various IG flyers.

3) The others - There are two ways to do this. The first would be a Necron force probably painted metallic white and/or blue. This would most greatly represent the physical nature of the others and I could do some fun zombie conversions should the mood strike me. The second option would be a Demons force to represent the others (I would go tzeench) with some thousand sons to be the white walkers.

Anyways, if you have any input on how to do some of this stuff or have any recommendations for models to use in conversions, I'm all ears!

I wonder what's worse, a Fenrisian Winter or the Stark Winter?...

I would recommend Lone Wolf for Jon. With one white Fenrisian Wolf pet. That should really set him apart.

I'm personally a big fan of Sean Bean being caste as Eddard, so I would probably give his count-as marine or lord one of the Boromir heads from the LOTR range or something similar, if the LOTR model prove too small. Probably would have to look at Reaper's range, since they have a huge variety of fantasy figs.

yes winter is coming and never forget about your northern banner-men such as the umbers.

Oh, I can't believe I forgot that! I had actually thought about GreatJon Umber (one of my favorite characters). My thought for him was to make him a Wolf Guard with an "actual scale" conversion. Just need to do an appropriate "hand" conversion and should be done with a fitting head.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I tend to magnetize most of my variable characters (lords, WG, GH special weapon people). Whats nice about doing this is I can do the representative character but be able to switch up and do multiple arms and shoulder pads to represent them in different roles. So I should be able to do him as a WG, LW, WGBL, Lord, ETC. I do like your idea for JonSnow though.

This endeavor is going to be a huge task in terms of my ability as I stated earlier so I don't know how long it will take me to get to some of the more difficult stuff

Also, thanks for the recommendation for reaper. I've checked out their site and they seem to have a lot of good options for me. Again, this is my first army in about 4 years so i've forgotten a ton of resources. Although, I found my old bit store guy from ebay and he's probably been jumping for joy for my return...

I love this idea! I am actually planning an ASOIAF based 40k campaign for my local group, with altered Planetary Empires rules I believe (again, still planning). Guess where I put the Space Wolf player. :P I will be watching this, as this interests me also. And I think the Dark Angels would better suite as Lannisters. 1# LION El'Johnson was a blond 2# There main base is called The ROCK. 3# Hmmmmm, who do the Wolves already have a rivalry with? :cuss It just makes sense to me.

Agreed. I was contemplating naming my new DV models after GoT characters, actually. Also thinking about painting the cultists to look like white walkers.

Od.

Night's watch scouts?

Good idea. The question would be how to do them... The sniper scout models could work but their arms are in a weird place if you want to use melee weapons. I guess green stuff cloaks on reg scouts or maybe imp guard?

Edit: Actually Catachans would work pretty darn well with the right amount green stuff. Would just need different heads

you could use the close combat scouts and make green stuff cloaks and stuff. to change them up also you can use bits from the warhammer fantasy empire or Bretonnias line to make them look more like some thing of that world.

Would look at the Hobbit range for representing the kids, maybe sam and frodo in orc armour with some greenskin wolf pelts and a head swap http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/...Id=prod1500438a

plus just take Boromir's head for Eddard Stark

I can't wait to see more on this post and when the figure start come to be

Well, I hope to oblige you quickly, but time is not usually something I have to spare. First thing I will be working on is getting some practice in with my paint scheme with a few packs of grey hunter's / long fangs seeing as this is my first army in about 4 years. Gotta work the rust out first, then the fun begins :HQ:

Oh yea I know what you mean. I got to get painting myself on my wg. Then Ill get to the fun just like you said lol

another idea for your "nights watch" could be using all black armor and giving them "deathwatch" shoulder pads since the nightswatch are drawn from throughout the 7 kingdoms and are either volunteers, or criminals on the run you could paint the whole unit as black shields with no chapter heraldry.... Just an Idea.
