Which scheme do you think is better, 1 or 2?

Sons of Thunder

Origins

Another victim of the Cursed Founding, the Sons of Thunder has been hounded by circumstances that have, at times, almost put the entire chapter to the torch. An unfortunate encounter with the Ecclesiarchy and Inquisition on a planet infested with chaos cultists led to a misunderstanding that has vilified them in the eyes of the Church, and endeared them to the Inquisition. Neither position is one the Sons of Thunder look upon with much pleasure. One Inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus has even been seen with the chapter on numerous occasions and even been seen giving orders. Why he is there, or why the Sons of Thunder tolerate him are unknown to all outside parties.

Homeworld

The Sons of Thunder had a planet set aside for their use, but before the creation of their chapter was complete it was destroyed by an Ork Waaaagh! Without a suitable replacement planet, what few ships could be brought together was used to create a crusade fleet. At present, their fleet is based in Segmentum Pacificus attempting to boost their numbers. They will, however, respond to any incident that they are able.

Combat Doctrine

Due to an unfortunate incident early in their history involving a close quarters assault on a defected Imperial world, approximately one third of the chapter was killed or wounded. This caused a dramatic shift in tactics to focus primarily on ranged combat with the assault units being utilized in hit and run type tactics with more mobile firepower. One battle forever cemented this way of thinking when the Chapter Master was at the mercy of an Ork Warboss, until a well-placed round from the first squad based marksman marine separated the Ork’s head from its shoulders, saving the Chapter Master. Despite this, they do give veterans advanced melee combat training to be able to deal with the situation should it arise. Despite the change the Sons of Thunder remain aggressive on the field, always advancing and only giving ground if it provides a better kill zone. The main objective of any campaign is to sever the head of the enemy forces to sow confusion and break the chain of command.

The Beginning, by Chapter Master Logan Hawk pg. 123
It was unbelievable, a travesty. I did not agree with the church but still sent my men to aid them on that cursed planet. And what were we met with; contempt, distrust, and outright disrespect! Even after we drove the heretics from the planet and saved their lives the Sororitas, and the Inquisition as I would later learn, still chose exterminatus! They chose to kill a planet because they did not wish to do their jobs of cleansing the people and planet of taint. Not only did they kill a planet, they killed my men still left on the planet. As if the damage suffered at the hands of heretics wasn't enough! That is why I am orchestrating changes within the chapter, to fix the stagnation that was put in place by an over glorified supply officer. After the changes are made, we will seek to expose the farce the Ecclesiarchy has paraded as truth. And may the Emperor have mercy on those that try to impede us.

Organization

While originally a codex adherent chapter, due to losses sustained in the early years of the chapter, only six companies exist at present. Also, the chapter has undergone an extensive reorganization since their early losses. When questioned as to why by a curious Ultramarine captain, it is said the Chapter Master stated the inadequacy, and inflexibility of codex for not only the reorganization but the losses sustained as well. This comment led to blows exchanged between chapters and a strained, if not hostile, relationship to this day. It was also around this time that the Sons of Thunder began painting their left arms white with black trim, as if in mourning.

Beliefs

The beliefs of the Sons of Thunder have gotten them cross looks from the church on more than one occasion, and even some from fellow astartes. They believe that the Emperor is not only a man, but flawed as well. While they recognize what a great and brilliant man he was, and an exemplary model of what humanity should strive for, they do not deceive themselves by believing he was a mystic being. They in fact hold him up because of his flaws and what he was able to accomplish despite them. It is unknown where or how these beliefs were first ingrained in the chapter, but there are many who see it as a dark sign. The one thing that gains them more ire than most of their other beliefs is that the Imperium has left the path the Emperor had set down for them and are open about this fact. They have even taken violent action against worlds they deem to have strayed from the path of enlightenment. Some of the more zealous chapters, such as the Black Templars, must be avoided lest there be a violent confrontation.

Geneseed

When asked the Sons of Thunder claim to descend from the Ultramarines, and while their purity and pride match, they show little of the traits possessed by other successors. Close investigations made by those curious, and well-connected, enough can find that is not the case. While no records can be found regarding the actual geneseed used, the records that do exist show attempts to “fix” something. It has been suggested that their mental state is somehow effected during the creation process, which accounts for their unusual demeanor. It has also been put forward by a bold Inquisitor that the geneseed is somehow responsible for a rage that matches even the Blood Angels Death Company when the Sons of Thunder are confronted by traitor legions, though there is little to prove it is more than just a hatred for the traitors.

Battle Cry

Demons run when good men go to war. It is used by the Chaplains as they steel their battle brothers for the coming conflict.

I don't know if I'm qualified to say how crazy the Sons' beliefs are, but with my personal context on SM so far, they are one of the few if not only organizations to recognize the Emperor as a Man instead of a god(though not all do) and so I don't think the idea of believing in a flawed Emperor is too far fetched. There's a marked difference, however between teaching that the Emperor is mankind's exemplar, despite flaws, and teaching that the Emperor is flawed, but is mankind's exemplar. Does that make sense? That should be elaborated when you expand their beliefs.

As far as gene-seed, I don't know about others, but I go there almost exclusively to find out what are the flaws!?, defects? What I gathered from your gene-seed section was that they claim to descend from Ultramarines and appear to have the purity to back it up, but secretly don't. So we don't get to know about their potential mutations yet :) . An important question though, is who is the credible source behind this intel, and why haven't they come forward with it? I imagine a chapter would be punished for claiming to be a successor that they aren't, but who knows. Main reason I bring up gene-seed though is that they are 21st founding. Reading that in the opening lines already set my imagination wondering what would afflict the Sons of Thunder. So far we know they aren't popular with some non-Astartes. Looking forward to seeing more.

These are seem to be your most fleshed out details, so they're the c&ced ones. Hope to see the rest grow soon.

I get what you are saying about the beliefs, and they believe he is to be honored because he is flawed. To achieve what he did as a man, albeit an almost god-like one, is worth the respect of all men past, present, and future.

I'm still trying to work out exactly what I want to do flaw wise. Most of it was/ is going to be their unorthodox beliefs, and maybe one or two innocuous defects.

On the ones digging through their geneseed, I was thinking one of the Inquisitors that they have run across and he is holding the information over their heads as a kind of insurance of the chapters cooperation.

Instead of saying that your chapter is defined entirely by opposition, like how much disdain they have for imaginary organizations, imaginary leaders, and imaginary religions, maybe I will just run with it.

Horus was doomed to corruption because he was the perfect man. He was the most successful, the wiliest, most charismatic, best loved; he got the most points. That is what chaos is all about, personal glory in the mortal existence.

There was nothing more to Horus than mortal success. The Emperor grew from martyrdom and ended in martyrdom. The shamans and the Emperor gave themselves for the life everlasting, while the succcess of Horus came only in objective mortal terms. It is Horus who is was "just a man," and could not transcend death.

Your chapter's secret is that they are Luna Wolves, and are oblivious to the immortal power faith and duty. They also developed the same combat doctrine.

I was wondering when someone was going to get the similarities, and not so subtle clues, and add two and two together. I like the idea that the Luna Wolves have successors that know their history but stay loyal to mankind. They understand where they came from and are proud of it, but they mourn what happened to their predecessors and primarch. I know there is a big stink over using traitor geneseed, but that's why they were founded when they were. There was an attempted fix, and the chapter isn't doing great. No claiming to be better than they are or being best buddies with anyone for them. They are trying to survive internal enemies as well as external ones, and even their own beliefs and they are failing.

Really though, that's just a lot of justification so I can make a loyal Luna Wolves chapter, haha.

Sons of Thunder

Luna Wolves are or were pragmatic and professional soldiers. The Codex is a pragmatic and professional doctrine. They would not really resent it. However, they would not have any time for it either, because it is measured and not sufficiently muscular. They are pretty cocksure; Torgaddon, Abaddon et al would tell the Ultramarines the codex is nice for you and very interesting, and then do whatever they felt like. Horus does not grouse on internet forums.

Instead of saying people "came to blows" when it is not really in context of how the captains met or what happened and is only bagging on the Ultramarines, write something about the Sons of Thunder, preferably something patronizing to the codex.

Like In preference to equivocating codex formations, the Sons of Thunder deploy almost entirely as tactical-style infantry squads. These squeeze the enemy in escalating firefights that end with a decapitating strike by the captains' oversized squad of veterans in personal combat.

If you are going to be hanging out with UM officers, it had might as well be because the Sons actually work very frequently with codex chapters like the White Consuls. The Consuls or Sons of Medusa et al think it is a great working relationship and are happy with all the intercollegial cooperation, and the Sons of Thunder think they are a bunch of nerds who are good for cleaning up after the real fighting.

While they may share geneseed with the Luna Wolves they are still fundamentally different. There was an attempt to "fix" the geneseed so there are minor deviations in their mental state so they are not the same as their pre-heresy brothers. While they remain pragmatic, they are still having to deal with their history and through a twisted telling have come to resent some of the other chapters.

Their reasons for claiming to be Ultramarine successors is not only because they share similar purity, but also as a sort of jab at them. They also don't work closely with other codex chapters due to their unpopular beliefs and complete disregard for the codex. They are more likely to deal with chapters that have deviations of their own, such as the Black Dragons. And the meeting with the Ultramarine captain was, (as I will expand upon later), very out of the ordinary and only due to close proximity on a battlefield. Also, it was less bagging on the Ultras and more of me showing my chapter can be quick to antagonize other chapters (or at least that was what I was trying to do).

As this is a work in progress, I still have a lot of work I want to do with these guys. This is still a very rough draft and I appreciate your input, and I hope to be able to work on it to clean it up.
